BBL formula for aches, pains and sprains

BBL

This amazing formula is the perfect way to start a blog on aches, pains, and sprains.  I remember using this amazing formula many times in my childhood and it has been a staple around my home as well.

BBL contains Lobelia combined with Blue Vervain, Blue Cohosh, Black Cohosh, and Skullcap to produce an antispasmodic formula, nervine, and pain reliever. Antispasmodic means that BBL will provide relief from anything that manifests with spasms or pain with a pulsing quality. Examples might be coughing, muscle or abdominal cramping, or any kind of pain that pulses—such as toothache, earache, certain types of stomachache, pleurisy and boils.

Earaches (told by Valaree)

One of my favorite uses as a kid was for earaches.  I had horrible earaches as a kid and even ruptured an ear drum when I was about nine. BBL was the most amazing thing.  It took the pain away so fast and allowed me to swallow for the first time in some time.  My mother and I have learned many things about earaches that you can find in this earache blog.

My Finger (told by LaRee)

As I get older I am using BBL more and more as a liniment.  It is amazing for pain.  I particularly love it when the nerves are in play.   I smashed the index finger on my right hand thoroughly one day and the pain was excruciating.

First thing, I reached for Arnica—to stop the swelling!  Then I poured some BBL tincture into a small paper cup and put my finger in it. The pain became manageable very quickly and within a few hours, most of the discoloration, swelling, and pain were gone.

Ways to Use

A dropper full of BBL, taken at bedtime or added to the tub for a relaxing bath is one of my favorite ways to relax into a good night’s sleep. There is nothing narcotic, however, in the effects of BBL. There will be no stuporous type of feeling, just relaxation.

Take BBL internally and apply it topically as a liniment for muscle cramps.  The topical application does not require the giving of a stimulant. When using BBL for its relaxant properties,  you should not use stimulant herbs such as Cayenne, Ginger, or Peppermint.

A couple of dropperfuls of BBL in a tub of warm water relieves cramps, including really nasty menstrual ones. Taking it by mouth at the same time is also helpful. Used as a liniment on the abdomen, or on any muscle that is cramping, it brings almost instant relief.

Always consider a few drops of BBL for convulsion in children.  When working with children I usually use the BBL which is made with a glycerin base rather than alcohol. The alcohol formula is best for use in the tub, although you can use the glycerite. The glycerite leaves just a little bit of a sticky feeling on the skin after the bath. For convulsions—and the prevention of convulsions during a fever—I use a few drops of glycerin BBL by mouth and a bath in lukewarm water at the same time.

BBL is also excellent for the treatment of asthma—both as a way of dealing with an attack and as part of a long-term, overall program. Lobelia added to any respiratory formula, will facilitate the clearing of the passages.

To Make or Not to Make

When you are using BBL as a liniment you can go through quite a bit quickly.  Soaking fingers etc also uses quite a bit.  This is one that I like to keep at least a 4oz bottle of for emergencies.  You can save quite a bit by making your own but I know this can seem daunting at first.  If you are at all interested in making your own tinctures BBL is a great place to start.  You can buy the dry herb pack.  You can watch instructions for making herbal tinctures here.

Gingergrass Essential Oils

The main action of Gingergrass is on the circulation.  Encourages blood flow to any area of the body to which it is applied. Gingergrass, diluted and massaged in, is useful for headaches that originate in tense muscles in the neck or upper back.

The aroma of Gingergrass makes me want to smile and forget about petty annoyances.  Gingergrass lifts the spirits and reduces feelings of being stressed to the limits of endurance.  This oil is energizing in a mild and pleasant way.  Gingergrass is said to be an aphrodisiac.

Consider Gingergrass for colds and allergies to relieve sinus congestion and soothe the throat.

BHM Herbal Formula

BHM
(formerly Bone High Mineral)

If I had to pick a superstar for this blog it would be BHM.  BBL is a close second but BHM is one you want to get to know and use as much as possible.  It is such an amazing herbal combination that we did an entire blog on it.  If after reading what is here you want more please check out the BHM Blog.

