November – Respiratory Health

Just a note, here at the beginning of this blog, to tell you how much we have appreciated the support of so many of you for Butterfly Express, LLC and its companion company, Butterfly Expressions, LLC. So many of you, both long-time and more recent customers, feel like friends or family!

Every purchase, every kind word, and every recommendation means the world to us. Your support has helped us enjoy the good times and weather some difficult days over the years. Your support has helped us grow and helped us be able to continue doing what we pictured in our minds all those years ago. From its tiny beginnings in my home’s kitchen as I tried to share with others the things our family was learning by study and experience (translate ‘experience’ to ‘illnesses’ and ‘accidents’, please), through hundreds of classes held here and, now, to all that happens here every day, your support and kindness has made it a joy to us!

I feel very blessed and very grateful. My heart is full this Thanksgiving season for all of you, and I wish you and your families the best of everything in the years to come!

Breezey RubLeBreezey Rub

The natural rubs carried by Butterfly Express, LLC are a combination of essential oils, herbs, and menthol crystals, among other ingredients such as distilled water and carrier oils as appropriate. The carrier oil used in the LeBreezey Rub is Mullein. Mullein, of course, has many benefits for the Respiratory System.

The LeBreezey essential oil blend that is basic to this rub opens bronchial and sinus passages very effectively. Besides being very effective in times of illness, LeBreezey is an excellent respiratory tonic and immune stimulant. It has viral-fighting and tissue-rebuilding properties, especially for the lung and bronchial tissues.

The LeBreezey Rub is very strong and has an icy-hot feel along with the very nice aroma of the essential oil blend LeBreezey. LeBreezey Rub works similarly to a vapor rub for the chest. The uses of the rub and the essential oil blend from which it is made include any respiratory ailment, including colds and respiratory flus, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma and allergies, and sinus congestion.

Aspire Essential Oil Blend

LeAspire is used to bring relief from colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, respiratory congestion, allergy symptoms, deep pneumonia, pleurisy, asthma, and flu that have settled in the lungs. LeBreezey is considered by some to be more effective for upper respiratory conditions, and LeAspire for use in deeper chest complaints affecting the bronchial passages and the lungs.

Although the oils in LeAspire are quite effective against infectious agents, LeDeliverance, which is strongly antiviral and antibacterial, is often applied simultaneously to aid in the fight against infection

LeAspire is an excellent expectorant, aiding the body in the discharge of phlegm and mucus. This blend also has antispasmodic properties which help to quiet dry, hacking coughs. LeAspire is especially effective when used in a humidifier to decongest and clear respiratory passages and to relieve coughs and sore throats.

Both LeBreezey and LeAspire have proven effective in eliminating snoring when diffused or applied, well diluted, to the face and chest areas. A small, almost personal story here. One of my sons, while serving a mission as a representative of the church I love, had a companion that snored—a lot and loudly. He would, after the Elder had fallen asleep, rub a couple of drops of LeAspire under his nose. It worked very well! When this companion was transferred to another area and companion, my son put a small bottle of LeAspire in his suit pocket with a note to explain to the new companion what it was for. The mission president passed the word to the new companion to ‘check the elder’s pocket’! Gratitude was later expressed to my son!

Surprisingly, and based on my personal experience, the synergy of the single oils in LeAspire gives it the unique ability to dissolve bone spurs if applied frequently and faithfully. A bone spur creates bruising in the tissues surrounding it, especially if the person is on their feet and pressure is being applied when walking or wearing shoes. It is recommended that a carrier oil containing Arnica be used when LeAspire is used for a bone spur. The Arnica will reduce the bruising and the pain that the bone spur is causing while LeAspire works to remove the spur. It is recommended that treatment with LeAspire be continued for a few weeks after the pain is gone. Bone spurs anywhere in the body react in much the same way!

Elemi Essential Oil

During the previous century, due to the combination of drought and war from time to time, Frankincense carterii (all Frankincense essential oils, really) became difficult to find and purchase. These oils also became prohibitively expensive. Elemi was often used in its place because of some similarities in practical uses and applications. Although Elemi has a very long history, both in the Middle East and in Europe, this time period helped it gain a reputation as a valuable essential oil in its own right in other parts of the world. Elemi is now known throughout the world as “poor man’s frankincense.” Elemi has more of a citrus aroma than does Frankincense, but Elemi has the distinctive spicy/peppery tone of Frankincense.

Frankincense and Elemi belong to the same family (Burseraceae), and they both contain sesquiterpenes. This makes all essential oils from this family supportive of the immune system! Sesquiterpenes cross the blood-brain barrier, which makes them effective for improving neurological health and clearing toxic residues from the brain!

Elemi has a rebuilding and strengthening effect on respiratory weakness. Elemi may be of use to people who suffer from chronic bronchitis. This essential oil, like Frankincense, is recommended for bronchial or sinus infections. Elemi’s expectorant qualities help break up mucus, clear chest congestion, and soothe irritated airways during cold and flu seasons.

Elemi is often diffused during meditation or energy work sessions to aid in visualizations. Elemi should be diffused in times of stress or mental exhaustion. Elemi lifts the spirits and provides the energy and desire to seek out better things and more uplifting experiences. The aroma of Elemi encourages compassion and a desire for going beyond the ordinary in serving others.

Exhale Essential Oil Blend

LeExhale is a combination of stimulating and soothing that is useful for relieving congestion, colds, or coughs. The Ravensara in this blend helps fight viral strains and, along with Tea Tree, aids in tissue rebuilding, while killing some of the nastiest microbes on the planet.

