Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome

What is Restless Leg Syndrome?  Many, many people suffer from what may be termed Restless Leg Syndrome!  The use of the word “syndrome” in a name for a dis-ease state tells us that the cause – or even exactly when it is a dis-ease or when it is just a symptom of something else –  is not well-understood or well-defined in the medical world.  So, let’s start with a very basic, description-based answer to the question.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a condition marked by unpleasant (painful and very hard to live with) sensation in the legs accompanied by a strong urge to move the legs immediately.   The descriptions given by various people who have been diagnosed with this condition vary greatly.  The common denominator among the descriptions is “difficult to describe!”  The sensations in the legs include aching, throbbing, pulling, itching, crawling, and/or burning.  In other words, the legs hurt when you are still- especially when you are trying to sleep.

Common Symptoms

  • Uncomfortable Sensations:  As described above – aching, throbbing, pulling, itching, crawling, and/or burning.  Sensations described as “throbbing” are less common than the other sensations listed here.
  • Stillness:  Symptoms start or get worse when sitting or lying down.
  • Need for Movement:  A strong urge to get up and move your legs.
  • Symptoms relieved, at least partially, by activities such as stretching or walking.  Relief of symptoms by motion is only temporary.
  • The symptoms cannot be considered – only in part – to be explained by any other medical condition currently suffered from.
  • Less frequently, instead of the symptoms listed above, the leg muscles tighten or even flex when the person is holding still.  (Please see the section titled PLMS, below.)
  • The symptoms, occasionally, affect other parts of the body.  The arms may be affected.  Even the head or chest sometimes experience symptoms, although this is rare.
  • Symptoms are worse at night.  Often includes a distinct symptom-free period in the early morning.

Additional (As a Result) Symptoms

  • Disruption in sleep patterns:  The sensations felt can make it difficult to fall asleep.  Staying asleep may also be difficult.  Because a person suffering from RLS gets out of bed to walk around several times during the night, sleep may also be interrupted for other members of the household.
  • Lack of sleep causes the symptoms to worsen.  What a mess.  The symptoms cause a lack of sleep.  Then lack of sleep makes the symptoms worse!
  • Restlessness:  Tossing and turning in bed, floor pacing, constant need to rub the legs.  In children, this restlessness is sometimes misdiagnosed as ADHD.
  • Behavior and work performance issues:  Sleep disruption often result in irritability, moodiness, difficulty concentrating, hyperactivity, and a host of other related problems.  Discomfort when sitting may result in poor job performance if sitting for long periods of time is required to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • PLMD – Periodic Limb Movement Disorder:  Involuntary, repetitive jerking or thrashing movement that occurs when asleep. This movement can be very scary – even causing minor harm – to a spouse lying next to the sufferer.

Some Basic Information

  • One report estimated that 7 to 10 percent of the population of the United States has RLS.  Another report used the figure “30 million Americans.”
  • RLS occurs in both men and women.  However, it occurs more often in women than in men.  In fact, women are almost twice as likely as men to have RLS.
  • RLS begins at any age.  However, it is more common for RLS to occur as a person ages.
  • Even if the symptoms began in childhood or during the teen year, the symptoms often worsen as a person ages.
  • A family connection exists.  A family member with RLS increases your own statistical likelihood of getting RLS.  More than half the people with RLS have a pattern of it in the family.  If a family connection exists, your own risk becomes four to six times greater.

PLMS (Periodic Limb Movement of Sleep)

PLMS is the name given to involuntary leg – and sometimes arm – movements during sleep.  These movements may be simple twitching.  They may also become far more violent spasms of jerking motions.  If you have experienced this – or slept beside someone who does this – you know that it can be quite an adventure.  I have been jolted awake by the running motions of my husband’s legs on more than one occasion.  The worst is those (rare, fortunately) occasions when his arms flail about!  For him, these events always occur when we are under particularly heavy amounts of stress.