BHM is the best all-around super-nutritious herbal combination. My family has been using this remedy or variations, for nearly all the years of my married life—and that is a lot of years! What do the initials ‘BHM‘ stand for? BHM was formerly known as Bone-High Mineral. This is a perfect description of some of the healing properties of this wonderful formula.

BHM is available as a tincture and in salve and lotion forms. BHM is also available as a dry herb pack to enable you to make your own tinctures as well as for ease in steeping up amazing cups of nutritious tea. Herbs, sometimes to a significant extent, pull more readily and with different properties in alcohol, glycerin, or water concoctions. Oh, how I love a warm cup of herbal tea on a cold morning or just before going to bed! Because  BHM contains bitter herbs many people do not enjoy it as a tea.

The super-nutritious BHM formula contains the same herbs found in the APL (formerly Anti Plague) herbal formula, minus the garlic.  APL is the strongest infection and ‘critter’ fighting formula that I ever come across in all my years as an herbalist! Why are the same herbs in both formulas? Nutrition and nutritive herbs play an important role in the treatment of bone and muscle issues. Since APL is so incredible, nutrition must be equally important when fighting illnesses and diseases.

BHM can also be used as a mineral supplement, especially for low calcium and magnesium. A little bit is helpful with teething babies and the healing of breaks, sprains, and burns. The addition of essential oils, especially for depression, can be very helpful.

There is another herbal combination BHM-Plus that has all these same herbs plus a few for drawing out infection.  It is an amazing salve.  It is also available as a dry herb pack for making your own salves for soaks or poultices.

Homeopathics for Aches, Pains, and SprainsFeatured Blessed Waters

We have picked 11 blessed waters for aches, pains, and sprains. These remedies are well worth your time to get to know. This is particularly true if you suffer from backaches, sore neck, or spinal and sciatic pain.  Arnica is a great one for everyday things that cause swelling and I would not be without it or any of theses in my first aid kit.

Arnica Montana (30C)

This is a favorite remedy of mine in every potency and is made into an oil (soaked), also.  We will talk about Arnica further in the carrier oil section of this blog.  Arnica—when not in homeopathic form—is not to be taken internally or used with a deep open wound.   Arnica can be a further irritant to tissues, especially mucous membranes.   Experience over many years, however, has shown me that this caution applies, as stated above to internal use and deep, open wounds and not to alight abrasions.

Try Arnica for the effects of any type of trauma.  It particularly shines for anything with swelling such as falls, injuries, contusions, bruises, and sprains. Amazingly effective where there has been bleeding into soft tissues. Use post-operative for pain and to promote rapid healing. Excellent remedy in labor and immediately postpartum.   This is one I have given all my children when they have their teeth pulled. It has been a great blessing for wisdom teeth.

(Headaches) A concussion, injury, and shock remedy. The headache pain of Arnica is a bruised feeling. The headache is worse for bending over, and the person will wince and draw away if you reach out to touch their head. With movement, the pain sometimes becomes sharp, almost stabbing. Remember to take Arnica whenever there has been a blow to the head, especially when there is an accompanying headache.

Backache #1 (6X)

Nutritional issues, either lack of proper eating habits or non-absorption of nutrients for one reason or another, underlie the need for this remedy. Pain will be, predominantly, in the mid-back and upwards into the neck. A keynote symptom of this combination is a headache if the person fails to eat regularly. Mental/emotional patterns include dissatisfaction with circumstances, restlessness, and a desire to travel or change jobs. Part of the emotional picture includes a lack of self-confidence, indecisiveness, and despair of ever feeling any better. As the emotional patterns as well as the physical pain worsens, severe anxiety—even panic attacks— may occur.