LeExhale is antibacterial, helps encourage lymphatic drainage, stimulates the immune system, and aids circulation. It has a high percentage of cineole because of the Eucalyptus Radiata in it, which is believed to be the component that relieves colds and congestion. This is my favorite respiratory blend for children because it is soothing and strong at the same time.

LeExhale is cool and soothing when we are feeling stuffed up and unable to allow our repressed or pent-up emotions to flow. Colds and congestion often occur when we are feeling “congestion” somewhere in our lives. LeExhale stimulates our mind to look for fresh new ideas and emotions that will serve us better, allowing the body to return to a state of wellness.

LeExhale, like LeBreezey, also comes in a rub at Butterfly Express, LLC.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Butterfly Express, LLC prides itself on being a ‘real’ essential oil company, as my husband likes to say it. As such, Butterfly Express, LLC carries six different Eucalyptus essential oils. Among them, they are incorporated into 15 different blends (at the moment).

Eucalyptus is a very versatile and useful essential oil. It can be used to cool the body in summer and protect from bacteria and viruses in the winter. Eucalyptus is useful for bronchitis, colds, flu, asthma, and any problem in the respiratory system. Eucalyptus is one of the best oils for bringing down a fever.

Eucalyptus is a strong analgesic and can be utilized with great effectiveness alone or as part of a blend for muscle aches, headaches, and general muscle/bone pain anywhere on the body. Eucalyptus alleviates mental exhaustion and stabilizes blood sugar levels in both hypoglycemia and diabetes. Well diluted, Eucalyptus is good for skin rashes and makes a very good energizing massage oil. Eucalyptus becomes more antiseptic with age, if it has been stored and handled properly.

Emotionally, Eucalyptus is energizing and promotes feelings of steadfastness and confidence in oneself. Eucalyptus helps us find our survivor spirit as we tap into our own inner strength and accept divine inspiration and assistance.

Cautions: I do not recommend taking essential oils internally, but I want to issue a particular warning about all varieties of Eucalyptus. They should not be taken internally. The literature around the world and in most schools of thought about essential oils agree that Eucalyptus is toxic when taken internally. Nevertheless, the FDA (what do they know about this kind of thing?) has approved it for use as a dietary supplement. They must have been working with a highly diluted form of Eucalyptus oil—and, even then, I question and strongly disagree with their assessment!

You can do most anything with the topical application of an essential oil that you would hope to do with internal consumption. Please be sensible and cautious about the internal use of any essential oil, especially with children, and do not take or administer Eucalyptus oils internally at all. Eucalyptus, of good quality and undiluted, can be caustic to the skin. Please, always dilute well, especially with children!

Stefanie Essential Oil Blend

The creation of this blend plays in my mind every time I reach for it or see its name in print! This blend was developed to help fight the antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas bacteria that was destroying the lungs of a young girl. It was brought to my attention by the herbal practitioner who was treating her at the time. He was in despair for her health and even, as he expressed it, for her life! He wondered if (hoped that) an essential oil blend might help—or at least make her more comfortable during the fight! I was quite new at the blending of essential oils at this time. I studied, I prayed—and then went to work! I never met the girl, but those who knew her well and were at her bedside assured me that this essential oil blend made a profound difference and helped he ‘turn the corner’ toward health and survival! I take very little (none at all) for the creation of this blend! But it certainly increased my testimony and understanding of the power of essential oils!

LeStefanie (named for this child) has a great affinity for the entire respiratory system. LeStefanie should be considered for any respiratory problem, such as asthma, bronchitis, chest colds, or flu.

The Melissa oil used in this blend is one of the strongest antiviral, antibacterial essential oils in the essential oil repertory. The high percentage of Melissa in this blend makes it uniquely effective for instilling a positive mental outlook on life and for improving one’s ability to enjoy life to the fullest.

This blend is anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, sedative, antidepressant, and mucolytic.

Marjoram Essential Oil

Marjoram essential oil is known for assisting with respiratory distress and combating infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. It is also considered beneficial for spasmodic dry coughs. The vapors, in the single oil or in one of the nine essential oil blends at Butterfly Express, LLC, help open up constricted airways and reduce swelling in the mucous membranes. Marjoram relaxes the smooth muscles in the bronchi, which helps calm persistent, dry coughing fits. Natural components in this essential oil provide mild antibacterial and antiviral support against a wide variety of common airborne germs

Marjoram is quieting to obsessive worry where negative thoughts circle repetitively in the brain hour after hour, especially at night when one should be sleeping!

Marjoram essential oil is also helpful for those who seem to love being in the center of some sort of drama all the time. If you have studied Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), you recognize that this need for attention is a manifestation of an energetically depleted Earth Meridian with its “lack of something” perception. The feelings of deprivation that Marjoram oil relieves best focus on family or friends, as a person feels certain that “no one cares” about us or tends to our needs as they should. The aroma of Marjoram oil can eliminate feelings of loneliness or persecution, replacing them with feelings of security and even some compassion for others.

In addition, the analgesic properties of Marjoram make it an appropriate choice for muscle aches, sprains, strains, and arthritis. Marjoram essential oil helps bruising to clear and fade more quickly. Marjoram increases the dilation of blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and eases heart palpitations. It can ease headaches that are caused by muscle tension or lack of circulation.

Featured Herbs for Respiratory Health

BRON (formerly Bronchitis)

BRON is a good remedy for bronchitis, as well as mild pulmonary and respiratory congestion. There are some very good anti-infectious herbs in this formula, but I always take it in conjunction with IF, RC, or BAC just to cover all aspects. (I hate slowing down by being sick!)

