February is one of the hardest times of the year for many people, myself included. Depression and other mental challenges are often worse at this time of year. As a result, it is particularly important for each of us to give some focus to Boosting Mental Health. It is important to make sure we are giving ourselves, and those we care for, the nutrients necessary and the emotional support that will help us through the sometimes dismal days of winter. Essential oils, herbs, and homeopathics can do so much for each of us in these areas. I am frequently grateful for my herbal upbringing, particularly at this time of year and during times of these types of struggles.

February is often a hard time of year for wintertime depression. LeBeMine is blended with the intent to help you see that spring is just around the corner and you have support from all of nature’s wonderful remedies. It is an excellent blend to diffuse to help set a loving, positive, and hopeful atmosphere in your home. This awesome blend also promotes feelings of love and gratitude for our partners, making it a great oil to add to those special moments with your own Valentine.
LeBeMine also supports the immune system and “melts” away blockages in the lungs, lymphatic vessels, and intestines. It helps us to establish more stable emotions while promoting cell regeneration throughout our bodies. The synergy of this blend can help to balance the hormones and remove free radicals from the body.
BT (formerly Brain Therapy) was formulated to help kids and adults with ADHD, anxiety, and general brain fog. It contains herbs known to improve overall brain health.
The herbs that comprise this blend are also useful for promoting circulation and blood flow to the brain, thus supplying the brain with more oxygen. BT is excellent for helping to maintain focus, boost memory, and increase alertness. It can also improve one’s mood and emotional stability. BT helps to reduce fatigue, stimulates the immune system, and eases depression.
Several of the herbs in this formula are noted for their ability to help reduce stress, calm nervous tension, and ease anxiety-making it excellent for stressful events such as tests or exams. BT will gently nourish the nerves and often reduces headache pain. Taking BT regularly may help to prevent headaches from occurring.
This tincture is appropriate as a daily long-term supplement, as it helps to strengthen the tiny vessels and capillaries in brain tissue. Several of the herbs contained in this blend are excellent at extending mental clarity into old age. Unlike some traditional ADHD treatments, BT will not cause afternoon energy crashes, stomach aches, or sleep disruptions. BT is sugar-free and caffeine-free.
The tincture is the most convenient way to take these herbs regularly but nothing beats a nice cup of herbal tea with honey and/or lemon. Taking the time to drink a nice cup of tea and relax can be a great way to boost mental health.
Rosehips have extremely high levels of vitamins, particularly vitamin C. Other nutrients include vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, and K as well as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, choline, betaine, and the minerals, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, and fluoride. The nutrients in Rosehips are in an extremely absorbable form.
Rosehips are a gentle remedy for diarrhea and they are mildly diuretic. In addition, Rosehips reduce thirst and alleviate gastric inflammation. In folk remedies in the early years in America, Rosehips were considered a remedy for chest problems.
Iron needs vitamin C to be absorbed; take vitamin C during pregnancy and at other times when the absorption of additional iron is needed. Vitamin C also supports and enhances immune system function. I add Rosehips to my daily regime most of the time but particularly when I am trying to increase my mineral uptake.
These February specials were chosen because they are amazing for Boosting Mental Health.

Daffodil helps to quiet the mind and body allowing us to take a deep breath and center ourselves. With an affinity for sedating the organs of the body, Daffodil reminds us to slow down and allow for fun and spontaneity in our lives. It boosts our confidence, giving us personal power to break free from the stresses of life, and just enjoy where we are at that moment.
Howood is emotionally uplifting to the mind. It promotes alertness and clarity but is relaxing and refreshing at the same time.
Howood can prepare our minds and spirits for emotional, spiritual, and energy healing work. It calms the nerves and is an antidepressant.
Howood is a cellular stimulant and regenerator (cytophylactic), much as is Helichrysum. This makes Howood a very valuable oil, especially for the price. Because it has an exceptionally high linalool content, it is thought to be very nourishing and supportive of the immune system. It should be used routinely as part of any preventative health care regimen.
Howood is an excellent oil for reducing inflammation, spasms, and pain in muscles and joints. It can be very useful for injuries or arthritis.
Rose Geranium is an excellent choice for those who feel burdened by, or resentful of, the necessity to work so very hard. This situation may be a perception or it may be reality. Rose Geranium is a call to attention. It requires us to analyze our lives, streamline them if necessary, and then enables us to do with joy those things that are required of us. Rose Geranium soothes the nervous system. It relieves depression and anxiety, making the world look like a much friendlier and supportive place.
Rose Geranium can benefit those who have found themselves in a position where what seems to be never-ending work with no rest, no pause, and maybe even with very little reward is necessary at the present time. This beautiful oil also stimulates the lymphatic system, thereby relieving congestion and pain throughout the body. As the body detoxifies, symptoms of PMS such as water retention, bloating, and headache disappear.