More than 80 percent of people with RLS experience this periodic limb movement when sleeping.   On the other hand, many individuals with PLMS do not experience RLS.  My husband does not suffer from the symptoms of RLS.  I do not have the symptoms of PLMS, although I have struggled with RLS from time to time.

Possible Causes

Nerve damage

I found this interesting – and a little bit confusing.  Neuropathy is a separate medical diagnosis.  Numbing, tingling, throbbing in the extremities describes both neuropathy and RLS.  The symptoms of neuropathy, however, do not usually include the restlessness that needing to move to find relief that is seen with RLS.   Diagnosed neuropathy exists in as many as 40% of RLS patients.   This rather high percentage of association between RLS and neuropathy is important when looking at possible causes for both of these conditions.

Essential Oils for Nerve Damage

 LeAboutFace

Frankincense essential oils have a reputation worldwide for crossing the blood/brain barrier, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the pineal and pituitary glands within the brain. Nourishing these structures of the brain has been shown to positively affect the progress of many nerve and brain-related conditions.  LeAboutFace contains essential oils that prevent collagen breakdown in cells and cellular structures and inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators.

The emotional aspects of frankincense include linking past successes (or failures) to our future goals.  This linking of our past with our future goals — connecting cause and effect, actions and consequences – is a great help with decision making.  Being better able to move forward with confidence is exactly what healing from issues with the legs is all about.

AgeLess

LeAgeLess, like LeAboutFace , builds confidence.  It helps us welcome change, moving forward with joy even into the golden years. Although the strength of this blend lies in its impact on emotions, some of the essential oils in this blend are excellent at rebuilding nerves, tissues, veins, and capillaries.  This blend contains, among other beautiful essential oils, helichrysum, opoponax, myrrh, sandalwood, and zanthoxylum.  Any synergistic blend containing these essential oils will be amazing!

LeDeeper

LeDeeper increases blood and lymph circulation to the extremities, making it an effective choice for neuropathy and fibromyalgia.  Since my own family is prone to injuring themselves seriously and regularly, this blend has been worked with and “tweaked” until it is near perfection, in my opinion.

LeKadence

LeKadence improves the uptake of nutrients to the brain and nervous system.  With RLS, the body needs sleep so badly but rest becomes illusive.  LeKadence, with the same oils that make GoodNite effective, can be helpful here. The addition of allspice aids the rejuvenation of the cells as the body rests.

LeQuietEssence

The valerian root in this blend contains some volatile components not found in any other essential oil currently produced for aromatherapy. These components are useful for an incredibly long list of things related to nerves and nervous tension. Combining, as is done in this blend, lavender orange sweet and the amazing nervine St. John’s wort, creates a very effective nerve-rebuilding blend.  This blend is especially nice used in the tub or the shower.

Herbal Remedies for Nerve Damage

Nervine Herbs:  Nervine herbs are used to heal, calm, and strengthen the nerves and to alleviate depression.

Herbs are plant material. As such, it is theoretically possible to find someone who has reacted to every one of them, although reactions are actually quite rare. Unpleasant reactions to nervine herbs is a little bit more common. For this reason, there are 3 different formulas.  Based on the herbs it contains, NV is probably the strongest.  However, I usually prefer the NS formula most of the time.  For relief of the tingling, burning, aching symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome, NT may be a very good choice because of the oatstraw it contains.  Oatstraw contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, silicon, zinc, and iron.

Essential Oils for Muscles

LeBreezey

This formula is an excellent muscle relaxant and pain reliever when you do not have LeWarmDown, LeDeeper, or LePaine handy and you have an issue with any muscle anywhere in the body

LePaine

LePaine contains essential oils that make it useful as a muscle relaxant.  This blend promotes quick healing by increasing circulation and bringing oxygen to struggling muscles. This blend is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and calming to nerves.  Caution: If you use LePaine in the tub or shower for pain relief or muscle relaxation, use no more than 2 or 3 drops.

LePatches

LePatches was designed for the repair and healing of damaged tissues, tendons, and ligaments and is strongly anti-inflammatory.  This blend promotes quicker and more complete healing by inducing oxygen and blood flow to areas where better circulation is needed.

