July – First Aid

Before we begin today’s discussion of essential oils, herbs, and Blessed Waters (homeopathics), I would like to provide a little bit of extraneous, but I feel quite necessary, information. I searched both the Butterfly Express and Butterfly Expressions sites and was disappointed to find that the information I have written and taught in various places over the years on the topic I am about to summarize briefly below is not to be found on either site. It doesn’t seem to be in any of the books I have written, either. (However, I made only a rudimentary search, so . . .) If this oversight is actually real, I intend to remedy the situation as soon as I can find a minute (or a few hours, as it will likely be).

Two key factors in understanding essential oils are recognizing the differences in healing properties among plant families and understanding how various parts of the same plant can offer different therapeutic benefits. It probably doesn’t surprise you that the medicinal properties of the conifer family (spruce trees, for example) are very different from the healing properties of the various herbaceous or ornamental plants (such as the Lauraceae, Labiate, Compositae, and Umbelliferae families).

Even within the same plant family, whether an essential oil has been created from the wood, the seed, the root, or the leaves, dramatically affects the healing properties of that essential oil, and does so to an incredible degree.

A well-built blend allows us to combine, synergistically, the benefits of several plant families as well as the healing capacities of various plant parts, all with the goal of increasing the capabilities of each single essential oil. Just as a chocolate cake is more pleasing—and tastes better—than the varying ingredients separately, an essential oil blend has the potential of being so much more than any of the single oil ingredients by themselves

Let’s keep this information in mind as we discuss various essential oil blends in the pages of this (and every) newsletter.

Super Electrolyte Complex

Super Electrolyte Complex

Electrolytes are essential minerals. However, electrolytes are unique in that they carry an electrical charge, positive or negative. Why are electrolytes essential, critically so, to the health of our bodies? The electrical charge makes it possible for them to help carry out some very important functions within us, such as transmitting nerve signals. Among the nerve signals, electrolytes support and the signals that allow our muscles to contract properly. Remember, the heart is a muscle, as is the uterus in women.

In our bodies, there needs to be the correct amount of water both inside and outside of each cell everywhere in our bodies. Electrolytes assist in maintaining the balance of fluids. They keep the cells from being too full or, alternatively, shriveling up and dying. Hydration is another simple term for fluid balance.

This electrolyte complex should be added to water, as needed. It contains no sugars or artificial ingredients.

Salve Sampler

Salve Sampler

Salves are such an effective and efficient way to bring the benefits of herbal healers onto the skin and into the body! This sampler pack contains 1/2 oz sample bottles of four healing salves. I have one of each of these in the bathrooms of my home and, sometimes, even one or more on my bedside table!

The kit contains BHM salve—the first salve I created for the Butterfly line. It is a basic, yet powerful salve for speeding the healing of bones, muscles, and other body tissues. BHM Plus is the basic BHM recipe with four additional herbs added. These herbs make BHM Plus an effective and powerful drawing salve—far more effective than anything else I have ever seen, both herbal and prescription. CM salve is my go-to salve for rashes and skin irritations of whatever variety, except fungal. Why? Any sort of salve or carrier oil can feed a fungal infection! CM is useful for bones and muscles, as well.

I am giving Miracle Salve a small paragraph of its own because it deserves it. This salve was given the name ‘Miracle’ because it has, quite often, performed miracles in the healing of burns, from mild sunburns through minor kitchen accidents to very severe burns that cover a great deal of body surface. If I could have only one salve in my house, it would be this one. And I would certainly not consider a first aid kit even basically stocked without it!

Crystal Clear Essential Oil Blend

While LeCrystal Clear is often praised for boosting focus and clarity, it also has some powerful first aid applications, especially when it comes to head injuries, trauma, and nervous system support.

The oils in LeCrystal Clear are known to stimulate the brain, increase oxygen to the cells, and support circulation, all of which are critical after a fall, concussion, or impact to the head. It can help reduce brain fog, improve alertness, and support the body’s natural recovery process.

In addition to its physical benefits, LeCrystal Clear also helps soothe emotional shock. After an accident or traumatic event, the mind can feel scattered or overwhelmed. This blend works to calm the nervous system, bring balance, and provide mental clarity when you need it most.

For first aid, LeCrystal Clear can be applied to the back of the neck, on the temples, or inhaled directly. It may also be gently massaged into the soles of the feet to support grounding and full-body calming.

Whether you’re dealing with a head bump, mental confusion after an accident, or emotional disorientation, LeCrystal Clear offers natural support for both body and mind, helping you return to a place of balance and clear thinking.

Patches Essential Oil Blend

A quick look at the LePatches blend illustrates the principles mentioned above very well! The single essential oils that make up LePatches come from six different plant families. These are Myrtaceae, Burseraceae, Zingiberaceae, Lauraceae, Labiatae, and Coniferae. Plants parts used? Also six different parts—resin, leaves, grass, flowers, wood or bark. Familiarity with (or a study of) the healing capabilities of these plant families and these plant parts will give us a very good understanding of this powerful and well-built essential oil blend. But, for today, let’s just sum this blend up a bit!

LePatches was created to facilitate the repair and healing of damaged tissues, tendons, and ligaments. (Trust me when I say that raising my accident-prone children—and husband—on our farm property required a great deal of this sort of repairing!) This blend also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, LePatches improves circulation, bringing rapid and more complete healing by bringing oxygen and nutrients to the injured (or arthritic) tissues and joints.

