Sun Shade Lotion

Summer Sun Shade LotionThe ingredients of the Sun Shade Lotion are Distilled Water, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Stearic Acid, Veggie Emulsifier, Wheat Germ Oil, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter, Sodium Lactate, Cranberry Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Carrot Seed Oil, Liquid Silk, Optiphen.

All of Butterfly’s lotions are homemade natural lotions that are gentle enough for all skin types.  They are paraben-free and formaldehyde free.  They contain no petroleum products, no animal products, and no artificial fragrances or dyes.

Sun Shade Lotion is designed to provide light sun cover without chemicals.  It contains all-natural oils that inherently have an SPF factor ranging from 28–50 in red raspberry seed oil, 38–40 for carrot seed oil, 20 in wheat germ oil, 4–15 in avocado oil, and 2–4 for cocoa butter.  Mango butter and cranberry seed oil help to protect against UV rays.  These oils have been mixed with water and emulsifiers to make a lotion, so they are only part of the final product.  With any product used for sun protection, it is a good idea to reapply every 60–90 minutes.  For extra protection, you can apply more than one layer.

I am allergic to most commercial sunscreens and tend to break out in hives if I use them.  I love this Sun Shade lotion.  The only drawback for me is that I am not sure how well it works in water,  I apply it and then wear a hat and a shirt because I do not like sunburns.

Neutralizer for Sunburns

Neutralizer

Ingredients: Energized Stabilized Oxygenated Water, Ash of Dedecyl Solution, Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium.

This is an amazing product and I use it all the time.  I buy it by the gallon and use it for many many things.  It is the first thing I reach for whenever we have a rash of any kind.  It is amazing for hives.  With hives, I like to put the Neutralizer on and then soak the feet in clay as well as take things to support the kidneys.

I happen to have a fairly wild yard with many amazing herbs growing naturally including stinging nettle.  My kids have all learned what this amazing herb looks like and that Neutralizer is your best friend if you get too friendly with the stinging nettle.

I can’t imagine doing a sunburn without a Neutralizer.  I put the Neutralizer in an 8oz spray bottle and spray it on the sunburn.  If the person is quite sunburned it can seem quite cold.  It is ok to put the glass spray bottle in very warm water to warm it up some.  I also like to put a few drops of Lavender in my spray bottle.

Putting Neutralizer on cuts, and scrapes will help them to heal faster.  I like to mix in a bit of Deliverance so that I can disinfect at the same time.  There are many oils that would work for this and I have even been known to just use the Lavender one too.

This is what the company that manufactures it says about it.  NEUTRALIZER is an alkaline liquid that helps to neutralize stored acid wastes.  Add to your drinking water to help balance your body’s pH! It may give you more energy and may help balance your body’s pH levels for people with acid pH.  May also help cleanse impurities from your stomach and may help with stomach acid.  It is a mild sudsless soapy liquid that acts as an internal detergent! May help improve your well-being and the overall general appearance on the outside and inside.

Lavender Spray for Summer

Lavender Essential Oil

During the summer I always have Lavender handy.  I love to have it in a spray because I often want to use it on cuts, scrapes, and sunburns that my kids would rather I didn’t touch.

Lavender is a universal oil that has been shown to balance the body and work wherever there is a need.  It is called “the grandmother” of essential oils because it cares for and nurtures us through a variety of physical and emotional stresses.

All essential oils are antibacterial.  Some more than others but Lavender is powerful and gentle.  I often use it because of the emotional boost it gives as well.  It leaves us with no room for doubt that we are loved and will be supported in life’s challenges and in the process of healing.

If you don’t know what essential oil to reach for, try LavenderLavender can help us move from judgement to kindness and generosity.  Try Lavender for cuts, sunburns, burns, rashes, dermatitis, eczema, and insect bites this summer.

June Summer Blessed Waters

In June, we have three blends and three singles on sale.  These six oils are some of my very favorites for the excitements of summer.