LeTendaCare

LeTendaCare is one of the very best Butterfly oils for use when muscles are tight, strained, injured, or spasming. This blend is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and has some excellent nervine properties. Use LeTendaCare as a massage oil for tired or tense muscles, or to help you – and your legs – relax at the end of a long day. LeTendaCare can be added to a bath as an excellent muscle relaxant and overall tonic.

LeWarmDown

LeWarmDown should be applied, diluted, to any area of the body where there are sore or strained muscles. This blend makes an excellent massage oil.  LeWarmDown is antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory. This makes it an excellent remedy for tight, tired, sore, and aching muscles of any description and especially useful for the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome.  LeWarmDown also increases capillary circulation.

Herbal Remedies for Muscles

BHM contains herbs specific to the rebuilding of bones and tissues.  It should be taken internally to provide necessary nutrients.  It can also be applied as a salve or, for restless legs, made into a liniment and applied topically.

Essential Oils for Pain Relief

LeDeeper

I love this blend!  LeDeeper contains penetrating, anti-inflammatory oils which aid in relieving pain that is deep in the tissues and nerves.

LePaine

Most of the essential oils in this blend are strongly analgesic. In addition, LePaine is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and calming to nerves.  This is one of the best of the pain-relieving Butterfly Essential Oil blends.

LeBreezey

LeBreezey was designed for the relief of lung congestion.  However, because of the ingredients – and the incredible synergy of this blend – it is also excellent for muscle relaxation and pain relief.

Herbal Remedies for Pain Relief

PN and BBLButterfly carries two formulas specifically for pain.  They are PN and BBL.    Nervine formulas are anodyne (meaning they relieve pain), making the nervine formulas –  NT, NS, NV, and BBL – excellent pain relievers.  Nervine herbs are not generally narcotic, at least not the ones that I have used in these formulas. They do not make you feel groggy or disconnected. Although they can help you relax into sleep, they do not present a problem for driving or operating machinery.

ASP Formula:  This formula is considered specific for the spasming of the lungs (coughs).  However, applied as a liniment it is very effective at relieving the symptoms of restless leg syndrome.

Poor Circulation

Lack of circulation to the lower half of the body brings on symptoms similar to RLS, if not RLS itself.   Vein health, especially in the capillaries, seems to be at least part of the problem.  Lying down, sitting, or failing to move about from time to time, naturally worsens borderline circulation issues that already exist.

Essential Oils for Poor Circulation and Vein Health

LeSolitude

LeSolitude’s affinity is for anything to do with heart or vein health. It is truly a cardiovascular oil and vein health essential oil. This blend should be used for varicose veins, spider veins, and to promote capillary health and is the first thing I reach for if my legs getting feeling tired or achy. LeSolitude is also an excellent muscle relaxant.  This is one of my favorite essential oil blends.

LeSunburst

While usually thought of as an oil blend for producing feelings of well-being and calm, LeSunburst is also and excellent choice for increasing circulation, helping with vein health and eliminating lymphatic congestion.

LeVisibility

Capillaries are the finest branches of the blood vessel system. They are fragile and can be easily damaged. Broken capillaries often contribute to Restless Leg Syndrome. Capillary issues can be quite painful because broken ones prevent proper circulation. LeVisibility promotes capillary health and reduces both the visibility and the pain of broken or weak capillaries.   These damaged capillaries may be seen or unseen. LeVisibility, applied to the legs at bedtime, often brings relief. LeVisibility is also good for varicose veins. Always massage upward from the feet when working on vein health.

LeVitality

LeVitality is very specific for the cardiovascular, circulatory, pulmonary, and lymphatic systems. Although it is thought of mostly as a blend for heart conditions, it is also excellent for any circulatory issue anywhere in the body.