As I asked people to use, evaluate, and comment on this blend when it was new, I was more than a little surprised by the consistency of certain comments. These comments had to do with the emotional, spiritual, and/or mental healing benefits people were experiencing when using LePatches. It soon became apparent that the “patching up” (healing) on every level—not just the physical—was an important part of this blend.

SpiceC Essential Oil Blend

This blend should, for sure and for certain, be reached for whenever any type of oncoming illness is even suspected. This and the blend I named LeDeliverance (and LeDeliverance Plus, as well) are the first things I reach for if there is even the possibility that I have been exposed to something by someone!

In addition to the oils contained in LeSpiceC, LeDeliverance contains Oregano and Thyme. LeDeliverance Plus also contains a bit of Garlic (nature’s strongest anti-biotic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and more, essential oil in my opinion). However, the strong Cinnamon aroma of  LeSpiceC, in the opinion of most people, is more pleasant than the aroma of either LeDeliverance blend. AND, in most situations, LeSpiceC has proven to be more than adequate as an anti-everything-nasty blend! Certainly, LeSpiceC tastes better when a drop or two is placed on a toothbrush or used as a mouthwash or sore throat gargle!

This is an excellent blend for diffusing if anyone in the house or workplace is running about with a cold or coming down with the flu!

Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oils, of which the globulus variety is most common and most researched, have many properties of use in first aid situations. The following is only a short list—just coming off the top of my head!

Eucalyptus essential oil is antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, antibiotic (in a good way), anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-neuralgic (relieves pain, especially along nerves and in nerve bundles), febrifuge (relieves and/or lowers fever), expectorant ( liquefies and clears phlegm and mucous from airways), and is anti-parasitic. It does not need to be—and should not be—taken internally for this situation (parasites).

Eucalyptus, as you saw from the list above, is a very versatile oil! While protecting from illnesses prevalent in the winter months, its application or inhalation during the summer is cooling to the body.

First aid uses? Apply diluted—alone or in a blend—for muscle aches, headaches, blood sugar support (including hypoglycemia and diabetes), and skin rashes. When applied to the neck or forehead, it can help clear sinus congestion and is beneficial for all types of respiratory infections. If I thought a moment or two longer, I could likely go on and on!

Mentally and emotionally? The best description I have ever come up with for this family of essential oils is that it calms our spirits while opening our minds to see possibilities and even the best way ahead clearly! Eucalyptus seems to strip away our doubts about our abilities, removing hesitation while giving us a bit of a push forward in the direction we know we need to and should go.

Frankincense Carterii Essential Oil

Frankincense is considered a holy oil in the Middle East and has been used since ancient times in many parts of the world. For me, frankincense improves my ability, as well as my desire, to communicate with Heaven.

In ancient Israel, Frankincense was used to anoint the newborn sons of kings and priests. Perhaps, the magi brought Frankincense to the infant Jesus as a symbolic representation of who he really was. Frankincense was also used during the time of approaching death. It was thought to assist a person in making the transition from life to death. Certainly, Christ’s eventual death for all of us was the purpose of his life. I find the reverse symbolism of life from death—resurrection—to be equally powerful. Frankincense was also used in the embalming of the dead. Perhaps its inclusion in the rare and precious gifts brought to the Savior of the World was an acknowledgment of His life and mission.

Frankincense has a reputation worldwide for crossing the blood/brain barrier, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the pineal and pituitary glands within the brain. It is the sesquiterpenes contained in Frankincense that give it this ability. There are many essential oils besides Frankincense that contain sesquiterpenes. Some of them even contain more sesquiterpenes than Frankincense. However, Frankincense certainly seems to be unique in its abilities in this regard!

Frankincense is of benefit in any condition that is caused or worsened by nervous tension and emotional trauma, making it useful in any sort of injury or event that requires first aid treatment! Emotionally, in situations requiring first aid treatment and traumatic events of both physical, emotional, or mental types, frankincense leaves us with a renewed or stronger ability to connect the past with the future. Why is this important? This allows us to connect cause and effect, actions and consequences, to one another. As we make these connections, we can choose our course more wisely and eliminate the need to repeat ‘teaching moments’ that hurt over and over again.

Frankincense is useful for skin disorders and circulation problems. It has a very beneficial effect on respiratory conditions such as cough, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Rosalina Essential Oil

Rosalina’s official Latin name is Melaleuca ericifolia. As you can see from the name, Rosalina is member of the Melaleuca genus of the Mrytaceae family. The melaleuca genus is composed of over 400 plants, approximately 90 of which can be found as essential oils! Butterfly Express LLC carries 7 of these melaleuca essential oils!

I, personally, love Rosalina essential oil, as well as the other melaleuca oils—Nerolina, Niaouli, Manuka and Lemon Scented Tea Tree. I even like Cajeput a little bit. I do not, however, care much for the aroma of  Tea Tree! This aversion makes the more pleasant melaleuca varieties very important and useful to me in first aid situations!

Rosalina combines the calming, soothing aroma and nature (and aroma) of lavender with the strong antimicrobial properties of the Tea Tree and Cajeput members of the melaleuca family of essential oils. This beautifully aromatic essential oil is excellent for respiratory tract infections and congestion, and is a great tea tree (melaleuca) oil for use with children. Effective, yet pleasant.

Rosalina, while a potent antimicrobial oil, is a gentle heart tonic and treatment for an out-of-balance heart chakra. Rosalina is gentle, yet powerful, and addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of illness or accidents.

