May – Pain Management

As I have said often and with emphasis over many years, “All drugs have side effects!”

As an introduction to this section on Alternative Pain Management, I am including parts of an “FDA Drug Safety Communication” issued on July 9, 2015. If you wish to read the entire communication (with pages of additional information for patients and consumers and even more information for Health Care Professionals along with a comprehensive Data Summary) I am providing the link to the FDA announcement itself on the U.S Food & Drug Administration’s web page.
This statement certainly is true of the drugs used for pain management, as is illustrated by these statements taken from the FDA website itself. The use of herbs, essential oils, and Blessed Water or Homeopathic remedies is an effective and safe way to manage pain.

The double-indented paragraphs below are taken directly from the FDA web page. Bold italics, in order to emphasize specific points are my addition.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is strengthening an existing label warning that non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Based on our comprehensive review of new safety information, we are requiring updates to the drug labels of all prescription NSAIDs.

Patients taking NSAIDs should seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or trouble breathing, weakness in one part or side of their body, or slurred speech.

NSAIDs are widely used to treat pain and fever from many different long- and short-term medical conditions such as arthritis, menstrual cramps, headaches, colds, and the flu. NSAIDs are available by prescription and OTC. Examples of NSAIDs include ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and celecoxib (see Table 1 for a list of NSAIDs).

(Table 1 also informs us that “There are many over-the-counter (OTC) products that contain this medicine” referring to NSAIDs that are easily available without a doctor’s prescription but are just as dangerous.)

The risk of heart attack and stroke with NSAIDs, either of which can lead to death, was first described in 2005 in the Boxed Warning and Warnings and Precautions sections of the prescription drug labels. Since then, we have reviewed a variety of new safety information on prescription and OTC NSAIDs, including observational studies, a large combined analysis of clinical trials, and other scientific publications.

Based on our review and the advisory committees’ recommendations, the prescription NSAID labels will be revised to reflect the following information:

    • The risk of heart attack or stroke can occur as early as the first weeks of using an NSAID. The risk may increase with longer use of the NSAID. The risk appears greater at higher doses.
    • NSAIDs can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients with or without heart disease or risk factors for heart disease. A large number of studies support this finding, with varying estimates of how much the risk is increased, depending on the drugs and the doses studied
    • In general, patients with heart disease or risk factors for it have a greater likelihood of heart attack or stroke following NSAID use than patients without these risk factors because they have a higher risk at baseline.
    • Patients treated with NSAIDs following a first heart attack were more likely to die in the first year after the heart attack compared to patients who were not treated with NSAIDs after their first heart attack.
    • There is an increased risk of heart failure with NSAID use.

We will request similar updates to the existing heart attack and stroke risk information in the Drug Facts labels of OTC non-aspirin NSAIDs.

Patients and health care professionals should remain alert for heart-related side effects the entire time that NSAIDs are being taken.

Additional information for Patients and Consumers

Non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke, either of which can lead to death. There are a large number of studies that support this finding, with varying estimates of how much the risk is increased, depending on the drugs and the doses studied. These serious side effects can occur as early as the first weeks of using an NSAID and the risk may increase the longer you are taking an NSAID.
The risk appears greater at higher doses; use the lowest effective amount for the shortest possible time.
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms such as:

    • Chest pain
    • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
    • Sudden weakness or numbness in one part or side of the body
    • Sudden slurred speech
    • Many medicines contain NSAIDs, including those used for colds, flu, and sleep, so it is important to read the labels and avoid taking multiple medicines that contain NSAIDs.
    • Patients who take low-dose aspirin for protection against heart attack and stroke should know that some NSAIDs, including those in over-the-counter (OTC) products such as ibuprofen and naproxen, can interfere with that protective effect.
    • Read the patient Medication Guide you receive with your NSAID prescription. It explains the risks associated with the use of the medicine. You may access Medication Guides by clicking on this link.
    • Read the Drug Facts label before taking an OTC NSAID. Talk to your health care professional or pharmacist if you have questions or concerns about NSAIDs or which medicines contain them.