Dealing with Bronchitis before it becomes Pneumonia is a very, very good idea! Let’s talk about, or at least define, Pneumonia for just a minute. Pneumonia is a serious inflammatory infection of the lungs, especially affecting the microscopic air sacs (alveoli). Pneumonia is usually, but not always in this day of drugs, accompanied by fever and chills. (Fever kills ‘critters’ and is usually a sign of the body coping with the invaders!) Causes of pneumonia can be bacterial, viral, fungal, or even due to a protozoan. A couple of the bacterial varieties are really nasty and, because of the possibility of a viral component, it is strongly recommended to add essential oils to any regimen that you are following!

BRON should be used with PL (discussed below) if pleurisy is present. What is pleurisy? Pleurisy is discussed below under PL.

LCON (formerly Lung Congestion)

This is a very hot tincture, due to the amounts of Horseradish and Cayenne used in making it. If you are paying any kind of attention to health matters, you should be catching things early and avoiding getting this desperate! However, it certainly works very well if you do allow yourself to get sick with one of the strong strains of virus and bacteria that we are seeing lately—or if you ignore early symptoms for too long. I am glad to have something this effective in my repertoire! (And I don’t mind a little bit of heat in my tinctures.)

When a situation is this serious—or when dealing with my husband’s lungs, which were damaged during an explosion many years ago—I used the herbal pack and distilled water to make a couple of poultices to be used with heat. Please consider that, when using a poultice, the lungs are also accessed very well from the back as well as from the chest. Very effective! Even in the early days when pneumonia was a regular part of every winter season or cold fall wind!

In the early stage of respiratory and lung issues, PL (formerly Pleurisy/Lung), discussed next in this article, along with one of the infection fighters, would be milder but equally as effective and would ensure that you won’t have to deal with inflammation in the pleura at the same time.

Take 15-30 drops of tincture 3-4 times a day—more to tolerance, if necessary.

PL (formerly Pleurisy Lung)

Pleurisy is the inflammation of the membrane sac that surrounds and encloses the lungs. If you have ever suffered from pleurisy, you know how badly it hurts just to breathe. If you have ever had pleurisy, you also know that you never want to have it again! Been there, done that! There was a time when my husband opening the living room door to the outside world on a cold day could put me down with pleurisy—usually for several days at a time! As the herbal road I was walking cleansed my internal environment and got my lymph system flowing properly, the attacks got less and less frequent. I haven’t had pleurisy in years!

A knowledgeable nurse friend of mine once mistook an attack of pleurisy in herself for a heart attack, had an ambulance come for her, and remarked that she had not been properly sympathetic with patients she had known suffering from pleurisy. Pleurisy, as I have indicated, can be very painful! A little prevention, especially when it comes to pleurisy, is a very good idea!

While this is a very effective formula, it needs to be taken with an infection/viral fighter (such as IF or RC) and a formula to clear and drain the lungs (such as WC, discussed below).

Marshmallow

This is of course not those spongy confections found on campfire sticks! Rather, it is that pesky “weed” that crops up in gardens and lawns everywhere! This very beneficial herb has a long history in herbal traditions that date back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

The leaves or the roots act to relieve irritation in mucous membranes by coating, soothing, and hydrating irritated respiratory tissues. Warm marshmallow root tea is wonderful to help calm dry, ticklish coughs! The root is rich in polysaccharides, which form a protective, gel-like film over the mucous membranes of the throat and upper airways. Such shielding of raw or inflamed mucosal tissue minimizes local irritation, thus soothing dry, unproductive coughs and scratchy throats. The soothing barrier created by this healing plant gives inflamed airways and irritated mucosa time to regenerate and heal from environmental irritants, bronchitis, or mild infections.

Along with being an excellent herb for the respiratory tract, marshmallow is renowned as a heart tonic and has been and still is respected for its soothing and healing effects on the kidneys!

Why does Marshmallow—and every other herb used by those who know—work? Herbs are not magic. They work because they are nutritional powerhouses! On average, a cup of tea made from the fresh marshmallow root checks in with 247 mg of calcium, 12.7 mg of iron (that is very high), and 2,188 IU of vitamin A, for starters! A well-dried herbal product would be only slightly less nutritious. Used in tea or tincture form, the nutrients are readily absorbed and available almost immediately to the body.

Mullein Leaf and Flower (Verbascum thapsus)

A valuable ingredient in 19 of the products at Butterfly Express, LLC because of the many valuable healing capacities of this great herb!

What body systems does ingesting (or rubbing on) any form of Mullein reach and improve? Mullein is a true multi-purpose herb, with many properties that are useful for many systems in many ways. In reviewing my herbal notes, I found such references as “Mullein has a particular affinity for the respiratory organs,” and “Mullein is of particular use in pulmonary complaints,” and “Mullein is particularly useful to the urinary tract and the eliminative organs,” and “Mullein is particularly useful in calming and quieting inflamed and irritated nerves.” In other words, Mullein is useful in just about any circumstance and with any body system. Mullein is one of my favorite and most often reached-for herbs.

Mullein has the unique distinction of being both astringent (drying to tissues) when drying is needed, and demulcent (healing and soothing) when this is needed. I have added Mullein to a great many formulas, especially kidney/bladder ones and ones for the respiratory system, as a protective agent and to guarantee that accidental overuse of an herb (yes, that can happen with some herbs) will not result in further irritation. You can never go wrong if you choose Mullein! Some of the possible uses for Mullein include bronchitis, coughs, pneumonia, allergies, asthma, lymph congestion, kidneys, and earaches.

There must be some difference in the properties of the leaves and the flowers, but I have used them interchangeably for many years with good results. I prefer the flowers for making an infused oil and for use with earaches, and the leaves to add to poultices for mastitis or sore muscles. Picking those little flowers off the stem of the plants growing in my herbal garden is such a pain!