CR

CR was formerly referred to as ‘Crisis”, referring to the fact that I created this formula to be used in tea or tincture form as the first response to any oncoming illness. It is a wonderful first response for sore throat, colds, and flu.

Three of the herbs in this formula—Blue Vervain, Black Cohosh, and Lobelia have strong nervine, antispasmodic, and pain-killing properties. In addition to strengthening the immune response against invading bacteria, these three herbs relieve the headache and bone and muscle pain that so often accompany illness. Prickly Ash is considered by some, including myself, to be much like Cayenne in its ability to increase circulation. It is often used when Cayenne has caused upset to the stomach in a person previously. Prickly Ash is, however, a valuable herb in its own right. The bark of Prickly Ash was listed in the Pharmacopeia of the United States from 1820 to 1926.

CR needs to be taken with an infection-fighting combination such as RC or IF, along with herbs to strengthen whatever body system is under attack at the moment.

PN

There are only four ingredients in the PN (formerly Pain) formula. Each is outstanding and each is unique in its properties and capabilities. I will provide only a brief synopsis of each one here, and only as it applies to pain relief. I hope that you will go to the website, ButterflyExpress.shop, for more information.

St. John’s Wort is both a potent pain reliever for nerve pain of any kind and a nervous system tonic. This means that the pain relief is always accompanied by nourishment and strengthening of the nervous system. St. John’s Wort may be taken internally and applied externally for nerve pain and any kind of trauma, physical or emotional. Also useful for anxiety, nervous exhaustion, and for stomach ulcers brought on or contributed to by stress and nervousness.

Valerian was known as “all-heal” in the Middle Ages and is still referred to by that name in older herbal texts. Valerian’s main impact is on the nerves, brain, liver, and heart. Because it heals and rebuilds in these areas, people feel calmed, strengthened, and uplifted by this herb, even when they are using it mostly for pain relief at the time. I cannot resist reminding you, the reader, that Valerian contains large amounts of calcium and comes with its own supply of magnesium so the calcium is readily absorbed and made available to build bones, strengthen nerves, and relax smooth muscles as well as relieve pain.

Valerian is not suitable for everybody and should be used with particular caution with children. Indications of this situation would be that the person, instead of being calmed by Valerian, feels wired, agitated, or nervous. Simply discontinue use and try a nervine formula that does not contain Valerian. BBL, NT, or NS would all make good choices. The NV combination contains 1 part Valerian and should probably be avoided if there has been a reaction to Valerian in the past. Please do not let this information scare you away from the use of this wonderful herb. Valerian, in both herbal and essential oil forms, is one of the world’s greatest healers. It is one of my favorite and most relied-on remedies. Reactions to it are rare and pass very quickly!

Wild Lettuce has very effective pain-relieving capabilities. It is also a safe sedative that can be given to adults and children to encourage a restful night’s sleep. A small dose can calm over-excitability in children and nervous tension in adults.

Cayenne is included in this formula, as it usually is anywhere, to encourage circulation and to carry the healing properties of other ingredients more rapidly and effectively to the places where they are needed. Cayenne is discussed in a bit more detail following the discussion of BBL that comes next.

BBL

BBL is made with Lobelia and combined with Blue Vervain, Blue Cohosh, Black Cohosh, and Skullcap to produce an antispasmodic formula, nervine, and pain reliever. Antispasmodic means that BBL will provide relief from anything that manifests with spasms or pain with a pulsing quality. Examples might be coughing, muscle or abdominal cramping, or any kind of pain that pulses, such as a toothache, earache, certain types of stomachache, pleurisy, and boils.

I smashed the index finger on my right hand thoroughly one day, and the pain was excruciating. I put Arnica oil on it for the swelling. I poured some BBL tincture into a small paper cup and put my finger in it. The pain was manageable that way, and within a few hours, most of the discoloration, swelling, and pain were gone. I, and others around me, have done similar things with other body parts!

BBL can also be taken internally when pain relief is desired. A trip to the dentist (and afterwards, as well) is one such place where BBL shines. Please see the more detailed description found on the Butterfly websites. This is one of my all-time favorite and most often reached for remedies.

IF

Perhaps, if you are not already ill and are not going to be gone for long, there will be little need for infection-fighting herbs. However, I have known more than one situation where a person had been gone from home for only a day or so when something nasty came along and tried to take him down and out! Examples: an abscessing tooth (that was a nasty one!), an oncoming sore throat or head cold, or a cut finger or toe, etc.

IF, which stands for Infection Fighter, is a very effective all-purpose infection-fighting formula. It can be taken internally or used as a tea for external compresses, washes, or soaks. It may be used for any type of infection—infected injuries, sore throats, ear infections, and anything else that you can think of.

Cayenne

(Once again, please read the more detailed description of this amazing herb found on the Butterfly websites. Cayenne is about as close to a cure-all herb as there is in nature. If I could only have one herb in my house, Cayenne would be the one that I would choose.)