Citrus oils are often referred to as ‘Sunshine Oils’. Descriptions of the emotional pattern of citrus oils will mention creating feelings of happiness. This collection includes 16 oils. Some of them-orange, lemon, and grapefruit-are obvious. Others-petitgrain and neroli-might surprise you. Petigrain oil is derived from the bark of a citrus tree so, technically, it is a wood oil rather than a citrus. The emotional picture, however, places it firmly in this citrus sunshine category.
Because of the way citrus oils are extracted, these oils have larger molecules than most other essential oils. These molecules are more sensitive to light and air and break down faster. As a result, these oils must be cared for carefully if they are to remain potent and effective over time. Some essential oils like Frankincense improve as they age but this is not true of citrus oils. The good news is that citrus oils are very cheap to produce and tend to be very inexpensive. Fortunately, when placed in blends that contain ‘wood’ or ‘oleoresin’ oils, the aroma and benefits of citrus oils can last for years!
Cats tend to not like citrus oils and if you are a pet lover you will want to avoid diffusing them without leaving them a place to retreat to that is not so citrusy.
One of the most popular ways to use citrus oils is for cleaning so I wanted to include this link.
I would love to tell you lots and lots about all of these oils but that would make this blog very long. As a result, each description below is quite short. Please, if you want further information, click on the links in each description to read more about each one.
All of the Orange oils have similar therapeutic properties and can be used interchangeably. Orange Blood, Orange Sweet, and Orange Sweet Dark are all from the Citrus sinensis plant. Orange Sweet is the most common and the most inexpensive orange oil. The aroma of Orange Blood is both a bit brighter and a bit more tart than Orange Sweet. Orange Sweet Dark differs from Orange Sweet only slightly. Sweet Dark is derived from only the first pressing of the peels while Orange Sweet is derived by pressing the peels more than once. Being the ‘first press’ gives Sweet Dark a slightly deeper aroma. Orange Bitter is derived from Citrus aurantium. This is the same tree from which Neroli and Petitgrain are processed. It smells very similar to Orange Sweet but has an underlying touch of tart bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit oil.
An orange essential oil brings peace and happiness to the mind and body and joy to the heart. They provide emotional support, helping a person to overcome sadness and find the courage to move on from emotional and physical abuse. These oils reestablish optimism and a sense of humor when they have become lost through abuse or sadness. These are great oils to clean up anything sticky like gum and sticker residue on surfaces or even from hair. Really. You may have to experience it to believe it.
Clementine is derived from Citrus nobilis and the aroma is delightful. It can only be described as yummy. Clementine is one of the best oils for relief from insomnia. In addition, Clementine combats fatigue and is uplifting to mood and emotions as it relieves anxiety and tension.
Mandarin promotes feelings of deep happiness. This oil is an especially good choice for those who tend to dwell in the past, particularly on past emotional traumas. They have survived the trauma, but they have not released it and thrived. Mandarin provides a firmness and a sense of self that allows for personal growth and spiritual development.
Tangerine encourages us to reach out to others with kindness and compassion. This oil has very pleasant calming properties. It can be helpful in soothing all types of hyperactivity, in the body and the mind. Tangerine can have a substantial positive effect on anger, depression, and impulsive behaviors.
Bergamot has a special affinity for the liver meridian. As such, it encourages the release of anger and pain that is being held onto or being held deeply in the body rather than being processed and released. A person needing Bergamot is usually a good listener. They are described by friends and family as cheerful and supportive. Often this cheerfulness is a mask they are using to hide anger, despair, or depression.
Emotionally, Petitgrain presents us with new ideas and new beginnings. Petitgrain brings us to a state of mind where calm, natural growth, without feelings of being pressured, can occur. It is powerfully stabilizing to high-strung temperaments and volatile dispositions or those who have suffered recent emotional or physical trauma.
Neroli is calming, relaxing, uplifting, and encourages confidence. It promotes feelings of joy, peace, and hope. Neroli reawakens passion and sensitivity while changing negative outlooks. This combination of emotional relief brings renewed hope. Neroli can help us trust our intuition and good sense. This oil is particularly appropriate for anyone who has become timid or withdrawn. Neroli can help with cynicism and despair.
Lemon essential oil fills the air with a light, refreshing scent of lemons while it nourishes the nervous systems of everyone in the vicinity. The aroma brings clarity of thought, aids in logical thinking, and helps us connect cause and effect in our lives. Lemon is a good oil for study sessions, improving attention span, and problem-solving.
Lime essential oil is a perfect choice for the very weary – those who are so weary of trials and troubles that they feel far older than their years on earth would indicate. The lively fragrance of lime is stimulating and refreshing. It can help one overcome exhaustion, depression, apathy, and listlessness. Lime is also a good oil for improving memory and concentration
Grapefruit essential oil comes down to a preference for smell. Pink has a slightly sweeter aroma while White is more tart.