New Safflower Carrier Oil

Safflower Carrier Oil

Safflower oil is rich in oleic and linoleic acids. Claims are made that these two essential fatty acids can work wonders for skin and hair. Safflower oil is used to nourish and hydrate the skin, leaving it feeling soft and supple. As a carrier oil for pain-relieving essential oil blends, safflower has its own anti-inflammatory properties, making it especially helpful for situations where both pain and inflammation are being treated.

Safflower oil, applied to the skin, goes on very lightly and works for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Additionally, it absorbs into the skin very quickly, making it less likely to stain clothing if you are not patient about putting clothing back on over the area where it was applied.

Safflower and hair? The linoleic fatty acids contained in Safflower oil help to seal the hair cuticle, thus preventing moisture loss. Safflower oil also soothes and moisturizes a dry, itchy scalp. Apply safflower oil to the scalp and hair roots as a pre-shampoo treatment. Leave it on as long as you can manage to wait patiently (in a relaxing, soaking tub with a pleasant and helpful essential oil added), and then wash it out.

BBL & EO Special

BBL & EO Special

Long, long ago, when the first of my children were very young, a new doctor in town thanked me for keeping his children fed by bringing my boys in so often because of ear infections. This annoyed me greatly, as you might imagine. I began serious research into herbal answers for ear infections! My discoveries led me to both garlic and mullein oil. Eventually, the oil used in our family expanded to include the wonderful benefits of usnea, a lichen that grows in pine trees. This herb is renowned for anything bacterial or viral. White Willow was added as an additional pain reliever.

A couple of drops of BBL tincture, warmed a bit, and added on top of the few drops of EO placed in the ear, both fight infection and relieve pain. These things that I learned, way back then (40 plus years ago), have worked very well for my family every time. People have even reported that this protocol, followed for several weeks even without an existing ear infection, has greatly improved their hearing by dissolving the wax build-up that has accumulated over the years! Nobody in this family, that I know of, has visited a doctor for an ear infection in years!

Super Omega 3-6-9 Supplement

Super Omega 3-6-9

This fantastic blend is comprised of well-known nutritional oils. It has a unique and very effective balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids. It also contains some Omega-9 Fatty Acids. While the body can produce a certain amount of Omega-9s, the body cannot produce Omega-3 or Omega-6.

However, they are essential to good health and wellness. These nutrients must be obtained from food. For most of us, this is simply not happening most days. A good supplement can make all the difference in the way we feel both physically and on mental and emotional levels. I suspect, from my own experience, that having sufficient of these nutrients affects even the way I behave in my relationships with those around me—family and friends.

Omega-3s assist every cell in your body. They are a vital part of your cell membranes, providing structure and supporting interactions between your cells. These nutrients are especially concentrated in the cells of our eyes and brains. Omega-6 fatty acids are also essential to cell structure and integrity. Additionally, they have anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-9 fatty acids also reduce inflammation and help our bodies achieve better insulin sensitivity.

Essential Oils for Pain Management

Many essential oils are anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving! Blended just right into a blend that covers many conditions and types of pain, essential oils are absolutely amazing! I created several such blends in my day, using various combinations and eliminating certain single oils for certain people in a blend especially made for them.
For example, my mother always had difficulty being in the outdoors because of allergic reactions to conifer trees. It was a simple task for me to create a pain-relieving blend for her without using a conifer oil. (By the way, that blend was LePaine, which is discussed below.)

Deeper Essential Oil Blend

Of all the blends that I created in the early days and all the blends that have been created since Butterfly’s available single oil line has expanded so greatly over the years, LeDeeper is still my favorite when I am hurting!