The sensation (that burning feeling) Cayenne creates on the tongue actually stimulates the brain to release endorphins. Endorphins block pain receptors throughout the body. In addition, endorphins induce feelings of well-being. A positive attitude alone can have a beneficial effect on healing, especially with accidents and chronic illnesses.
In a study conducted at the Yale Pain Management Center in New Haven, CT, capsaicin (the active ingredient in Cayenne) was shown to dramatically reduce the pain of the mouth sores that result from chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Interestingly, capsaicin was delivered in taffy—chosen because the sugar reduced the initial burn, the soft texture didn’t irritate the mouth, and it stayed in the mouth long enough for the capsaicin to desensitize the nerves.
Cayenne is the #1 stimulant herb. It is the purest and most powerful of all the medicinal herbs. The best description I have ever read of Cayenne is that it causes “the fires of life to burn more brightly.” This alone qualifies Cayenne as a remedy of choice in situations where first-aid treatment is required.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a useful component of a first aid kit for several reasons. 1) As a tea, peppermint is well-known for its ability to calm upset stomachs, relieve nausea, and even reduce flatulence. 2) Peppermint leaves, moistened and made into a compress then placed on the temples or forehead, can help relieve the pain of a headache. I would suggest drinking some peppermint tea at the same time. 3) A damp tea bag of peppermint or a peppermint compress can significantly reduce swelling and pain from bruises. 4) Peppermint tea, if inhaled while steeping over a heat source, can open up nasal passages and help to clear the throat and lungs.

It should be remembered that, like many stimulants that are also analgesic, they are relaxing in small quantities but can be overly stimulating in large quantities.

It should also be remembered that peppermint leaves are very sensitive to heat. When making them into a tea, the leaves should never be boiled. The most potent peppermint tea I ever made used fresh leaves and lukewarm water. It had little color but a strong aroma—and instead of relaxing the poor man who drank it, it kept him up nearly all night! Clearly, the volatile essential oils remained intact, something we’d never achieved with a regular cup of tea before.

Yarrow

Yarrow as an essential oil (and discussed below) is equally as useful—if not more so—as an herbal remedy!
I simply cannot take up sufficient space here to describe this wonderful and versatile herb! Even the websites and the books I have written do not begin to give you all you might someday wish you knew about the many uses of Yarrow. However, if you are going to add Yarrow to your first aid kit or even hike or camp in the wild where it grows so prevalently, please study this herb further with information from Butterfly and elsewhere.

As a first aid remedy for deep cuts, Yarrow in herbal form is every bit as effective as the essential oil. Simply macerate (crush) the leaves, place them over the damaged area, and secure with a bandage to keep it in place. The Yarrow will draw the edges of the cut together while controlling the bleeding. What do I mean by ‘control’? I mean creating a wound that’s strong enough to eliminate bacteria or other infectious agents, while also stopping the bleeding. (If you use the herb as described above, some of the Yarrow may attach itself to the wound, inside the skin, and sticking out. Do not be alarmed. Simply trim the edges tightly against the skin. The body will take care of the rest. Really! I have seen this—more than once!)

Comfrey

The medicinal uses for Comfrey are so extensive that to do them real justice would take several pages. I will mention a few of the more unusual ones here, as space permits.
The pituitary gland helps maintain the calcium-phosphorus balance, which is absolutely necessary for the uptake of calcium. Please think for a moment of all of the health woes a person avoids when calcium uptake is sufficient, without calcium being deposited wrongfully as kidney or gallstones.
First Aid? There is nothing better than comfrey for healing broken bones. Dr. Christopher, a great herbalist of a former time, claimed that Comfrey would “cause broken bones to knit in half the usual time.” My husband can assure you of that. Not only do the bones heal quickly, but they heal properly!
It is equally impressive for healing wounds of any kind. I love comfrey leaf tea for use as an ingestible tea, or as a soak or poultice for injured, in any fashion, body parts.
Here is a quote I have used often, which is included on the butterflyexpressions.org site. Comfrey was praised by Dr. Shook, a great herbalist of the latter part of the 20th century and a contemporary of Dr. John Christopher.
“This is one of Nature’s great masterpieces, one of the most important therapeutic agents ever discovered by man. It will cure all curable cases, and in the incurable ones it will soothe, comfort, support the heart, check hemorrhage, ease cough, help breathing, and check diarrhea—in cases of internal injury, broken bones, torn ligaments, and lacerated tissue, it is the quickest, safest and most certain healer. It does not seem to matter much which part of the body is broken or torn, either internally or externally, Comfrey will heal it quickly. It is a great cell proliferant or new cell grower, it grows new flesh and bone alike, stops hemorrhage, and is wonderful for coughs, soothing and healing the inflamed tissues in a most remarkable manner.”

Echinacea

For an herbal person, I am certainly not skilled in growing things! (Understatement!) However, I have Echinacea growing in my personal herb bed, and I tend to it carefully! Why? Because this is one herb I would never want to be without. Fortunately, the purperea variety grows very prevalently all around me in the valley in which I live.

Michael T. Murray, in his book The Healing Power of Herbs, does a marvelous treatise on the seven most important constituents of plants from the Echinacea group. He includes in his research both angustifolia and purpurea, along with others that I have never heard of. I would highly recommend this chapter and the entire book. It describes only a small group of herbs, but it is both thorough and scientific.
In my own book, Butterfly Miracles with Herbal Remedies, I describe in some detail the uses for this amazing plant! I could have used twice the space and still longed for more! I will try to briefly sum up the healing properties of Echinacea here.
First are its powerful immune-regulating and anti-inflammatory properties. Rather than simply “stimulating” the immune system, echinacea helps balance and enhance its overall function. This helps to eliminate allergies as well as protect us from and help us combat invading microbes that are responsible for infectious diseases. Echinacea is easily the equivalent of Red Clover as a blood purifier and is recommended for chemical poisoning, candida, fungal infections, ulcers, and clearing the lymph glands!
Murray gives Echinacea credit for tissue regeneration abilities, anti-inflammatory properties, antiviral, antibacterial, and even anti-cancer properties.
Echinacea contains vitamins A, C, and E (this is somewhat unusual in herbs), calcium, iron, iodine (making it a great thyroid herb), potassium, and sulfur. Echinacea is also an excellent herb to use in the recovery stage of an illness, especially since we can no longer obtain that wonderful herb Ma Huang. Echinacea is particularly useful in wound healing.