Cypress

Cypress strengthens capillary walls and reduces varicose veins.   In addition, cypress is one of the best essential oils for tight muscles and muscle strain.  In fact, cypress is one of the best single oils to reach for in many circumstances. I love and use mostly blends, but cypress is so complex and far-reaching that it is almost like a blend itself.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass improves circulation, regenerates connective tissue, and repairs ligaments.  It is also useful for repairing the parasympathetic nervous system.  Lemongrass is also useful in bladder and kidney disorder and for healing varicose veins.  The aroma of lemongrass awakens curiosity. It encourages us to go outside our usual boundaries and comfort zones.

Herbal Remedies for Poor Circulation and Vein Health

Cayenne/Hawthorne

The combination of these two herbs makes a very effective remedy for anything connected to circulation.  Cayenne rebuilds (yes, rebuilds) vein structures, removes plaque from veins, and sends the blood rushing along carrying nutrients to every cell of the body.  The sensation (the burning feeling) created on the tongue stimulates the brain to release endorphins. Endorphins block pain receptors throughout the body and induce feelings of well being. A positive attitude alone can have a beneficial effect on healing, especially with chronic illnesses.  The constituents of Hawthorn relax and dilate the arteries.  Hawthorn is strongly antioxidant, which helps to prevent or reduce the degeneration of the blood vessels and decreases the permeability and fragility of capillaries.

Lomatium

Lomatium is strongly anti-inflammatory and acts as a stimulant to peripheral circulation. Lomatium has the ability to make the blood more alkaline. A body that is alkaline will detoxify itself naturally.

Prickly Ash

Prickly Ash is considered by some to be somewhat like Cayenne and is used when Cayenne causes upset to the stomach. However, Prickly Ash is a valuable herb in its own right. The bark of Prickly Ash was listed in the Pharmacopeia of the United States from 1800 to 1906.

An important use of Prickly Ash is the improvement of circulation in diseases such as Raynaud’s or Restless Leg Syndrome or any condition in which the arteries of the extremities have narrowed and are preventing sufficient blood from reaching the hands, or the legs and the leg muscles.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Calcium, Magnesium, or Other Mineral Deficiencies

Being deficient in any of the minerals needed by muscles and nerves likely contributes to the symptoms that describe RLS.  Nerves require calcium to fire properly.  If nerves do not receive the nourishment that they need, rather than firing efficiently they become erratic.  The result is, muscle spasms, particularly in the legs.

Vitamin D

Statistically and according to studies, vitamin D deficiency was found in more than 75% of persons suffering from the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome.  Vitamin D acts as an anti-inflammatory. It also protects and rebuilds regions of the brain which are responsible for receiving both nerve pain and movement signals.

Vitamin K

This vitamin is essential to healthy blood and to vein health.  Poor circulation to the legs leads to the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome. Green leafy vegetables such as kale, green leaf lettuce, spinach, or swiss chard contain mega amounts of vitamin K.  Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are also excellent sources of this vital nutrient.

Vitamin K is essential to the uptake and utilization of Vitamin D.

B-Vitamins

Briefly stated, the various B vitamins each play essential roles in nervous system health.  For example, B6 is essential to the metabolism or synthesis of nearly all the chemical transmitters (neurotransmitters) that move messages around in the entire central nervous system.   B12 is essential to the maintenance of the myelin sheaths which surround nerves and protect them from damage. A deficiency of folic acid, another B vitamin, is known to contribute to anemia and neuropathy.

Herbal Remedies for Nutritional Deficiencies

Herbs are powerhouses of Nutrition!  Every single herb contains many, many different vitamins and minerals.  For a very basic list—meant only to give you the basic idea that all herbs are very nutritious—please see the chart found in Chapter One of Butterfly Miracles with Herbal MedicineMIN, KNA, and BHM are Butterfly herbal formulas specifically designed to contain as many of the vitamins and minerals necessary for good health as possible.

Butterfly Express also carries a full line of liquid mineral supplements.  I have found these to be very helpful and effective.

Essential Oils for Uptake of Nutrients

LeEndoRelief

Support of the endocrine system, especially the thyroid and parathyroids, aids the proper absorption of calcium and other minerals.