I would like to share with you some comments made on the ButterflyExpress.shop website by happy customers:

This oil has been amazing on wasp stings. After several months of lingering pain and inflammation on my finger, I applied this and the pain went away in a few hours and has stayed away. It has been a lifesaver for so many other things. One of my favorite oils so far!   – Jenessa

This essential oil is truly amazing! I can’t live without it! It is without a doubt the oil that I use the most. I use it for headaches, menstrual cramps, muscle pain and lower back pain. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning I can’t turn my head because my neck muscles are so tense and painful. But when I apply LeDeeper, I can move my head freely within an hour!   – Angelica

I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet. At times the pain keeps me awake at night. I use LeDeeper on my feet and it soothes the pain so I can sleep.   – Robin

LeDeeper has changed the way we handle aches and pains! We use deeper in the bath to soak the soreness away, rub it on sore muscles during dance competitions, on my joints for my RA, and on any other muscle soreness issues. It has been a lifesaver for my daughters menstrual cramps as well! I can’t say enough good about this oil…except to say…GET SOME!   – Ronni

There are so many more comments just like these, and I could go on and on about my own experiences with this blend. This blend was ‘tweaked’ just a little bit over the years as my kids managed to damage themselves in one way or another. In my opinion, it is one of the most perfect and synergistically balanced blends I have ever created.

Intensity Essential Oil Blend

LeIntensity contains just a little smidgen-bit of Capsicum (Cayenne) essential oil. Personally, I was just a little concerned that the capsicum would make this blend a bit too ‘hot’. However, it has proven to be very helpful to so many people and is, by far, my husband’s favorite anti-inflammatory/pain-relieving blend available to him. This wonderful blend has proven especially useful for arthritis and connective tissue injuries.

I love this blend for the way it clears my mind and improves my mood, whether applied topically or diffused in my vicinity!

A word of caution: While okay for use in the bathtub, a couple of drops is all you want at one time! LeIntensity is also available in a rub (discussed below). Use in a rub eliminates even the slight tingle that may occur at first when you apply LeIntensity to the skin (due to the capsicum contained in it). The aroma is rather mild and doesn’t scream ‘This person is in pain!’ nor does it fill the air around the person wearing it with an overpowering aroma.

The list of ingredients is impressive! There is an oil for just about anything pain or inflammation-related. Some are very intense essential oils, and others are far more delicate and gentle in nature. It takes a very good essential oil blend creator to create a blend from such a variety of essential oils. Way to go, Butterfly Express staffer! I wish I could say that I accomplished this miracle. Actually, I am happy to ‘pass the baton’ to such a talent!

Paine Essential Oil Blend

LePaine is so much more than an analgesic agent! This delightful blend promotes rapid healing because it brings oxygen—and, therefore, healing nutrients—to the injured or tight muscles as it increases circulation. Just as importantly, the emotional and mental healing aspects of this blend are phenomenal!

The aroma of this blend is like a breath of fresh air to the mind. I diffuse it (or wear it on me somewhere) when my mind needs waking up on a project or my mood needs improving! This blend is particularly suited in helping a person find stability at those times when we are experiencing emotional highs followed by sadness and depression. We all have blessings to count, but sometimes the difficult aspects and losses of life can bring us down a bit. The LePaine blend, while relieving physical pain, has often helped me through difficult emotional periods also.

Butterfly Express, LLC. customer comments (just a couple of them):

I had a hip replaced at the ripe old age of 40! I was severely allergic to pain medication. This oil and LeDeeper were the only things I had to get me through. So glad I had them.   – H

I love LePaine and I love the smell of it. I rub LePaine wherever I am hurting. It takes the pain away. I have used LeWarmDown in combination with LePaine. The two together helps heal the pain and inflammation.    – Sondra  (Additional comment by LaRee—LeWarmDown is an excellent blend for tight muscles and muscle issues of almost any kind.)

Arborvitae Essential Oil

Here is a little bit of word history that I find fascinating. The cerebrum of the brain is made up of white matter that has a branched, tree-like appearance. This section of the brain is called the arbor vitae which, in Latin, translates to “tree of life”. These branches bring sensory and motor information to and from the cerebellum section of the brain. The ‘scientific’ name for the arborvitae is Thuja.