Rescue Remedy (5 Flower Formula)

Emergency first aid treatment should almost always include Rescue Remedy, a Bach Flower Essence remedy also known as Five Flower Formula. This is a remedy that I have with me, in easy reach, at all times. There is one in my kitchen cupboard, in each bathroom, in my car, in my purse, and in any other bag or suitcase that I may travel with. In my kitchen cupboard, 2 bottles are kept in a bright pink box. It is well-known by the family (even grandchildren passing through) that to use one of these bottles and not put it back is a serious offence! It is simply not done! Why? Because Rescue Remedy is one remedy I do not want to have to search for when it is needed!
Rescue Remedy can be regarded as a single remedy, although it is a composite of 5 flower essences. Rescue Remedy is most effective when used on the occasion of any profound trauma or emergency, in helping the person cope with extreme pain and shock. Rescue Remedy brings immediate calm and helps with the physical and emotional aspects of shock. This formula is also useful for energy work when the client becomes too involved in the trauma they are trying to work on. I have also found this remedy to be a wonderful resource for children who are upset or frightened.
I am going to tell you about the remedy by giving a brief description of each ingredient.
Cherry Plum (flower essence) increases feelings of being guided and protected. It nourishes spiritual surrender and trust, allowing for stability even in times of crisis. This remedy alleviates fears of losing control in stressful situations and calms the mind during times of extremes of tension and fear.

Clematis (flower essence) is for states of shock where there is a need to bring the person into focus on the present moment because it encourages practical and helpful responses to stress and injury.

Impatiens (flower essence) helps to inspire patience and acceptance of circumstances and the flow of things around them. (I love that the name Impatiens reminds me of the lack of patience I so often display when I am under stress!) Impatiens is in this remedy to provide the calm assurance that things are being taken care of in a timely, or at least acceptable, fashion and that things will turn out OK.

Rock Rose (flower essence) is a remedy for inspiring courage, inner peace, and tranquility when facing great challenges or even injuries. This remedy helps to bring calmness in the face of deep fear, terror, panic, and the fear of death or serious pain. Rock Rose is of value whenever there is extreme fear, pain, grief, or loneliness.

Star of Bethlehem (flower essence) increases a person’s ability to accept help from the spiritual realm. Star of Bethlehem is a deeply restorative remedy—it can bring a sense of calm, peacefulness, and the assurance that there is help from loved ones beyond the veil. This remedy is useful for any shock or trauma—it makes little difference whether the event was recent or was in the distant past.

All five of these remedies may be used on their own, but they are particularly effective when combined into a single bottle and administered together in this manner.

I also want to give you a little bit of information about Flower Essence Remedies, of which Rescue Remedy/Five Flower Formula is the crowning achievement, in general. I will quote almost directly from one of the books that I have written on homeopathic/blessed water theory and remedies. The book is Butterfly Miracles with Homeopathic Remedies Book One (the pink one). I realize this will make for a lengthy discussion, but I think it is important to understand the tremendous impact that flower essence remedies can have on health—physical, mental, and spiritual.

Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician and the creator of the original 36 Bach Flower Remedies, wrote in the early 1930’s that, “Behind all disease lies our fears, our anxieties, our greeds, our likes and dislikes. True healing involves treating the very basis of the cause of the suffering. Therefore, no effort directed to the body alone can do more than superficially repair damage. Treat people for their emotional unhappiness, allow them to be happy, and they will become well”. While the idea of emotional underpinnings to physical ailments is finding acceptance today, this was truly revolutionary thinking in Dr. Bach’s day.
Flower essences, while considered by many to be homeopathics, are created a little bit differently and work by slightly different principles. There are no poisonous or inorganic substances used in their creation. They are made from flowers, considered to be the crowning achievement and highest frequency cycle of plant life. These remedies are prepared from a sun infusion of wildflowers or garden blossoms in natural and very pure water. This solution is then diluted following homeopathic protocols. They are used only in the first 1 to 4 dilutions, making them very low potency, mild remedies.
Instead, as Dr. Bach described the process, they “flood our natures with the particular virtue we need, and wash out from us the fault that is causing the harm”. Flooding our natures with the opposing virtue is the way to eradicate any fault, in my opinion. Focusing on the fault only feeds the negative and gives the fault more power.
Perhaps Dr. Bach’s explanation is an oversimplification, but it does explain the action of these remedies quite well. For example, Holly flower essence does not create feelings of envy, jealousy, or hatred in persons to whom it is given, even in large quantities or over long periods of time. Instead, Holly flower essence brings a feeling of connection and love into our hearts, even if we have been troubled in our lives by jealousy, envy, lack of connection to others, and even strong feelings of hatred.
Flower essences address our emotions. In fact, flower essence literature contains no reference to physical ailments at all. The descriptions of the states that the remedies address concern themselves completely with emotional and mental health.
I am not sure where the designation ‘Rescue Remedy’ first came from. It is exactly the same formula as the Flower Essence Society remedy called Five Flower Formula (which was Dr. Bach’s original name for this combination remedy). But ‘Rescue Remedy’ is a very apt description of the way in which this remedy works, no matter where you obtain (or make it yourself) from!