WC (formerly Wild Cherry Cough Syrup)

WC is an excellent cough and expectorant formula. It is more effective when given in frequent small doses—1/2 to 1 teaspoon, depending on the age of the patient- than in 2 or 3 larger doses. WC is a glycerite (made with glycerin and no trace of alcohol), making it appropriate for even small children in the dosages suggested. WC will liquefy mucus in the throat, lungs, and sinuses. This allows the body to either internalize it or expectorate it according to need.

Expectorate? It should be noted—and I have warned mothers for years—a young child should be placed on a washable blanket and not on a couch or living room chair—before giving a dose of this syrup. Sometimes—not always but often—this formula liquefies the thick mucus in the throat very rapidly, resulting in the child uncontrollably spitting (too calm a word—upchucking would be a better description) it all out!

WC is also very effective at quieting a dry, hacking cough where the throat is irritated but there is no mucus needing to be expelled. Most people become anxious for the next dose because WC relieves the heat and dryness associated with some sore throats.

WC is a cough syrup, not an anti-infectious formula, and should always be taken with the appropriate infection-fighting herbs.

CC (formerly Children’s Composition)

CC is an excellent first response remedy for flu symptoms, colds, and fevers. In this simple formula are herbs to promote a healing sweat, hold fever to just a hot enough degree to kill bacteria, effectively fight infectious agents, and calm and soothe the nerves.

CC is one of the finest examples of the synergy of combining herbs into formulas. The sum of the parts (only five ingredients in this very special formula), added together, is much greater than the individual parts alone; this is a simple definition of synergy. CC is perfectly balanced to be effective against bacterial, fungal, and even strep infections. It also acts to rid the body of the excess mucus that is being produced to protect the inflamed tissues.

This is one of the great ones—even for adults. Often CC is the only remedy needed. The herbs in this formula are particularly potent and pleasant when made using glycerin as the base. In fact, I see no reason to make it any other way! Vegetable glycerin has some properties of its own that mix well with these herbs, enhancing the medicinal properties of both the glycerin and the herbs. The glycerin tincture also tastes more pleasant than the alcohol version. It is pleasant enough that most children will take it without even the need to put it in water.

Featured Blessed Waters for Respiratory Health

Featured Blessed Waters for Respiratory HealthFeatured Blessed Waters for Respiratory Health

I know that I say this, almost always, in every blog or newsletter that mentions Blessed Water/Homeopathic combination remedies, BUT please remember that if a combination remedy works for you, it is probably because the symptom picture of only one—possibly two—remedies matches you very closely. Taking that remedy (or two remedies) in a higher potency would be more likely to effect a ‘cure’ rather than just make you feel better for a little while!

Respiratory #1

Ingredients: Filix mas (Male Fern), Natrum salicylicum (Sodium Salicylate)

Because this remedy has only two ingredients, it can be taken, in extreme situations, in a higher potency (if you know how and can move it to that potency). Strange as this may sound, I simply hold the remedy and request that it become—for this dosage—exactly what my body needs. (Blessed Waters are energy remedies after all!) Works for me every time!

This remedy, made up of only 2 Blessed Water remedies, is recognized as most useful for extreme lung issues with symptoms as extensive as those of such ailments as Cystic Fibrosis. Keynotes for use of this remedy include: great difficulty breathing with very noisy breathing. There will be hollow gasps for air, some degree of panting. The mouth will be extremely dry, and there will be great thirst!

Other symptoms include clogging of the lymph glands and thickening and clogging of mucosa throughout the body, not just in the lungs. Normally, mucus is watery. Mucus keeps the linings of certain organs moist and prevents them from drying out or getting infected. When mucus becomes sticky, it builds up and can block airways as well as tubes and ducts throughout the body.

Respiratory #2

Ingredients: Ligusticum porteri (Osha), Pulmonaria officianlis (Lungwort)

This remedy is potentized from two herbal remedies that are well-known for their beneficial effect on the lungs and respiratory system. Once again, as with Respiratory #1, because there are only two single remedies in this combination, the same instructions about potency as are found in paragraph three of the Respiratory #1 description above apply to this remedy as well.

Ligusticum porteri, known commonly in English, is Osha. Herbally, Osha is considered one of the best treatments for viral infections. It is also used for eliminating toxins through sweating. Sweating, of course, would be very helpful with serious respiratory infections.

Respiratory #3

Ingredients: Iodium purum (Iodine), Myrtus communis (Myrtle), Ranunculus sceleratus (Buttercup), Thiosinaminum (Mustard seed oil)

Iodium purum (Iodine) affects all glandular structures but is particularly useful for many acute catarrh of mucous membranes anywhere in the body. For respiratory issues, Iodium is recommended for a dry, irritated cough which becomes worse at night, suffocating coughs where it is difficult to get breath, and for pneumonia.

Myrtus communis has a powerful action on the upper part of —strangely—the left lung. (Actually, being specific to one side of the body is not unusual in Blessed Water/Homeopathic remedies.) Myrtus is indicated for dry hollow coughs, dryness in the throat, and coughs that include the coughing up of blood. A stitching pain, brought on by the lung congestion, will be felt running from the left breast area to the scapula.

Ranunculus sceleratus symptoms include anxious, oppressed breathing with a great desire to get a deep breath, gnawing pain in the left palm (this is the heart region in footzone and reflexology), and sore burning behind the sternum. The symptoms are worse with deep breathing and are triggered by anger. The symptoms are mostly right-sided.