Arborvitae essential oil is made from white-cedar trees. These trees can grow up to 230 feet tall with corresponding roots anchoring them to the ground! Like the trees themselves, arborvitae essential oil brings stability to our lives and our health, emotionally and physically! We, too, can stand firmly rooted in ourselves, reach the heights of our ambitions and callings, and be strong enough and resilient enough to bend and weather life’s challenges and difficult moments. All this and pain relief and the reduction of inflammation, as well!

Marjoram Essential Oil

Marjoram has an affinity for the respiratory system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, reproductive areas, solar plexus chakra, governing vessel meridian, stomach and spleen meridians, and yang energy. Its therapeutic properties include antispasmodic, arterial vasodilator, expectorant, digestive, analgesic, calming, sedative, antitussive, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-infective, diuretic, and emmenagogue. As with Rosemary, discussed below, this is an impressively comprehensive list and illustrates the medicinal and healing value of the herbs and spices Heaven has provided for our well-being on this earth.

The analgesic properties of Marjoram make it an appropriate choice for muscle aches, sprains, strains, and arthritis. Marjoram essential oil helps bruising to clear and fade more quickly. Marjoram increases the dilation of blood vessels, which aid in lowering blood pressure and easing heart palpitations. This essential oil, more concentrated than the herb alone, can ease headaches that are caused by muscle tension or lack of circulation.

Rosemary Camphor Essential Oil

Plants often vary in natural constituents and chemical composition depending on the environment or geographical location in which they are grown and even on weather conditions from one growing season to another. These different varieties of the same plant are called chemotypes. ButterflyExpress carries two Rosemary chemotypes. These are Rosemary Cineole, and Rosemary Camphor.

Both Rosemary essential oils have much in common and can generally be used fairly interchangeably. However, the higher camphor content of Rosemary camphor makes it especially beneficial for relieving aches and pains, muscle cramps, and joint pain as it increases circulation and provides anti-inflammatory properties.

Just one aspect reminds us that Rosemary, mentally, fosters an inquisitive spirit, sending us out in all directions looking for light, understanding and the best solution to whatever needs doing or fixing today.

Physically, Rosemary has an affinity for the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, urinary system, skin, liver, solar plexus chakra, liver meridian, small intestine meridian, heart meridian, yang energy, and balances heart function and strengthens the solar plexus. The organs and energy systems listed here give us some idea of the versatility of this oil (and herb)! Every system listed impacts other body systems until Rosemary’s influence resonates throughout the entire system, lending strength and health wherever it goes.

I strongly recommend that you visit ButterflyExpress.shop and read the lengthy list of physical and mental/emotional properties of Rosemary essential oils. This is a very impressive essential oil!

Featured Herbs for Pain Management

Herbs for Pain Management

Featured Herbs for Pain Management

The first four tinctures discussed in this section are nervine formulas. Nervine herbs are anodyne (meaning they relieve pain), antispasmodic (relieve muscle cramps), and anti-inflammatory. They are used to calm, heal, and strengthen nerves as well as to alleviate depression. Nervine formulas make excellent pain relievers

Nervine herbs are not generally narcotic, at least not the ones that I have used in these formulas. They do not make you feel groggy or disconnected in any way. Although they can help you relax into sleep, they do not present a problem for driving or operating machinery.
When any type of nerve problem exists, careful attention should be paid to the diet. Adding mineral supplements such as KNA, BHM, or MIN is recommended. Also use essential oils, as appropriate. There are many good ones for pain relief, some of which are discussed in this article.
Herbs are plant material. As such, it is theoretically possible to find someone who has reacted to every one of them, although reactions are actually quite rare. Unpleasant reactions to nervine herbs are a little bit more common than with other herbs. For this reason, there are 3 different Nervine formulas at Butterfly. Four, if you count that marvelous BBL formula.
Each of these tincture formulas are also available at Butterfly in a dry herb pack. This enables you to make your own tincture, or even a pain-relieving pack, at home.
Which of the formulas is the best choice at which times in our lives? Let me try to help with that question from my experience with these various formulas.