ER911

A dear friend of mine, many years ago, had the brilliant idea of adding a few drops of Arnica Montana homeopathic remedy to the Rescue Remedy/Five Flower formula described above. The addition of Arnica adds whole new dimensions to the Rescue Remedy formula. (Please see the description of Arnica, presented in slightly more detail, below.)

Briefly here, Arnica is the #1 remedy for any type of injury, even if received years earlier. Arnica promotes healing, controls bleeding, reduces swelling, and prevents infection. Keynote: The person often refuses examination or assistance, telling you they are just fine when they obviously are not.

I typically reach for Rescue Remedy if I am not seeing the things appropriate to Arnica. If necessary, on seeing the symptoms described for Arnica beginning to emerge, I switch to ER911 or simply ingest a little bit of Arnica homeopathic/blessed water by itself.

Arnica montana

Some conditions for which the use of Arnica is appropriate and amazing: Bruising; sprains; strains; falls; blows; sports injuries; overexertion; exhaustion; headache; pain; inflammation; bleeding; head injuries; eye injuries; joint pain; post surgery pain; shock; injuries to muscles; sore, bruised feeling all over the body.

Arnica is also amazingly effective where there has been bleeding into soft tissues and is useful post-operatively for pain and to promote rapid healing.
Arnica is an excellent remedy for use in labor when the labor pains are weak and intermittent, and/or if the woman feels that she is bruising and swelling internally. As a midwife, I—and many others—noticed that using Arnica oil on our hands and the woman’s perineum during delivery significantly reduced swelling and lowered the risk of tearing delicate tissues. The Blessed Water/homeopathic remedy is wonderful when used immediately postpartum to alleviate symptoms from whatever bruising and soreness was allowed to occur (especially in hospital settings where Arnica was not used during the delivery!).

Keynote mental/emotional symptoms include a great fear of being hurt. This fear may be of being hurt emotionally or physically. Fear of being approached too closely or touched by other people. Fear of approaching others too closely and hurting them on either a physical or emotional level.

Symphytum officinale

Symphytum officinale is the Latin name for Comfrey. Homeopathic/Blessed Water remedies, especially those made from herbs, are always designated by the Latin name. Comfrey, as an herb, is described above in the section ‘Featured Herbs’. The description there also fits the Blessed Water remedy, with the addition of some distinct mental and emotional aspects. Blessed Water remedies work rapidly and address some things not as easily recognized when dealing with an herb, rather than an energetic remedy, such as Blessed waters and homeopathics.

Symphytum officinale aids the body in the uptake and distribution of calcium, thus assisting the healing of bones and tissues. Comfrey, as an herb, has been referred to as knit-bone for many years because it speeds the healing and strength of broken bones and speeds the fading of bruises as a result of bone fractures. Comfrey is just as effective for healing wounds and reconstructing damaged tissues. Note the italicized words above, ‘speeds the healing and strength’. Energetic remedies (Blessed Waters and Homeopathics) work even more rapidly and apply more fully to every aspect—physical, emotional, mental, and energetic blueprint—of the body and soul.
This remedy is indicated for injuries to the eyes from blunt instruments or from a blow to the eyeball, eye socket, or sclera, especially if there has been bleeding inside the eye. The Blessed Water remedy is effective even when there has been long-term pain from an injury that happened months or even years ago. This remedy is also useful for conjunctivitis.

Bioplasma

Bioplasma is a combination of all 12 Biochemic (cell salt) remedies. Biochemic (cell salt) remedies are usually low potency remedies, usually 6X to 30X. They are very effective at these potencies and, in these low potencies, they certainly fit Samuel Hahnemann’s description of a remedy that restores health rapidly, gently, and permanently without causing harm. These remedies encourage the blood toward a more balanced and stable condition. They also encourage the uptake and utilization of minerals in our bodies.
The book Twelve Essential Minerals for Cellular Health, by David R. Card, is an inexpensive and compact reference book, and one of my favorites on the subject of cell salt remedies. In this book, Mr. Card has placed, in user-friendly charts and lists, the best information from his many larger books. This book is an excellent resource for both the novice and skilled practitioner alike.
The most incredible thing about Bioplasma (all 12 cell salts in one remedy) is its ability to coagulate the blood and stop bleeding, even when just taken internally rather than applied to the site of the bleeding. I have seen, many times over the years, demonstrations of this incredible ability to stop bleeding!
Bioplasma also stabilizes the nerves and promotes healing in damaged nerve tissues and in any type of wound. Bioplasma has, reportedly, been effective for nervous tension and headaches brought on by worry and nervousness.

Traumatic Experiences

The purpose of low potency combination remedies is best described as being a ‘first response’, an immediate first aid remedy to be used as near the time of the accident or injury as possible. Amazing results are to be expected but in the instance of lingering symptoms over time, deeper remedies may be called for. If the person has responded well to the low-potency remedy, it may well be that one of the remedies in that low-potency combination may be just what is needed to eliminate the remaining issues. With that understanding, I am going to give a brief description of the single remedies to be found in this combination remedy.