Thiosinaminum has a dramatic action on the lymphatic glands. The only lung symptoms are accelerated respiration and lack of elasticity in tissues and organs, including the lungs. Thiosinaminum dissolves scar tissue and keloids and is said to work with tumors and enlarged glands.

Respiratory #4

Ingredients: Pine Bach Flower Remedy, Teplitz aqua (Teplitz Mineral Springs Water), Vespa Crabro (Wasp Venom)

Another fairly simple combination remedy as it has only three ingredients. However, do not be fooled into thinking this remedy will be ineffective, especially if the respiratory symptoms come with—or are driven by—emotional issues.

The first ingredient, Pine, is a Bach Flower Essence and was listed by Dr. Bach in the grouping of ‘For Those Who Suffer Despondency and Despair’. Pine is useful for states connected to guilt, regret,  self-reproach, and an inability to objectively acknowledge one’s faults. This remedy includes nervous breathing syndrome and insomnia. Gastric and duodenal ulcers and an irritable colon are also common.

The symptoms of Teplitz aqua include tearfulness, low spirits, irritability, and speech difficulties. The symptoms are worse at night and better by drinking cold water. The throat is a major source of trouble when this remedy is indicated! Soreness, burning pain, swollen tonsils with stitching pains extending toward the ears. Interestingly, this remedy is particularly indicated for gout.

The symptoms of Vespa crabro, as they relate to respiratory issues, include hurried respiration, hoarseness, loss of voice, stinging and burning pains, pale face with drops of sweat on the forehead, arms thrown out from the body in an attempt to gasp for more air, sleepless and restless all night, and nerve and muscular excitement and irritability. Cold water first relieves and then irritates.
This remedy was once very useful to me in recovering from an extreme allergic reaction to bee and wasp stings! Emphasis on very useful!

Respiratory #5

Ingredients: Ferrum iodatum (Iron Oxide), Equisetum hymale (Horsetail), Fumaria officinalis (Fumitory), Nasturtium aquaticum (Watercress), Natrum sulphuricum (Sodium Sulfate), Calcarea phosphoricum (Calcium Phosphate)

This remedy is most useful for respiratory distress that is accompanied by kidney ailments and/or early diabetes. Please note that three of these remedies have no listing of symptoms for lungs at all. The focus of these remedies is the kidneys, which, of course, have a large impact on lung issues!

Ferrum iodatum is best known for its use with chronic pneumonia and chronic bronchitis.

Equisetum hymale is a remedy to support the kidneys through the rigors of a respiratory illness. Emotionally, this remedy includes being very irritable and easily fatigued.

Fumaria officinalis also has its primary action on the kidneys. Symptoms include backache, bloating, flatulence, headache, confusion, and great difficulty concentrating. The mental/emotional symptoms of this remedy are quite pronounced and tend to alternate between lows and highs! One example: nervousness that is better with company and aversion to company. Negative thoughts and deep sadness predominate this remedy.

Nasturtium aquaticum, as an herbal remedy, watercress, is related to strictures in the urinary/bladder system.  Constipation of the bowels and liver issues are often the cause of the issues in the urinary tract. Once again, this is an emotional remedy. Hysteria and other neurotic conditions are often seen as the kidneys and lungs come under stress.

Natrum sulphuricum is one of the many—17 in my Materia Medica—that are created from one sort of sodium (salt, basically). The symptom picture of this remedy includes asthma that is worse in damp weather, pain in the lower left chest, cough with roughness in the throat, and eyes that are sensitive to sunlight. Once again, kidney distress plays a large role here. Of course, anything kidney-related likely indicates fear and anxiety at some level. With this remedy, the anxiety and fear often lead to depression.

Calcarea phosphoricum symptoms include rattling of mucus in the lungs, enlargement of the tonsils, and breathing that is more frequent than it should be and is short and difficult.  This is a frequently indicated remedy for children whose mothers were calcium- or phosphorus-deficient during pregnancy. (Phosphorus intake by a pregnant woman supports fetal bone mineralization and supports DNA and RNA structure in the developing baby. The midwife in me just materialized for a moment). A child for whom this remedy would be appropriate (necessary) loses breath on being lifted up or held over one’s shoulder. There may be almost suffocating attacks in babies following nursing, and the baby’s breathing will be made worse by crying.

Lung Meridian Balance

Ingredients: Apis mellifica (Honey Bee), Arsenicum album (White Oxide of Arsenic), Carbo vegetabilis (Vegetable Charcoal), Chamomilla vulgaris (German Chamomile), Kali bichromicum (Potassium bichromate), Phosphorus, Sulphur (Brimstone)

This remedy takes up an entire page in my book Butterfly Miracles with Homeopathic Remedies II. The individual remedies in this formula are definitely polychrest remedies (useful for most people at some time in their lives). I will try to condense, drastically, the description of each remedy here. However, it should be noted that if you are a live person with lung and respiratory issues, you will probably benefit from this remedy when lung issues are presenting!

Once again, emotions play a large part in the need for and benefit from this remedy! When out-of-balance, the need for this remedy is indicated by pride, intolerance of others and of their opinions, and a decidedly ‘know-it-all-already’ attitude.

Apis mellifica, while excellent for allergic reactions to bee and wasp stings, has very strong symptoms in the respiratory system! Lung symptoms include breathing with panting, edema and swelling of the larynx, feelings of suffocation, short, dry breathing—the person feels as if they may not be able to draw another breath. Apis is a slow-acting remedy; it should not be given up on or discontinued too soon.

Arsenicum album is a great polycrest remedy suitable to many people for many things. Lung symptoms include constricted air passages, hay fever, wheezing, asthma, and pulmonary edema. Arsenicum is keynoted by sudden, very great weakness.