Grapefruit is uplifting to the mind and spirit. It is hard to be negative or anxious in the presence of this oil because it promotes feelings of joy, confidence, and spontaneity. A great oil for depression.
LeMint Splash includes two citrus oils as well as peppermint, and spruce. This is a wonderful blend for improving mood and general outlook on life. With its fresh fragrance, it helps dispel negative, unproductive thoughts, replacing them with fresh ideas as it boosts vitality to help you accomplish your goals. At the same time, it is remarkably calming to the emotions and aids focus and the ability to pay attention.
This blend contains 4 citrus oils along with several other amazing oils. LeSunburst was the first citrus blend Butterfly Express created and was what first made me aware of the effects citrus oils can have on boosting our mental health. It is relaxing and calming, especially for children. This blend promotes a sense of well-being and is an excellent remedy for insomnia. LeSunburst, has been used in treatments for anorexia and bulimia. Excellent added to the dishwater, dishwasher, or laundry. LeSunburst makes an excellent oil for cleaning surfaces throughout the house.
Supplements can be a very important part of mental health and while it is best to meet your nutritional needs with the foods you eat it can be so hard to do so in today’s busy world. Finding supplements that you trust can also be a challenge. That is why I love Butterfly’s line of supplements. The following three are very important for boosting mental health.
B-100 Caps provide a full complement of B-Vitamins plus Choline and Inositol. These vitamins work to support energy production, maintain healthy homocysteine metabolism, and promote the health of the nervous system. B vitamins are water-soluble and, with the exception of B-12, have limited storage life in the body. If you are to have sufficient B vitamins available for use by your body systems, daily replenishment is required. It is certainly best to take a full range of B vitamins such as those contained in this particular supplement, rather than supplementing only one or two of the B vitamin family at a time.
B-12 is stored in the liver where it can be accessed for a short time after being stored there. Dietary sources are of animal origin only (meat and dairy) and supplementation with B-12 may be especially important for vegetarians. Those who are deficient in B vitamins tend to feel very, very tired.
Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, especially in the intestinal tract. It is essential in maintaining strong bones and supports dental health. Vitamin D-3 softgels supply this key vitamin in a highly-absorbable liquid softgel form. Research shows that a lack of vitamin D can lead to symptoms of depression.
Vitamin D is normally obtained from the diet or produced by the skin from the ultraviolet energy of the sun. However, it is not abundant in food. As more people avoid sun exposure or limit their sun exposure during cold winter months, Vitamin D supplementation becomes even more necessary to ensure that your body receives an adequate supply.
This Multi+ Women’s Vitamin is absolutely wonderful and specially formulated for women. This gentler and easy-to-swallow and absorb multivitamin features an array of important vitamins and minerals. These include absorbable forms of folate and iron, plus a supportive blend of evening primrose oil for comfortable menstrual cycles, cranberry concentrate for urinary tract health, and much more.
LeTurmoil helps us to view trials from a more positive perspective. This blend is useful in rebuilding the physical/emotional connections after trauma or loss. LeTurmoil is one of the most popular blends for the anger stage of grief and later, if the grief seems to be settling into depression this blend can bring a return to hope and even to joy.
LeTurmoil has also been used to calm hyperactivity and excessive nervousness. This remedy can calm a person who is jumping from project to project, thought to thought, and help them settle down, organize themselves, and accomplish something.
LeTurmoil is a remedy for shock, trauma, stress, overexertion, and overwork, especially when they are affecting physical well-being, weakening the immune system, or bringing the person to the edge of exhaustion and fatigue. This blend can stabilize a person who is feeling faint or going into shock.
Rose is the highest-frequency essential oil. As the frequency of the body rises to meet this amazing oil, wonderful things happen in the body. It is one of the very best oils for use in any emotional crisis. It is useful in extreme debility and fatigue. Rose has a four-fold action on nerves, digestion, vascular, and urinary systems. This action is one of cleansing, rather than stimulation. Rose oil, surprisingly, is also one of the most antiseptic of essential oils. This antiseptic action, combined with its action on capillaries and its soothing and emollient qualities, makes it a wonderful oil for nearly all types of skin.
A very wise man was walking along the edge of the river one day. He heard faint calls for help coming from just over the edge of the rushing river. As he looked over the edge he saw a person, so very afraid, clinging to an old dead branch with all of his might. “Help me,” the poor person calls out to him. “Please, give me your hand. I can’t hold on another moment.” The wise man looks around him and spots a beautiful rose growing on the side of the riverbed. Picking it up, he holds it out to the distraught person, saying, “Take hold of this rose. It is the most magical of flowers. You will be saved and all will be well with you.”