BBL

BBL has so many uses, and is so amazing, that the best I can do here is provide a sampling of the things that I use it for nearly every day. First, as mentioned above, is pain relief with ear infections. BBL, for pain relief in many other ways, is often reached for in our household and business facilities. I remember dropping a gallon can of something or other on the top of my foot one Saturday afternoon. I soaked my foot in water to which I had added 3 or 4 dropperfuls of BBL. The pain went away, of course. The next day, I put on a pair of dressy shoes to wear to church. They had tight elastic bands criss-crossing over the top of ‘injured’ foot. No pain whatsoever! None! I have had the same experiences with fingers and toes!

I smashed the index finger on my right hand thoroughly one day, and the pain was excruciating. I put Arnica oil on it—for the swelling. I poured some BBL tincture into a small paper cup and put my finger in it. The pain was manageable that way, and within a few hours, most of the discoloration, swelling, and pain were gone.

BBL is very anti-spasmodic. In simple terms, this means that it will provide relief from anything that manifests with spasms, pulsating, or cramping qualities. Absolutely anything! This effect is accomplished with ingesting the tincture as well as when using it as a liniment or a soak! We learned, long ago, that BBL added to a bath relieves fever and the body aches that often accompany illness and fever. BBL is the first thing I reach for, even with all the essential oils that I possess, for a toothache.

My most frequent use of BBL, however, is helping me achieve a sound night’s sleep. I keep a small paper cup and a bottle of BBL tincture in the bathroom near my bedroom for those nights when sleep seems to be eluding me.

NV

NV (formerly Nervine Formula) is the first, the strongest, and most complete of the nervine formulas that I have created and which are available at Butterfly. As stated above, nervine herbs are all pain-relieving to one degree or another. They are also antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory. Some of the strongest of these are found in this formula.

One of these strong herbs is Valerian. Valerian was known as ‘Heal-All’ in the Middle Ages and is still referred to by that name in older herbal texts. This is one of the best herbs known for assisting a person in coping with high levels of stress and sleeplessness! However, there are known opposing reactions to Valerian. Occasionally, a person taking Valerian becomes quite agitated. Not in any way that damages nerves or overall health, that is known of at this time. Just super-active, unable to sit still or concentrate on any one thing for very long. The reaction lasts only a little while. Herbal texts will tell you this reaction is only seen with the dried herb. However, the only such reaction I have ever seen was when I was wild-crafting. In other words, the reaction was with Valerian harvested in the wild, very fresh, and only recently cut. A little bit of lavender in a relaxing bath calmed things right down in minutes.

NS

NS represents the designation Nerve Special. This is the formula, of the three adult formulas discussed here, that I reach for most often myself. It contains slightly milder herbs—and no Valerian—than those in NV. These herbs are, in my long experience with this formula, just as effective (or nearly so) as those in the NV formula. NS can be mixed with a little bit of St. John’s Wort for extra help with anxiety attacks or sleeplessness. If you wish to do this, simply add 0.25 part of St. John’s Wort to the recipe. Or, even just add a few drops of St. John’s Wort tincture to your NS tincture.

NT

NT, which stands for Nerve Tonic, is comprised of the mildest of nervine herbs. This includes such wonderful calming herbs as oatstraw, passion flower, lavender, and lemon balm. St. John’s Wort is also included, and Rosemary, which was discussed above. Once again, milder does not necessarily mean less effective. It only indicates that it is more commonly used for different sorts of nervous system issues.

I consider NT more of a remedy for gradually building nervous system strength by providing important nutrients to the nervous system. I love NT for the management of emotional/mental strain rather than for the relief of muscle or joint pain, although it is quite effective there.