TUBERCULINUM BOVINUM (tuberculosis nosode) The symptom picture includes backache which includes tension in the nape of the neck and down the spine. There is a feeling of chilliness between the shoulders or up the back. The pain in the back may be accompanied by heart palpitations. Mental symptoms include dissatisfied and restless with a desire to travel, move about, or change jobs.
PSORINUM (scabies nosode) Severe backache with difficulty in straightening the back is a common symptom of this remedy, as is painful stiffness of the neck with swelling of glands at the nape. The backache is often accompanied by weakness and debility and has malnutrition or improper eating habits at the core of the cause. Walking or standing makes the pain associated with this remedy worse. There will be a marked despair of ever recovering from this pain.
LYCOPODIUM CLAVATUM (club moss) Back and bone pain which has an underlying causation in malnutrition from improper eating habits or weakness of the digestive system. Throbbing and pulsating best describe the pain alleviated by this remedy.  Pain is sometimes experienced in the neck as well as the back. There is a keynote symptom of headache that is worse if the person is not eating regularly.

Backache #2 (6X)

Food allergies are common in those who would likely benefit from this remedy. Of course, food allergies often result in a lack of certain vitamins and minerals in the diet.  They play are part in the pain experienced. Pain occurs, most often, in the lower back, and sacral area.  A other times, the hips become the focal point. May often come on suddenly and quite severely but loosen up with movement. Nausea, vomiting, and flatulence commonly accompany the pain. Symptoms brought on or worsened by hearing bad news, feeling overwhelmed by family or work responsibilities. Those who are considered hypersensitive, both physically and mentally, usually benefit from this remedy.

PHOSPHORUS (the element) The phosphorus picture includes a variety of back and sacral pain with none of them listed as keynotes of the remedy. Keynotes of Phosphorus are often mental and must be present for this remedy to be effective. These symptoms include sensitivities to lights, odors, noise, and the pain and suffering of others. The symptoms are often brought on by any type of bad news, by horror stories, thunderstorms, the dark, and just about everything else.  Consider this a remedy for very sensitive people.
CIMICIFUGA RACEMOSA (black cohosh) This is a polycrest remedy for women in labor, back pain during labor in childbirth, especially if the pain is in the sacral region, moving through the hips and down the thighs, and is accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
SEPIA SUCCUS (cuttlefish ink) This is predominantly a women’s remedy. A keynote is a lack of muscle tone. The lack of muscle tone in the abdominal area causes a backache in the lumbar (small of the back) region. This can be really nasty during labor. The back pains appear suddenly.  The back feels like it is being struck by a hammer.  The pain worsens by stooping or kneeling. After the initial few attacks, the pain settles into a dull throbbing and feeling of weakness in the lumbar area.
CALCAREA FLUORATA (calcium fluoride) The backache of Calcarea florata is chronic back pain, usually from a strain or other injury. The backache gets worse initially with any movement but improves with continued gentle motion and simple exercises.

Backache #3 (6X)

This is a remedy that focuses mostly on two areas, nerve damage and kidney issues. This means the pains, wherever they may be, are shooting, stinging, and come in spasms. Twitching and spasming of nearby muscles or spasms of the bladder may also be common occurrences. Depending on the individual the pain may be worse in the small of the back, in the coccyx and hips, or even higher up in the scapula. The mental patterns include mood swings—lows then highs, depression then exhilaration, and enthusiasm. The odd keynote of enthusiastic physical exercise brings on sudden fatigue and listlessness.

HYPERICUM PERFORATUM (St. John’s Wort) Hypericum is for damage and injury to nerves. The pain, no matter where in the body it is located, is usually a shooting nerve pain coming in spasms. This remedy is particularly useful for tailbone (coccyx) injuries.
UVA URSI (bearberry) Uva ursi is for backache due to bladder or kidney disorders. The backache will be better for lying on the back because this position relieves the pressure on the bladder. There may be shooting pain from hip to hip and the backache may be accompanied by headache.
ZIZIA AUREA (meadow parsnip) There is lower back pain with a dragging sensation in both hips. There is a tired feeling in the legs after the slightest exertion. The pain is made worse by movement and the back is sensitive to touch.