LeEternity

The synergistic blend of essential oils in LeEternity enhances vitamin and mineral absorption for the overall improvement of health and vitality. LeEternity, because it helps the body absorb calcium, can help prevent such things as osteoporosis and the mineral deficiencies that may lie behind RLS. The oils in this blend have been used traditionally for various problems related to the cardiovascular and circulatory systems.

LeEZ Traveler

LeEZTraveler was originally created to assist with motion sickness.  However, it is an excellent blend for any type of digestive problem.  Improvement in digestive system health always brings about better absorption of nutrients.

LeIntention

LeIntention contains only four essential oils.  All of these oils are considered mild.  They can be used every day, even several times a day.  Nevertheless, these wonderful essential oils, combined as they are in this blend are useful for the following systems:  lymphatic system, immune system, nerves, digestive system, circulation, capillary health, hormone balance, metabolism, governing vessel meridian, liver/gallbladder meridian, solar plexus, and heart chakras.

LeWarmDown

LeWarmDown seems to aid calcium absorption and distribution throughout the body.  And it does this while helping to relax tight muscles and improve circulation.

Digestive Issues such as Candida Overgrowth or Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Anything – not just candida overgrowth or IBS – that contributes to an inability of the digestive system to uptake nutrients may become a contributing factor to RLS.

Candida, as discussed in the blog linked here sets up a host of nutritional deficiencies.   Candida, in an overgrowth situation, produces a host of toxins, as well.  All of this has, also, a very negative impact on the nerves the circulatory system, and the muscles.

Essential Oils for Digestive Issues

LeEZTraveler

Besides alleviating the physical symptoms of motion sickness, LeEZTraveler promotes feelings of calmness, emotional strength, and the ability to cope with the day’s events and responsibilities.  This is an excellent blend for improving or maintaining overall digestive health.

LeInsideOut

This blend has been the mainstay of the Butterfly line-up for digestive issues for many years.  LeInsideOut improves the function of the digestive system. It helps with upset stomach, belching, bloating, stomach cramps, heartburn, constipation, and diarrhea. LeInsideOut’s ability to be effective for both constipation and diarrhea may seem odd; it is not. Natural remedies work with the body to return systems to balanced and healthy states. They are not the administration of an “opposing” remedy or force. This is true in every aspect of the body and mind when working with natural healers. This blend should be applied over the abdomen for colon problems and for candida overgrowth.

LeJulia

This blend was originally created for upset tummy issues with a newborn grand-daughter.  LeJulia calms and soothes the emotions, allowing the “knots” in the stomach to dissolve. The synergy of the oils in this blend creates an atmosphere where fear, anxiety, and the need to hold on tightly to emotions can be released. It seems odd that infants and small children should have such issues, but the birth process and coming into this world can be a difficult transition for some sensitive spirits.  On a more physical level, LeJulia is useful for the release of flatulence (gas), constipation, and other intestinal distress in infants and small children.  This blend surprised me by being just as effective for adults as for small children.

LeSynopsis

LeSynopsis also has a special affinity for both the small and large intestines. This is a great blend for indigestion, bloating of the stomach or intestinal area, constipation, and diarrhea.  This blend contains many of the best digestive oils in the essential oil repertory combined with essential oils that are specific to the emotional drivers of digestive and colon issues.

Digestive problems that include a great deal of bloating and cramping or alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation often have emotional roots.  Some possible emotional drivers might include holding on to the past, feeling a deep need to be in control, or maintain control, in all situations at whatever the cost, a need for greater trust and cooperation in relationships, and a need to unravel or untwist complicated situations or relationships. Feelings of fear or rejection may also be a part of digestive disturbance patterns.

LeCandila

LeCandila was created for use against thrush, candida, and vaginal yeast type infections.   This formula is not a “magic bullet”—there is no such thing, really. To eradicate a candida overgrowth you must make dietary changes. The use of a good quality acidophilus or pro-biotic is also recommended. A Vitamin E supplement in your diet may also be of benefit.