Carbo vegetabilis is indicated for persons who have never fully recovered from some previous illness. Their breathing is laborious, quick, and short, with burning in the chest, cough with itching of the larynx, spasmodic coughing with gagging and vomiting of mucus, and if things continue to worsen, there will be hemorrhage from the lungs.

Chamomilla vulgaris is a remedy for temperamental and oversensitive persons and for peevish children who demand and seem to be better for being carried about all day. Chamomilla people demand and expect someone to provide instant relief from their suffering, large or small. Lung issues include asthma that was brought on by anger, spells of dry tickling cough, hoarseness, rattling of mucus in a child’s chest, and cough that is much worse between 9 p.m. and midnight but does not wake the child (only the parents).

Kali bichromicum has an affinity for the mucous membranes of the air passages, the nose, and the pharynx. The outstanding keynote is mucus that is thick, sticky, ropy, stringy, tough, and yellow-green in color. This mucus sticks to the throat and can only be drawn out in strings. (This is a pretty good description of whooping cough!) Other lung symptoms include asthma, a dry and annoying cough, cough with pain in the sternum that extends to the shoulders, and wheezing and panting on first waking up.

Phosphorus is a common remedy for respiratory issues such as coughs, bronchitis, and pneumonia. People who need Phosphorus often find their symptoms triggered or worsened by cold air, changing weather, nightfall, thunderstorms, or excessive sensory stimulation. They are frequently sensitive to bright light, loud noise, and tight clothing. Relief typically comes through rest, fresh air, and the comfort of company—and a strong craving for cold drinks is a classic hallmark.

Sulphur is once again a very emotionally driven remedy in many cases. The Sulphur personality is absent-minded and indifferent to personal appearance—“ragged philosophers”. Lung symptoms include pneumonia, a loose cough, tickling in the larynx, asthmatic conditions, difficult respiration of any kind, especially when the person insists they must have the window open if they are going to be able to breathe. A very strong keynote for this remedy is that all ailments and complaints seem to be getting better and then relapse or linger. Sulphur should be considered when a carefully chosen, well-matched homeopathic remedy fails to act, especially in acute diseases.

Congestion #1

Ingredients: Equisteum hymale (Horsetail), Natrum muriaticum (Sodium Chloride), Viola odorata (Sweet-Scented Violet)

Equisetum hymale is also an ingredient in Respiratory #5, discussed above. Additional descriptions of this remedy include, in children, nocturnal bed-wetting, with the bed-wetting being more common only when the child has dreams or nightmares. This remedy is often used in bladder infections and to support the kidney and bladder during infectious attacks (Are you noticing how many ‘respiratory issues’ come with kidney involvement?)

Natrum muriaticum includes a tendency to catch colds, have hay fever, or suffer from a wide range of allergies. The mucous membranes will be dry and then, alternatively, produce white or clear, acrid discharges. There will be buzzing, humming, ringing, and roaring in the ears, as well as great weakness and weariness, with the weakness felt in the morning even before leaving the bed. Emotionally, Nat mur people are depressed with feelings of isolation, the isolation being brought on by their own reserved and introverted personalities.

Viola odorata also has strong mental and emotional symptoms. These include a description of childish behaviors including—but not limited to—weeping with no explanation, refusing to eat what was just demanded, and an ornery aversion to morning. Respiratory issues include the feeling that it is almost impossible to get enough air into the lungs. The chest will feel heavy and as though it is being squeezed. The breathing will be labored and difficult. Mental and emotional symptoms include a description of childish behaviors including—but not limited to—weeping with no explanation, refusing to eat what was just demanded, and an ornery aversion to morning.

Congestion #2

Ingredients: Chicory flower essence, Iris versicolor (Blue Flag), Magnesia sulphurica (Magnesium Sulfate—Epsom salts), Thuja occidentalis (Arborvitae)

Chicory flower essence has very strong mental/emotional imbalances as they apply to caring for or controlling others! There is a martyr syndrome—constantly serving others, but with a lot of built-up resentment. Physical symptoms include congestion in the bronchial tubes with difficulty breathing in and out. The breathing difficulties are linked to holding on to self-inflicted hurt and self-pity and the feeling of not being appreciated for all that one does. Many times, the self-pity becomes a way of manipulating and controlling family members and friends.

Iris versicolor symptoms include congestion and pain in the throat and bronchial tubes. The symptoms get worse in the evening and during the night. There will be ringing in the ears with deafness, and chronic pain in the forehead with a headache that alternates sides of the forehead from time to time or may remain over the left eye. There is profuse salivation and vomiting during the headaches and great itching of the skin at night.

Magnesia sulphurica is a remedy for panting and coughing after exercise or walking. Other keynote respiratory symptoms include dry cough on waking in the morning, which often compels sitting up. There may be the need for expectoration of sour-tasting mucus. Once again, kidney/urinary symptoms are a big part of this remedy.

Thuja occidentalis is specific to asthma and breathing difficulties in children (sometimes linked to vaccinations in my deeply researched opinion and the opinion of many experts both medically oriented and homeopathically well-trained. Thuja has been for many years the leading remedy for ill effects of vaccinations.) Physical symptoms of this remedy include rapid exhaustion and emaciation, chronic sinus infections with the unusual keynote of sweat only on the parts of the body that are uncovered. Emotional and mental symptoms include feeling isolated and all alone, self-contempt, and depression. Symptoms are worse at night and in damp, humid weather.