Cherry Plum: This essence is specific for severe pain, where one feels almost unable to bear the strain. Usually, the trauma occurred a long time ago. Does not necessarily result from a physical accident or strain. Prolonged mental effort may have led to failing nerves and exhaustion, and there is great mental anguish and distress.

Red Chestnut: This Bach flower was listed under the group ‘For Those Who Have Fear’ by Bach. There is extreme physical nervousness, with tightening of the stomach from fear. The fear of this remedy is fear for the welfare of others, particularly family and friends. When someone we know has been seriously injured, there can be a serious response within our own bodies.

Ferrum phosphoricum (Iron phosphate): The person will have been nervous and sensitive before the trauma occurred. Look for vertigo and fainting, particularly at the sight of blood. The person may complain of great dizziness with everything spinning around them. Muscle weakness will always be present. Physically, this is a remedy for anemia and for fresh wounds, contusions, and sprains.

Kali iodatum: Troublesome experiences and impressions have stayed with the person for a long time, becoming the basis of many emotional symptoms that are a part of their core personality by now. The person needing this remedy is often troubled and despondent. Physical symptoms are startling at sudden noises, light-headedness, fluttering of the heart, palpitations, weak pulse, and vertigo.

Narcotinum (opium alkaloid): This remedy is interesting in that it has been extensively proven, but very few distinctive and notable symptoms were noted. Those that were seen include vertigo from the least movement of the head, confusion, no mental grasp of anything, brain fatigue, dullness of the senses, loss of consciousness, trembling, and cold sweat, with all of these symptoms leading the person toward a state of total collapse.

Zincum phosphoricum: Symptoms include nervousness, vertigo, hysteria, restlessness, repetitive movements, forgetfulness, fearfulness, anxiety, and nervousness when any event is being anticipated. Vertigo. There are claims that this remedy relieves mental depression and paralysis following strokes and other forms of cerebral congestion.

This remedy (Zinc phos), like most homeopathic remedies to some extent, is changeable. There may be seen just the opposites of symptoms usually associated with and listed for the remedy. With Zinc phos, this would include opposites such as being happy, open, and enthusiastic one moment, then becoming gloomy and discontented without warning or obvious reason. There may be laughing that turns suddenly to hysterical screaming!

Urtica Urens (Stinging Nettle)

This polychrest remedy has a wide range of severe allergic reactions in its symptom picture and is especially suited for use with bee stings and for the ill effects of eating shellfish. Unusual and noteworthy symptoms include chronic gout, joint pain, hives, itchy blisters on fingers and hands, and burning pain in the throat. Eyes feel weak and sore, pain in eyes as if from a blow, feels like sand in the eyes, and the eyes burn and sting a lot.

‘Burning sensations’ are a keynote of this remedy. Symptoms related to the kidneys include bleeding from the bladder, uric acid toxemia, kidney/ bladder disease, gravel in the kidneys, and acid urine with itching. If the kidneys are seriously compromised or cause trouble for the person, I would certainly reach for Urtica urens in a deeper potency.

Urtica urens acts on the breasts, glands, liver, spleen, and genitourinary organs. Urtica is sometimes used to stop the flow of milk when wanting to cease nursing, although Urtica can stimulate the milk supply as long as the baby is being put to the breast.

Arsenicum Album

This is a true polychrest remedy—meaning that it will prove just right for many people at many times in their lives. I still remember clearly the day—and the person—who made me aware of this remedy and brought me one!

Arsenicum is a leading polychrest—an absolutely amazing whole body remedy—for anything to do with the digestive and intestinal tracts and many other systems, including urinary, circulatory, lymphatic, and glandular. A few (very few, as this remedy is given pages and pages in Materia medicas) keynote symptoms include diarrhea, burning pain in the stomach and abdomen, rumbling and cramping pains in the bowels, violent squeezing and constriction in the umbilical region, and enlargement of the liver and the spleen.

Our most frequent use of this remedy in our family is usually for anything that manifests in the digestive tract and to improve the absorption of nutrients. Arsenicum is indicated for influenza and even poisonings from bad food and has a particular affinity for aiding the liver.
Arsenicum also acts on the nerves. A keynote of Arsenicum is sudden great weakness from trivial causes, shortness of breath, and being extremely nervous and restless. Arsenicum also strengthens the muscles (remember the heart is a muscle) and the lungs. Arsensicum is considered around the world to be a restorative for all systems of the body (digestive, urinary, circulatory, lymphatic, glandular, and muscular).

Emotionally, Arsenicum is indicated for sleeplessness from anxiety and nervous exhaustion, violent startling with twitching and trembling of limbs during sleep, and being kept awake by heartburn and shortness of breath.

I cannot leave describing this remedy without at least touching on some of the mental/emotional symptoms. Compassion for other people is a keynote. Unfortunately, this sometimes becomes anguish and anxiety. These emotions may become anger at the unfairness of the world and at “man’s inhumanity to man”. This anger and anguish may then manifest as being domineering and demanding as they seek to control the environment and the people around them. Sometimes these domineering tendencies deteriorate from trying to keep people safe and make them happy, to controlling them so as not to have anything trigger their angry feelings and outbursts.