NVC

The designation ‘NVC’ indicates that this nervine formula is made with children in mind. The herbs in this formula have been used for generations with children. This formula, unlike the other three, is always made with glycerin, rather than using alcohol as a base. NVC is mild enough to be given as often as every 15 minutes for the first three or four doses.

This remedy is especially helpful when a baby is fretful with colic or when teething is proving difficult for a child.

NVC stimulates the body’s defenses when colds, flus, fevers, and other acute illnesses are just setting in. I used this formula in conjunction with CC (Children’s Composition) with my own children at the onset of any illness. It was tremendously and consistently effective every time!

If your child (or grandchild) startles awake during naps or during the night, this formula, which contains catnip and chamomile—discussed below—puts an end to that scary phenomenon immediately with regular application before nap time or bedtime. Passion Flower and Peppermint (in an appropriate small quantity) are included in this mix. (Peppermint, in low doses, is relaxing rather than stimulating and is an important part of why this remedy works so well!)

Catnip/Chamomile

This formula, like NVC, is made as a glycerite because it is so often used with colicky, cranky, or teething infants. The catnip component both soothes nerves and relieves tummy troubles such as gas, bloating, and colic. As you may have surmised, the NVC formula began with the use of these two herbs together then was expanded with two other of my favorite mild nervine herbs.

PN

This is a very unique formula! First, it contains Valerian. While valerian is one of my favorite herbs and one which I often add to formulas to increase their effectiveness, it should be used with caution—at least at first—with small children as explained above in the description of NV.

Wild Lettuce, less well-known as a pain reliever than other herbs, is also included. I love wild lettuce as a pain reliever! The sedative properties of wild lettuce may be used to quiet a cough, but care should be taken to quiet only dry, unproductive coughs. Wild lettuce is so effective at quieting spasmodic coughs that it should not be used to quiet a cough that is expelling phlegm that needs to be gotten out of the body.

St. John’s Wort is added for reasons beyond its nerve-calming capabilities. St. John’s Wort seems to act against encapsulated viruses. Virus strains that this amazing herb tested as effective against included HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Truly an amazing herb!

Cayenne, just a pinch, is added to increase circulation and to aid the healing benefits of the other herbs in reaching the appropriate areas of the body and mind more quickly and efficiently.

Homeopathic Remedies for Pain Management

Homeopathic Remedies for Pain ManagementFeatured Blessed Waters for Pain Management

First, a reminder that Blessed Waters are similar to homeopathic remedies in use and effectiveness.

Once again, as with the Nervine formulas described above, my goal with the next four remedy descriptions (Muscular Aches and Pain #1 and #2 and Pain Remedy #1 and #2) is to help you decide which one to use in which sort of situation. To do so most effectively, I am going to describe, briefly, Muscle Aches and Pains #2 first and then cover the more comprehensive Muscle Aches #1 formula.

As with all low-potency combination remedies, if something works for you consider using just the most appropriate to your pain remedy in a higher potency for relief and healing that runs even deeper.

Muscular Aches & Pains #2

This formula is comprised of only three Blessed Water remedies. The first two are remedies made from two of the nervine herbs mentioned above in the descriptions of nervine herbal formulas. These are Valerian (Valeriana officinallis) and Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata).

Passion Flower, while extremely mild as a nervine herb, is deservedly well-known as a Blessed Water/Homeopathic Remedy for relief of nervous system issues such as worry, insomnia in persons of all ages, teething difficulties, and convulsions in children. As with all energetic remedies, however, the healing aspects range throughout the entire system. Body systems that will likely respond to this remedy include the eyes, back, coccys, head, legs, lungs, stomach, and skin.

The descriptions of symptoms relieved by Valerian in homeopathic form run to three pages in my Materia Medica. They cover a wide range of physical and mental symptoms. Common to all of these symptoms is that both, mentally and physically, the symptoms change suddenly and run to extremes when present! Put simply, the person who will respond well and quickly to Valerian in BlessedWater/Homeopathic dosage will be of “changeable disposition and moods”, at least during stressful situations and illnesses. Irritability is another keynote of this remedy.