Hypericum Perforatum (30C)

This remedy is useful for backaches after surgeries in which spinal anesthesia was applied and also for old injuries where there is lingering nerve pain.

Excessive pain and nerve pain are the keynote indications for this remedy. Hypericum is specific to the treatment of injuries to nerve-rich parts of the body (fingers, toes, spine, coccyx, etc). The nerve pain of hypericum is tingling, burning, or simply numb. Hypericum injuries are distinguished by several unique traits. Two of these traits are that wounds are more tender than appearance would indicate they should be, and the pain from the wound is shooting or coming in spasms. Spasms of muscles after injury are a keynote of this remedy. Should be considered for all puncture wounds as a preventative for lockjaw. An excellent remedy for nerve pain after dental work.
METALS: A remedy for those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (depression due to lack of sunlight during the winter months); frequently used for general depression but is, of course, only effective if other keynote symptoms are also present; mistakes in writing and speaking—using wrong words such as left for right; irritable; inclined to speak sharply; brain fog; weak memory; facial neuralgia and toothache.

One of the main components in Hemp essential oil is myrcene, a chemical compound found in medical studies to carry antidepressant and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. The other main component of Hemp essential oil, beta-caryophyllene, helps reduce anxiety and depression as well.

Both myrcene and beta-caryophyllene have anti-inflammatory properties, making this oil beneficial for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn’s disease. Along with its anti-inflammatory effects, Hemp essential oil is said to have direct pain-killing properties and is used for controlling pain in nerves, joints, and muscles. Two carrier oils are very important and stand out in my mind for aches, pains, and strains.  They are each very unique and have very interesting properties in this area.  Let’s check them out.

Arnica Carrier Oil

Arnica is one of my favorite healing plants and should be in every first-aid kit!   Made by soaking arnica blossoms—fresh, whenever possible—in almond oil. Use Arnica Oil to experience amazing results for injuries where bruising, swelling, and/or inflammation are present. However, Arnica may cause swelling in exposed muscle tissue, so it is not used on open wounds or deep abrasions except in the homeopathic (blessed water) form.

Experience amazement as you try this oil on your next bump or bruise.

Goose Egg (story by Valaree)

I once had a kid walk right into a door while I was in a meeting and it raised the biggest goose egg I have ever seen.  Because I lived close, I immediately ran home and put arnica on it.  By the time we got back, it was all but gone.  One friend in particular was blown away.  She kept saying things like, “How did you do that?” and “I saw it, it was huge.” Arnica works best when applied quickly.  However,  I have had good results even several days later.

LN Carrier Oil

(Liniment infused oil)—contains the herbs comfrey, arnica, St.John’s Wort, lobelia, calendula, angelica root, valerian root, ginger root, and cayenne. These herbs, infused in almond oil, create a carrier oil that is amazing for injuries, bruising, inflammation, and the general pain and soreness that accompany injuries. The addition of lobelia in this infusion helps to deliver the other healing herbs to the area of concern quickly and relieves pain. The arnica works on sore, tight muscles and helps to reduce swelling of injured areas. Comfrey is probably best known for its healing ability for bones and tissues, but it is also very helpful for chest congestion. Cayenne works on the blood and is very effective at improving overall circulation. With increased circulation comes better oxygenation and healing. Using LN oil as a carrier oil topically for injuries would be especially effective when coupling it with essential oils.

Essential Oil kits for aches, pains, and sprains

April Kits3 Oil Kits

Essential oils are so wonderful and I pull mine out all the time for aches and pains.  I had a hard time picking my favorite ones for massaging tired and sore muscles.  These six are the ones I use the most.  I love that they bundled them together in these kits so you can save money.

LeDeeper contains penetrating, anti-inflammatory oils that aid in relieving pain that is deep in the tissues and nerves.