Aconitum napellus

Aconitum illnesses are usually acute and are always sudden and violent, with high fever being common. Some other symptoms are earache, dryness and heat in the eyes, eyelids are hard, red, and swollen, and the nose is stopped up. There may be acute inflammation of the throat with high fever. The symptoms of Aconitum that apply to the flu are pressure in the stomach, burning from the stomach to the esophagus, painful hiccups, and vomiting of clear water every time one sits up.
There are several varieties of Aconitum headaches. These include congestive headaches, headaches with a very hot sensation inside the head, pulsations in the forehead, violent squeezing or bursting pain in the forehead, scalp being sensitive to touch during the headache, and scalp sensitivity to cold air and strong winds.
Mental and emotional symptoms include extreme restlessness, or anxiety and restlessness, manifesting alternatively. This is an excellent remedy for nightmares, phobias, insomnia with thrashing about, despair from pain, and panic attacks. The symptoms are usually worse at night.

Featured Blends for First Aid

Turmoil Essential Oil BlendLeTurmoil Essential Oil Blend

This amazing essential oil blend contains 15 single essential oils! This is more than a bit unusual in blending and takes a great deal of skill and understanding of the principles of blending essential oils, as well as a great deal of intuition and inspiration. Perhaps, you have gotten onto the fact that this is one of my very favorite blends. I consider it—the coming together of the blend—has a gift from a loving Heavenly Father!

LeTurmoil is a remedy I reach for when a person is feeling faint or when shock is imminent, likely, or even just a possibility. Severe trauma to the system can also weaken the immune system for the future, opening the sufferer to further deteriorations in health in the ensuing days or weeks!

This blend is useful in rebuilding the physical/emotional connection after trauma or loss, including injury to either yourself or someone you hold/held dear! LeTurmoil should be considered for the anger stage of grief and, later on in the grieving process, if the grief seems to be settling into depression.

Vallee Essential Oil BlendLeVallee Essential Oil Blend

This blend was created specifically for rebuilding skin and muscle tissue following a severe burn (and was named for my daughter. Can you guess why?) It proved essential just months later when another, even more serious burn occurred in our family. LeVallee is best used in combination with Miracle Salve for maximum healing of burns and even cuts.

The essential oils in this blend support the growth of new skin cells based on the body’s original cellular blueprint, helping to minimize scarring. It is designed to strengthen the integrity of the cell membranes and re-establish blood flow to traumatized areas. In addition, LeVallee contains oils renowned for rebuilding nerve cells and nervous system networks.

The essential oils contained in LeVallee help nourish the body on a physical level, but they also have amazing emotional properties. Unlike other organs, our skin has an immediate reaction to mental stress. Think of the last time you were embarrassed- red blotchy skin! Our skin is our most visible organ and, unfortunately, is very much linked to the state of our emotions. More than just putting our emotional health on display, perhaps we should consider that skin conditions such as dryness, redness, rashes, and eczema can be an indication that we may have some emotional issues, imbalances, or misperceptions coloring our outlook and even our physical health. LeVallee contains essential oils that help us to thrive and even repair our attitudes, if that is needed, and we are willing.

Featured Single Essential Oil

Yarrow Blue Essential OilYarrow Blue Essential Oil

Pages could be written about Yarrow essential oils. Yarrow has been one of my favorite essential oils (and herbal remedies) for years. Yarrow is one of the most versatile essential oils, having a use for nearly every body system and in many diverse situations. What is the difference between one Yarrow and another? They are all distilled from the Achillea millefolium plant. It is the distillation heat and specific process that creates the different healing effects. I like Yarrow Yellow, when I can get it, slightly better for treating fevers. Yarrow green seems to be slightly better for digestive issues.

Yarrow blue has all of the healing properties basic to yarrow in general, but is my favorite for anything to do with cuts or wounds. The dark blue colored yarrow is unbeatable in its ability to stop bleeding in cuts and wounds, as well as the well-known ability to prevent infection. Applied to even a jagged cut with ragged edges, yarrow blue will pull the edges of a cut together in an almost miraculous manner—and quickly, too!

Carrier Oil for First Aid

LN Carrier OilLN Carrier Oil

Years before we discovered the wonderful healing properties of essential oils, but were using herbal remedies on a daily basis, I put together an herb pack that both reduced pain and was very anti-inflammatory and healing. We would heat the herbs in a small amount of distilled water and then fold them into a clean cotton cloth. This cloth would be applied to whatever part of a family member’s anatomy that had just been smashed, smooshed, crushed, or otherwise done something drastic to. This was very effective!
A story, here, for just a short moment. My father-in-law, one day, had a run-in with a rather wild horse. The horse smashed him up, several times, into a large post. He was bruised on every side, front and back!. I made several large poultices using the same herbs as are now in the LN oil and applied them up and down one side. I insisted that it sit there with the poultices on for a couple of hours. Then I removed them. I intended to put them all down on his other side. He insisted he had been sufficiently ‘treated’ and refused to let me administer any more ‘nonsense’, as he put it! The next morning, he could barely move. Why? Because the side we had not poulticed was so badly bruised and swollen that he could not move any joint at all. The other side? Perfectly normal-looking and quite capable of doing whatever it wanted to be doing!

LN contains the herbs Comfrey, Arnica, St.John’s Wort, Lobelia, Calendula, Angelica, Valerian, Ginger, and Cayenne. A quick study of each of these herbs will show clearly that there is something for every part of the body—bones, muscles, tendons, joints, etc.

Using LN Oil as a carrier oil topically for injuries would be especially effective when coupling it with essential oils such as LeDeeper, LeFortitude, LeIntensity, LePaine, LePatches, LeTendaCare, and LeWarmDown. LN is available from Butterfly Express LLC as a carrier oil, or it is available as an herb pack from which you can make your own liniment.