The third ingredient, Magnesia Carbonica, is—as the name implies—an energetic version of much-needed-by-the-body-and-mind minerals. It is particularly calming to the nerves that control various muscle groups of the body. This includes bruised pain in the back that occurs during the night and heavy tired, painful legs and feet during the day!

Muscular Aches & Pains #1

This is a more complicated and comprehensive remedy than even the effective one (#2) just discussed above. Key to the blessings of this remedy is Arnica Montana. Arnica is the leading polycrest remedy for all things connected to trauma and its effects, recent or long in the past. Of particular note with Arnica is its well-known effect on bruised tissues, including (or better said, especially) on muscles.

Each of the other four remedies included in this formula target the nerves and muscles of specific areas of the body. Bryonia alba—back issues and injuries. Symptoms are worse from motion and better for lying on the painful area! (How unique and strange is that!) Cimicifuga racemosa—nerve pain in the lower back pelvis, hips, and thighs. Rhus toxicodendron—the spinal cord which, of course, can extend along nerves to anywhere in the body! Ruta gravolens—injured joints and bruised bones. Last, Magnesia phosphorica—symptoms include cramping of muscles with radiating, neuralgic pain. The pain is made more difficult due to the person experiencing over-sensitivity to the pain accompanied by great anxiety.

Pain Remedy #1

The key areas to be relaxed and calmed by this remedy is the spine—including the sacrum—, the neck, and the head. Symptoms in the head include eye pain. Spinal symptoms extend out to the legs with pain in the fingers, toes, heels, and Achilles tendon. One ingredient in this formula targets such intense shooting pains in the sacrum and coccyx that sitting is nearly impossible. Shooting pains throughout the body become nearly intolerable.

Pain Remedy #2

This combination remedy, a total of 7 single remedies, includes a wide variety of symptoms! These include—to name just a few!—pain from bone diseases, arthritis, dislocated joints, back injuries, and tightness of muscles creating bone pain. With each remedy, the pain being experienced is described as pulsating, hammering, or shooting. One remedy, Kalmia latifolia, includes shooting pains to the heart!

One remedy, Lithium benzoicum, is not a pain reliever. It acts on the kidneys, thus relieving deep-seated pains in the small of the back which are the result of gallstones and kidney stones. If I were experiencing gallstones and kidney stones (which I have done in the distant past!), I would use this remedy as a single remedy in a higher potency!

Rubs for Pain Management

Rubs for Pain ManagementRubs

When Rubs and Lotions were first proposed at Butterfly Express, LLC, I was a bit vocal in my opposition to them. My thinking was that the carrier-type oils necessary in their production might limit the strength and healing properties of the final product. Then I considered the herbal salves that I had made and loved and found so useful in dire situations like very deep burns and infected wounds. I am so glad that I reconsidered! The rubs (and the lotions) are amazing and are a part of everyday life in my home and workplace!

These all-natural rubs are very strong. They are made with essential oils and LN Carrier Oil, which is almond oil infused with herbs specific to the relief of pain from injuries, bruising, and inflammation.

Menthol crystals are included for their analgesic and cooling effects. They are anesthetic, anodyne (pain-relieving), antipruritic (an agent that relieves itching), analgesic, antispasmodic and have anti-irritant qualities. They are used for pain relief and things like sprains, sore or pulled muscles, muscle spasms and cramping, and minor aches and pains of any sort.

(Please see the description of LeIntensity as an essential oil blend at the very beginning of the article!)

LeDeeper Rub

LeDeeper, both the essential oil blend and the rub, is specially formulated to increase blood and circulation in the arteries. Arteries in which blood pumps throughout the body lie deeply and safely further away from the surface of the body (where injuries are more likely to occur) than do veins.

If you use and love the LeDeeper Essential Oil blend—and everyone I know who has tried it does!—you will also enjoy this rub. LeDeeper, as a rub or an essential oil, is an effective choice for such conditions as neuropathy, bursitis, and fibromyalgia.