The person immediately reaches for the magic flower, losing his grip on the old dead branch—and the rushing river instantly carries him away. The wise man smiles and walks down the riverbank for a short way. There he finds the person, wet and shaken, but washed ashore quite safely. The wise man hands the person the flower and says gently, with compassion and understanding in his voice, “You only needed to trust and let go.” We choose our attitudes and beliefs based on our perceptions of the experiences in our past. Rose oil can help us understand that nothing from the past needs to hamper our futures.
Butterfly currently carries three different rose oils but Rose de Mai is my favorite.
Rose Absolute and Rose Otto can be used interchangeably. Absolute is thicker, has a dark orange color, and has a very intense scent. Otto is steam distilled and is less overpowering to your sense of smell. It is also thinner and more clear in color so it won’t stain fabrics like Rose Absolute can do. Rose de Mai has a very potent sensuous aroma that is closer to the true scent of the fresh rose. Absolute and Rose de Mai are solvent extracted while Rose Otto is steam distilled. I have long loved Rose essential oil but the aroma of Rose de Mai is closer to the scent of fresh roses than any other I have experienced.
The main properties sought when using Rosehip oil as a carrier oil are vitamins A and C and anti-oxidants. These two vitamins are cytophylactic, meaning that they aid cell regeneration and the sloughing off of old dead cells and cellular waste products. These properties make Rosehip oil an excellent choice for anti-aging and the treatment of damaged skin cells including burns and scars. The combination of antioxidants and vitamin C brightens the skin and reduces or removes skin discoloration. The anti-oxidants found in Rosehip oil also make it a natural anti-inflammatory. Rosehip oil is excellent for dry, chapped lips. This is my favorite carrier oil to use as a moisturizer.
Carrier or base oils are often applied in conjunction with an essential oil. They are made from vegetables, nuts, or seeds and often have therapeutic properties of their own. The carrier oils used in therapeutic settings should be cold pressed rather than produced or processed by chemical methods. This is an important distinction, as some of the carrier oil will be absorbed into the body along with the essential oil.
Carrier oils are used for several different reasons. One major reason is that pure essential oils are often too concentrated to be applied undiluted to the skin. Adding essential oils to a carrier oil also allows the oil to be spread over a larger area and to be absorbed more evenly. The use of a smaller quantity of essential oil is often more beneficial than a larger quantity and is certainly less likely to cause any type of reaction.
There are two gift sets on sale this month. Each gift set comes with two 5ml blends. Regular Butterfly blends come in 10ml bottles so being able to buy them in a 5ml is a great way to try them or let friends try them as the cost is cut almost in half. These sets are expertly paired to complement each other. They make excellent gifts and are a great way to introduce a friend to the wonderful world of essential oils. Each gift set comes with descriptive cards to help you get to know the blends included in the gift set.
There is something about sharing the blessings we have with others that blesses us. Being grateful releases happiness hormones into the brain and serving others is a great antidote to depression and boosts our mental health.
Let’s take a look at the two sets on sale this month and see how they help us Boost Our Mental Health.
The use of LeBaby Me brings feelings of connection and willingness to give and take in relationships, particularly in parent/child relationships. The frequency of this blend is extremely high, well into the spiritual range, but is so well balanced that notes from all three realms (physical, emotional, and spiritual) can be felt and enjoyed. First, the more volatile top notes do their work with the spirit and the emotions, and then the middle and lower notes kick in, to ground and balance the more physical aspects. A good oil for depression and the “baby blues.”
LeHeartSong allows the heart to find its joy and learn to sing again. This is a very high-frequency spiritual and emotional blend. LeHeartSong was created as an anti-depressant blend and is still the #1 blend for use in the treatment of grief and mild depression. This blend is wonderful for getting through a tough time or just making it to the end of a difficult day. It is also quite effective as a protection against negative energy that you are picking up from others at home or work.
LeSanctuary promotes feelings of protection and safety. From this safe place, we can examine ourselves comfortably, listening closely to the whisperings of the spirit and our intuitive knowledge of our strengths and weaknesses. This process helps us develop wisdom and good judgment and lets us build trust in ourselves and our decisions. LeSanctuary brings all of the chakras into harmony with each other.
The aroma of LeTranquility has been known to reduce or eliminate panic attacks and other anxiety-based disorders. LeTranquility can help us develop inner strength, patience, understanding, and confidence. It promotes relaxation and relieves anxiety, stress, tension, and depression. Use LeTranquility to relieve migraines and tension headaches. Since so many of our minor, but annoying physical distresses have their roots in our emotions and our thought patterns.
Can you see why these four blends are some of my favorites and some of the top Butterfly blends? If you haven’t tried these four you need to. They are game changers.