LeBeGone is a great insect repellent and should be sprayed on pant legs, sleeves, and hats, being careful to avoid contact with the eyes.  A great way to do this is with a glass spray bottle mixing 30–40 drops in water.  Each of the single oils in this blend is among the best at repelling insects and was designed to help prevent insect and tick bites.  LeBeGone has an amazing aroma and is one of my favorite oils to wear, even when not out in the wild.  LeBeGone contains many oils used for depression, anger, and judgemental attitudes and creates a feeling of being loved and supported.  This is a great oil for gentle lymphatic drainage.  The oils in this blend support the movement of lymphatic waste products through the kidneys.

Insect bites can be dangerous as well as just annoying, but slathering yourself with chemicals may not be the best solution.  Essential oils make a viable alternative while providing other physical health benefits and emotional support.

I choose  LePurify because it is a great oil to use neatly on cuts and scrapes to disinfect.  LePurify kills odors, bacteria, molds, and fungi.  This is an excellent oil for cleaning any portion of your home.  This blend can be sprayed onto window sills and into corners during the winter months to prevent the growth of molds.  It is effective when applied to spider bites and insect stings and can be used for repelling bugs, insects, and mice.  LePurify sometimes brings relief from toothaches and dental abscesses; at the very least, it may relieve the problem somewhat until a dentist can be reached.

Some citrus oils and Lavender, all of which are in this essential oil blend, are useful for anorexia and eating disorders because they moderate feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.  I love that when we use essential oils for physical things like cuts and scrapes we also reap the emotional benefits.

Seasons Essential Oil

LeSeasons Essential Oil has a special affinity for the respiratory system.  This oil is amazing for clearing out the sinuses and opening the nasal passages.  Wonderful for relieving sinus headaches.  LeSeasons was created to deal with allergies, particularly seasonal allergies, but is also helpful when fighting a cold.  It has a light, airy, energizing aroma.  When worn, benefits not only the wearer but also those around them.

All essential oils impact emotions, and while  LeSeasons is primarily a physical blend, it will help bring clarity of thought, help improve attention span, help us analyze our resentments, and then help us let go of that which no longer serves us.  It is a stimulating blend and can bring a renewed sense of energy.

Citronella Java Essential Oil

Citronella is well known as a bug repellant, and while that is for good reason, it is so much more than just a bug repellant.  It can be used safely as an antiseptic to sanitize and deodorize surfaces being used in food preparation.  Citronella, diluted with a carrier oil, makes a refreshing massage therapy oil.  The Citronella oils are used for colds, flu, fatigue, headaches, migraines, and neuralgia.  They are also good for balancing excessive perspiration and excessive oiliness of skin and hair.

Citronella’s bright, fresh aroma is nourishing to the spirit.  It is also stimulating to the cardiovascular system.  Citronella increases the heart rate when it is abnormally low.  Citronella clears the soul of the negative influences others may be having on us.  It helps us look at our relationships, being able to evaluate whether they are a positive or a negative influence in our lives.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood was used traditionally by the Indian tribes of America to enhance spiritual communication.  Like all conifer oils, Cedarwood enhances feelings of security and protection.  It helps us to feel, and return, the love of heaven.  The aroma of Cedarwood calms anger and relieves nervous tension.  It quiets the mind that is going over and over the same details, analyzing and then analyzing again.  Steadiness, integrity, and emotional stability are some of the great gifts of Cedarwood Oil.  While I don’t only use this oil in the summer, it is one of my favorite oils to take in the mountains for meditation.

Because it is mucolytic (dissolves mucous), Cedarwood is useful for chest infections, asthma, and coughs.  It is also soothing and healing to the skin, and especially, to the scalp.  Cedarwood is often used for dandruff, hair loss, and psoriasis.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree oil is effective against some of the nastiest microbes on the planet.  Tea Tree can prevent sepsis in wounds.  Used to treat wounds, boils, sores, cuts, insect bites, and stings.  Tea Tree has been in use as an antiseptic for centuries.  It was used by soldiers and sailors in World War II in the treatment of tropical infections.  The aroma of Tea Tree can help us replace a victim mentality with a desire to understand why events and circumstances happened as they did.  Brings both tolerance and growth into our lives.

Tea Tree is also a mild tissue regenerator, making it a sensible choice for rashes, nail or skin fungal infections, wounds, cold sores, acne, athlete’s foot, ringworm, head lice, and candida.