Decongestion

Ingredients: Eryngium aquaticum (Button Snake-Root), Iris versicolor (Blue Flag), Myrrh (Gum Myrrh), Thymus serpyllum (Wild Thyme)

Eryngium aquaticum acts on the mucous membranes, particularly of the head and chest. Symptoms include thick, yellow discharges, cough, oppression of the chest with the inability to take a full breath, as well as inflammation of the left eye and the eustachian tube with thick yellow mucus discharges from the nose.

Iris versicolor is described in the Congestion #2 remedy immediately above.

Myrrh gum is useful for infected and enlarged tonsils and for inflamed and sore gums in the mouth. Myrrh quickens the pulse, raises the body temperature with great sweating and prostration. This is a remedy for enfeebled states with excessive mucus discharges.

Thymus serpyllum is useful for respiratory infections, particularly in children. Is also effective for dry nervous asthma with nervous underpinnings, as well as pressure in the head that creates ringing in the ears. Once again, a remedy with pronounced effects on the urinary organs is included with this formula that is excellent for the respiratory tract, as this remedy has the elimination of uric acid as its prime function.

HVC

HVC Collection HVC (Honey–Vinegar–Cayenne)

My first acquaintance with HVC was when some of my children were taking voice lessons. At performance times, the teacher insisted that a swallow or two of this concoction be taken just before going on stage. She claimed it would clear the throat and strengthen the vocal cords. Time and many performances certainly proved her right! However, HVC became a staple in our house for a great many additional reasons!

This remedy (energizing drink) can be used warm or cold for flu, increasing energy, relieving sore throat pain, improving circulation, relieving circulation-related headaches, and stabilizing blood pressure. I love it in the middle of a stressful day when I need a bit more energy or stamina to ‘get it all done’ and survive it!

The most important herbal remedy for shock is Cayenne. Cayenne can be administered straight, but I prefer it in that amazing formula we call HVC—honey, apple cider vinegar, and cayenne. Pure Apple Cider Vinegar is also of great benefit to our bodies, both in times of illness and when just needing a bit more energy. (Who can’t benefit from more energy?)  Drink 1/2 to 2 cups as needed, up to 1 qt or more during a day.

HVC should be used cold for bleeding, insect bites, shock, and blood clots. **Note: Warmth increases circulation—do not use hot, or even warm, when trying to stop a hemorrhage or excessive bleeding of any kind.**

HVC (as it is made in my home)

4 Tbs. Honey
4 Tbs. Apple cider vinegar
40 drops Cayenne tincture or 1 ½ tsp Cayenne powder
Water (hot to melt the honey) to make 1 qt of HVC

Featured Essential Oil Blends for Respiratory Health

Mariah Essential Oil Blend LeMariah Essential Oil Blend

LeMariah was created many years ago for use against the nasty flu strains that were, and still are, giving people such a rough time. It seems to be the nature of these new and more virulent strains to manifest very differently from one person to another! One person may sustain more damage to the circulatory system while another person may be hit hardest in the lung and respiratory areas, etc. The wide variety of the antiviral/antibacterial properties of the oils in this blend is responsible for its abilities to combat various flu strains with little regard for how they are manifesting (or what their strain or name is)!

One of the strengths of this blend lies in its ability to clear and support the lungs. Another strength of many of the single oils in this blend is to increase circulation and clear debris from the respiratory and circulatory systems. Yet another ingredient’s strength lies in regenerating damaged tissue and preventing scarring at the site of the injury. This blend is both anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Can be used with LeRevitalize for endocrine support and to increase energy and stamina. Use with LeVitality to further strengthen the heart and circulatory systems.

Examples of the Emotional Patterns of Three Ingredients (only three in the interest of space and time)

LeMariah was really designed to be a blend with outstanding ‘emotional supportive’ properties. However, the single oils in this blend have outstanding emotional support effects. Rosalina, for example, has a high linalool content, making it wonderful for relaxation and calming. The emotional aspects of this oil help build and support self-confidence, encourage self-love, and are grounding and centering.

Spikenard, on the other hand, is the emotional equivalent of packing up and leaving the old ways of thinking and reacting behind. Spikenard oil is not about repair of attitudes; it is about doing a clean sweep emotionally and beginning again with a more realistic and, perhaps, even kinder and more tolerant perspective.

Helichrysum is often used in emotional healing. It helps us get in touch with unresolved emotions and gently restores memories that have been deeply buried in the subconscious mind. Helichrysum helps release defense mechanisms and offers comfort while we are processing difficult emotions. It also helps supply the needed self-confidence to make hard decisions.

Ingredients: Bay, Helichrysum Angustifolia, Manuka, Opoponax, Peppermint, Ravensara, Rosalina, Spearmint, Spikenard, Thyme, Turmeric

Grateful Heart Essential Oil

LeGrateful Heart Essential Oil

LeGrateful Heart creates tender feelings of empathy, gratitude, tolerance, and compassion. As a child, I was known for my sunny disposition. The essential oils in this blend are some of my favorites for returning me to that childish exuberance and for tempering the seemingly natural tendency of the adult me to whine a bit from time to time. Instead, I feel gratitude for all the blessings that I have and for all of the things that those around me do to make my life more beautiful every day!

I have been told by many (and have experienced it myself) that LeGrateful Heart has a marked effect on any dark clouds of depression that may be hovering over us or haunting our lives!. It can be useful in relaxing the mind and body. Dissatisfaction and discontentment are destructive to the nervous and immune systems. LeGrateful Heart addresses these imbalances and can provide support and healing for these feelings and, in my experience, bring about better health and faster healing when some nasty ‘bug’ does take hold!

The aroma of this blend is nice enough to sear as a perfume or a cologne. That matters to me because neighbors years ago remarked that it was ‘amusing’ to try and guess what ‘flower’ I would be smelling like today!