LeDeeper is the most effective remedy that I know of for the pain of shingles. In a rub, it is very convenient to apply, frequently and over large areas of the body!

LeIntensity Rub

I love the LeIntensity Blend as a rub! It tones down any tendency of the blend itself very nicely with the ingredients that make it a rub! LeIntensity, in the form of a rub, is just as effective for pain management, muscle relaxation, re-establishing blood supplies to tissues, reducing inflammation, and promoting healing as the LeIntensity Blend diluted with a single carrier oil. In the rub, the benefits of some wonderful herbs infused in that world-class healer, Mullein, is also present to be experienced and benefited from!

LePaine Rub

LePaine is much more than a pain reliever, although it is strongly analgesic. LePaine works predominantly because it promotes quicker healing by increasing circulation, thus bringing oxygen and nutrients to the injured area. LePaine is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and calming to nerves. This essential oil blend can be used for sciatica, bone pain, arthritis, sports injuries, muscle spasms, torn ligaments, headaches, osteoporosis, bone spurs, bursitis, back pain, and bruising.

Uniquely and wonderfully, LePaine is useful and effective as a respiratory blend.

Essential Oil Blend for Pain Management

Fortitude Essential Oil BlendLeFortitude Essential Oil Blend

LeFortitude is a ‘blend of previously blended’ essential oils. This is a fascinating way to create a very potent, healing blend. With the LeFortitude blend, four of Butterfly’s favorite and very potent analgesic and muscle relaxing/ supportive blends were combined with LeTranquility. LeTranquility is, of course, a very powerful blend for the relief of even such deep emotional things as panic attacks, the trauma created by serious injury, and migraine headaches of nearly every variety.

LeFortitude is beneficial for arthritis, sore or torn muscles, bruising, nerve damage, flbromyalgia, the pain of osteoporosis, headaches, including some migraines, sprains, the pain of broken bones, sciatica, and any other inflammatory condition that manifests with pain. Dilute well, as you should with most, if not all, essential oils when applying to the skin.

Like the LePaine blend discussed above, the CPSC requires a child-resistant cap on consumer products that contain Birch. Butterfly Express has gone to great lengths to satisfy this government bureau while causing the least amount of inconvenience to customers. Butterfly appreciates your patience and understanding!

Single Essential Oil for Pain Management

Hemp Essential OilHemp Essential Oil

Hemp essential oil, steam-distilled as it is, contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. These Omegas offer potential and verifiable anti-inflammatory properties. Analgesic inflammation, of course, plays a part in the pain of injuries and of chronic conditions such as arthritis and so many others. Inflammation plays a part in the pain being experienced in any part of the body that is muscular in nature whenever an injury occurs.

The heart is a muscle, of course, as is the large intestine. Like all muscles, inflammation can cause great havoc and various levels of pain.  Hemp essential oil can be beneficial for all sorts of inflammatory conditions including Chrohn’s disease and even asthma.

Hemp essential oil is very relaxing and is used as a sedative to treat insomnia and to improve the quality and depth of sleep. Meets all government standards and is perfectly legal to possess and use.

Carrier Oil for Pain Management

Hemp Seed Carrier OilHemp Seed Carrier Oil

Hemp Seed Carrier Oil contains 75% to 80% of essential fatty acids. Hemp is also high in Omega 3’s. These components, along with small bits of some other very emollient and lubricating fatty acids make Hemp Seed as a carrier oil very special. And, just to really round out the beneficial effects of this carrier oil, Hemp also contains Vitamin E. Tests and studies have shown that there are little to no cannabinoids present in the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp Seed oil is closely regulated during production and does not contain either CBD or THC.

Hemp Seed, as a carrier oil, makes an outstanding carrier oil for use with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving (analgesic) essential oils. This carrier can be expected to do an excellent job with conditions such as dry, rough skin, minor skin abrasions, eczema, psoriasis and even acne.