June Summer Blessed Waters

Summer Blessed Waters

Summer Blessed Waters

These are what I call my summer Blessed Waters.  I tend to use most of them at some point and  I can’t imagine doing summer without them.  I have broken them up into a few categories.  Some of them fall into more than one category.  There is an incredible amount of information available and in order to keep this blog from becoming a book, I am simply going to make the name links to further information.
Burns and Scalds
Cuts and Wounds
Heat Exhaustion – Heat Stroke
Hives
Insect Bites and Stings

Burns and Scalds

CALENDULA OFFICINALIS: Used mostly as a topical in a gel form.  Very good that way.
CANTHARIS VESICATORIA: One of the best remedies for burns; helps the burn heal and lessens the amount of pain felt.
HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA: Not a common remedy for burns, but very useful if the burns are deep or have become inflamed (pre-infectious).
URTICA URENS: Useful for the minor burns and scalds of every day.  Really relieves the stinging and burning sensation.

Cuts and Wounds

CALENDULA OFFICINALIS: Externally, for minor cuts and wounds, along with a remedy that most closely matches the symptoms.
HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA: Use for open, painful wounds with weakness from blood loss.  Also relieves pain following surgery.
LEDUM PALUSTRE: Puncture wounds, such as to the sole of the foot or palm of the hands.  Hypericum is better for extremities, such as fingers and toes.  Ledum prevents infection.
STAPHYSAGRIA: Specific mental picture of humiliation or anger with a puncture or stab wound.

Heat Exhaustion – Heat Stroke

Heat exhaustion:

Loss of fluids and electrolytes can also produce a condition where there is nausea, dizziness, weakness, cramps, headache, and fainting.  In the instance of heat exhaustion, the person will be dehydrated.  Replacing bodily fluids and having the person lie down in a cool room helps with recovery.

Heat stroke:

When the body is unable to control its temperature after lengthy exposure to heat and the sun, sometimes a fatal condition known as heat stroke occurs.  An early sign is the lack of sweating.  The body temperature may rise to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and there will also be dehydration and a loss of electrolytes.  Seizures, severe headaches, confusion, and rapid breathing are also evident.  This is an emergency situation and generally calls for immediate medical attention.

ACONITUM NAPELLUS: Faint and dizzy with a headache after prolonged, direct exposure to the sun.  The individual will be anxious and restless.  May tell you they are dying.
BELLADONNA: Agonizing sudden shooting headache with intense throbbing.  Bright red face.  Dilated pupils.  Glassy-eyed, fixed stare with no expression.  Mouth dry but no sensation of thirst.
BRYONIA ALBA: Severe headache made worse by the slightest motion.  Extremely thirsty for large amounts of cold water.
CARBO VEGETABILIS: Collapse from excess heat.  Skin feels clammy.  Nausea.  Better for moving air around them (fanning).
GELSEMIUM SEMPERVIRENS: Sun stroke.  Headache in the back of the head.  Weakness.  Possibly comatose.  No thirst.
GLONOINUM: First remedy for sunstroke.  Severe congestive headache after exposure to sun and heat.  Hot face with cold extremities.  Irritability.  Confusion.  Pounding pain. (Compare to Belladonna)
LACHESIS MUTA: Headaches from heat and sun exposure.  Faintness.  Dizzyness.  Mental confusion.  Symptoms are worse after sleep.
NATRUM CARBONICUM: Chronically affected by heat and sunstroke.  Extreme fatigue, as a result of heat and exposure to the sun.  Headache is worse from the slightest mental effort

Hives

APIS MELLIFICA: Much burning and stinging.  Rosy red.  Very sensitive and sore.  Often with fever and sweating.  Worse at night.
URTICA URENS: Red, raised blotches with the constant desire to rub.  Rubbing sometimes brings some relief.  Always consider when the hives may have been a reaction to eating shellfish.