Bountiful Essential Oil Blend

LeBountiful Essential Oil

This energizing blend aids us in thinking clearly about money issues and lessens the stress in our minds and hearts as we deal with tension in these areas.

I remember very well the creation of LeBountiful, years and years ago now. It was a difficult time for my husband and me. We were struggling to find answers to his health problems, and there was considerable tension and worry about money, bills, and even daily expenses attendant with raising children. This blend didn’t change the circumstances, but it did change our attitudes, our perceptions, and our ability to ‘hang in there’ and work together to find solutions! It was incredible—the creation of it and the changes it brought to the atmosphere in our home!

One of the most outstanding effects of this blend is the feelings of security—tomorrow will be a better day—and the feelings of thankfulness and even a desire to be generous with what we do have and a mindfulness of the needs of those around us! We discovered that these feelings bring the blessings of heaven down on our heads! Over the years, I have realized that LeBountiful, in addition to everything else, helps us eliminate any tendencies we might have toward greed and selfishness.

Chamomile Essential OilsChamomile Essential Oils

Chamomile Roman

The aroma of Chamomile Roman, in my opinion, is the most relaxing scent in the entire essential oil world. Chamomile Roman is powerfully soothing. The soothing action of this oil applies to both physical and emotional conditions alike. Diffused, this oil creates an atmosphere of peace and patience.

It is this regulation of vital energy that makes Chamomile Roman so powerfully soothing to both physical and emotional conditions. In fact, so powerfully does this oil unravel the negative emotions behind physical ailments that it is sometimes hard to tell if it is working at an emotional or a physical level. Chamomile Roman is of great benefit in the treatment of chronic headaches, insomnia, nervous indigestion and nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome—to name just a few.

One of the outstanding uses of Chamomile Roman essential oil is for babies with colic, babies who startle awake and then cry for a long time, and infants that are just plain fussy and want to be held and comforted most of the day and night.

This variety of Chamomile, though containing less deep blue azulene, has anti-inflammatory properties. It is of benefit when applied to aching muscles and joints. Because it is so mild and soothing, Chamomile Roman is wonderful in the tub or used in a compress. This oil is very soothing for menstrual cramps, nausea, PMS, tension, and nerves.

Chamomile Roman cleanses the blood and reduces allergic reactions. Allergy sufferers can find a great deal of relief by carrying an inhaler or just a few drops of this oil on a tissue or cotton ball. Chamomile Roman is an antihistamine and soothing to inflamed tissues.

Chamomile German

One of the most important actions of Chamomile German is on the solar plexus. The solar plexus is the major nerve center that lies midway between the gut instinct area of the abdomen and the empathetic region of the heart. The solar plexus also lies at the crossroads between the left and right sides of our energetic bodies. This location puts the solar plexus in charge of balancing our need to be in control with our need to gently nurture.

A buildup of energy and tension in the solar plexus intensifies our emotional needs. If we feel that our needs are not being met, we can become frustrated and irritable. We may react by trying harder to control the people around us, manipulating them into meeting our perceived needs. The aroma of Chamomile German can release the tension that is building up in the solar plexus area.
This species of Chamomile helps us learn to trust the unfolding of events in our lives. It helps us remember that when life isn’t working as we planned, it may be working towards a better plan.

The Latin name for the Chamomile family, Matricaria, means “caring for the womb” and emphasizes the centuries-old use of this herb for female complaints. Chamomile German is excellent for digestive problems, especially if there is an emotional component to them.

Chamomile German is a necessary ingredient in blends used to treat ADHD in children and anxiety attacks in adolescents and adults. This oil has an outstanding history in the treatment of headaches, insomnia, and nervous tension. This oil should be tried for severe skin ulcerations or infections, dermatitis, and eczema. For those with sensitive skin, application of this oil over a period of time can strengthen the skin’s protective barrier.

Featured Carrier Oil for Respiratory Health

Mullein Carrier OilMullein Carrier Oil

Mullein has been used for centuries because of its outstanding medicinal properties. The herb Mullein grows in dry, barren places (such as my under-watered and under-cared-for herb garden). Following the ancient law of signatures, this would indicate that Mullein is an herb for respiratory conditions, especially those where the lungs need “drying out.” Mullein also has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic properties, thus increasing its value in respiratory ailments, and is certainly recommended for use as a carrier oil with these conditions.

Mullein Oil is one of the ingredients in EO made by Butterfly Express LLC for use with earaches and infections. Mullein is often added to herbal poultices to provide emollient and healing properties and to offset the astringency of some anti-infectious herbs. The infused oil can be used in much the same way.

Mullein Oil, as a carrier oil, should be used when applying oils to the chest for infections, coughs, and congestion. It can be used in the ears, alone or as part of the EO recipe, to relieve the pain of ear infections and fight the bacteria involved. It can also be of benefit as a carrier oil when working with inflammation and pain. Mullein is gentle enough to be used on babies for diaper rash and for cracked nipples with nursing mothers.

The various remedies in this kit target the culprit bacteria/virus in both prevention and recovery from situations. Various remedies here target the lungs and the bronchi, the digestive system including diarrhea, energy and alertness both when sick or well, response to stress or trauma, and so much more that I haven’t mentioned here.

I am proud and happy to see that all but the Blessed Water/Homeopathic remedies were each created by me, and everything in this kit was part of my walk with learning, experimenting, and using alternative remedies over a lifetime! I consider the remedies chosen for this kit to be a ‘must’ for every home! Teaching others about the blessings of alternative health care has been a major focus of my life over the last 50 years and one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Butterfly companies all those years ago!