Insect Bites and Stings

APIS MELLIFICA: Burning and stinging.  The person is tearful and whiny.
ECHINACEA ANGUSTIFOLIA PUPUREA: Blood purifier, so speeds recovery and returns to normal.
HYPERICUM PERFORATUM: For exceptionally inflamed and painful bites to nerve-rich areas with the pains shooting or tearing up neural pathways.
LEDUM PALUSTRE: Ledum prevents sepsis and infection and should routinely be given when a person is bitten or stung.  It may be given, in low potency, along with the remedy that is most clearly indicated.
STAPHYSAGRIA: Indicated when the bite or sting stays sensitive to the touch for longer than the usual period of time.
URTICA URENS: Give internally.  Apply locally for the burning and itching

Woodland Path Camping OilLeWoodland Path is designed to allow us to take a journey down a woodland path, get a touch of nature, and reconnect with our wonderful Mother Earth.  Use it to relieve stress, center yourself, and begin anew as each spring the woods do.  LeWoodland Path is blended with oils that help the lymphatic system function better which benefits the whole body.

This blend is very nice diffused, applied to the back of the neck, wrists, or on your feet.  I like to diffuse this oil when camping or wear it when meditating.

Summer Featured Single

Sage Essential OilCamping is my time to relax and reset.  Sage has a great ability to help me do this.  It is a good oil for alleviating the effects of prolonged stress on the body and the mind.  Sage clears and sharpens the mind.  Cleanses the energy grid and strengthens its ability to protect us from negative influences.

Sage has a positive influence on intuition.  The impact on physical health from a strong nervous system and an active lymph system cannot be overemphasized.  Sage‘s ability to strengthen the pelvic chakras, and organs within it, gives vigor and strength to the vital centers of the body.

The Lakota Indians considered Sage as the “master healer,” as did the Romans.  It has been a popular ingredient in nerve tonics throughout the ages.

Featured Carrier Oils

Miracle SalveMiracle Salve contains 5 very amazing herbs: Comfrey, Lobelia, Mullein, Oregon Grape, and Plantain.  This salve was made specifically for treating burns and has been used on everything from mild sunburns to very severe burns.  I use Neutralizer for the first 24 hours or so of treating a sunburn but as soon I can put Miracle Salve on without causing too much pain I do.  It is best to spread it on with a knife pretty thick and then have them wear clothes that they can get ruined so the body can absorb as much as possible.

I like to add Lavender when using Miracle Salve to treat burns of any kind.  This salve was renamed Miracle Salve because of the many miracles we have seen using it.  Additional oils you may consider using with it are Yarrow, Helichrysum, Tea Tree, and/or Geranium.  If I were to only have one herbal salve in my home, it would be this one.

If I could only have one salve it would be this one and I would use it for everything.  I use it for every cut and scrape.

Summer Kits for June

Summer Sun Ready KitSun Ready Kit

This kit contains my three FAVORITE things for burns and sunburns.  Each of them is amazing by itself, but when they’re used together, the results are unbelievable.

LAVENDER is a must for any type of burn.  Combine by mixing a few drops with Miracle Salve or Neutralizer for even greater healing.  Lavender is mild enough to be used neat (straight).  A spray bottle is my favorite way to apply it to burns because there is no need to touch the burn.  You can also use Lavender on cuts or wounds of any kind.  Lavender is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, cytophylactic, and antispasmodic, making it effective for muscle strains and sprains, cramps, and wound healing.  The calming effects of Lavender are an emotional balm.

NEUTRALIZER is an alkalinized liquid that contains minerals such as Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium.  When added to your drinking water it may give you more energy and help balance your body’s pH levels.  One of my favorite ways to use it is to spray it on sunburns.  It immediately takes the sting away for a few seconds or minutes and provides the body with the things it needs to rebuild and repair.  It can be sprayed on the sunburn as often as needed.  I also have found relief from hives by spraying Neutralizer on them.

MIRACLE SALVE contains 5 very amazing herbs: Comfrey, Lobelia, Mullein, Oregon Grape, and Plantain.  This salve was made specifically for treating burns and has been used on everything from mild sunburns to very severe burns.  I like to add Lavender when using it to treat burns of any kind.  Miracle Salve is amazing for scrapes and cuts, or any situation where you would like to speed up healing and avoid scarring.