Herbal Remedies for Digestive Issues

CAN

The herbal formula, CAN, is meant to be taken internally to aid in fighting an overgrowth of Candida albicans. This formula can also be used for any other bacterial infection that has gone systemic or seems to be particularly virulent in nature. It is impossible to fight a bacterial infection, especially one that has traveled throughout the body if the diet is acidic. Bacteria thrive in an acidic environment and cannot survive in an alkaline one.

CD

CD is a combination to be used for inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract. It could be useful for such conditions as chronic indigestion, colitis, ulcers of the small intestine, and constipation. The Plantain, Marshmallow, and Papaya Leaf are particularly soothing and healing, keeping any cleansing side effects more mild than might otherwise be.  CD is effective as a mild colon cleanse.  As always, be sure to support the liver and the kidneys whenever a colon cleanse of any kind, however mild, is attempted. KB, LC, RC, and this CD formula together make a good all-around cleansing program.

COL

Use COL for colic, gas, and stomach pain in both adults and children.  Catnip/Chamomile is equally effective. Chamomile is usually strong enough for babies. If I am not getting the results I want then I will try this one next. Fennel is quite different from Chamomile and sometimes, a bit too strong for a very young baby.  This formula is best made in glycerin.

COLA

COLA may be a bit strong for a baby or small child; the COL formula should probably be used for small ones.  This formula can be made as a tea or a tincture. Sipping a warm tea however, can be especially soothing if the problem has roots in the gallbladder.

GI

This remedy is often effective for the early stages of gallbladder problems when taken 15 minutes before every meal or snack. It effectively notifies the gallbladder to produce and distribute bile. It consists of some great herbal bitters that have been in use for a century or two and some very healing demulcent herbs.

LB

This bowel formula is a bit stronger than CD (formerly Colon/Digestive) and could be used alternately with it. Be mindful of the Licorice Root if there is a heart problem such as a valve problem or an arrhythmia that might make Licorice Root contra-indicated. Bilberry can be substituted or the Licorice Root can just be left out altogether. Careful muscle testing, if you have developed that skill, can let you know whether or not Licorice Root is contra-indicated for someone.  Please, don’t panic about this caution.  The reaction, the first few times, will be a slightly racing heartbeat.  This will be plenty of warning to discontinue the use of licorice root for that person.

Insufficient Iron in the Blood or Poor Iron Metabolism

Iron Deficiency Anemia

Some studies and some medical sites and institutions list iron deficiency (anemia) as a major contributor to restless leg symptoms.  One major study focused on iron deficiency in brain tissue.  If iron is lacking in the brain, it was first lacking in the blood that should have carried it there – as well as to the muscles and nerves of the legs.  Low iron levels in the brain cause damage to dopamine receptor sites.  This is critical to the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome.

Pregnancy (includes, in some way, all of the causes listed above)

I hate it when pregnancy is listed as an illness or even as the cause of an illness.

Many women are anemic during pregnancy.  Blood volume increases to support the pregnancy.  Maintaining sufficient iron in the blood is particularly difficult during stages of the maximum growth of the baby and placenta. The weight of the baby and the placenta, especially when sitting or lying down, compromises circulation in the major artery feeding the feet and legs. Iron is not the only mineral deficiency common to pregnancy.  Malabsorption issues also plague many mothers-to-be.

I certainly experienced symptoms similar to RLS during my pregnancies.  Since I didn’t seek a medical diagnosis, I make no definite claims that it was RLS – but the symptoms certainly matched. I do know that I had issues with calcium absorption (kidney stones, gallstones, and even calcium deposits in the placenta in one pregnancy).  Anemia also existed for me as did the tendency of my legs to “fall asleep” when I sat still for too long.   In addition, circulation to my legs was, and sometimes still is, a major problem for me.

Essential Oils for Iron Insufficiency

LeLifeForce

Perhaps LeLifeForce seems like an odd choice for inclusion in this category.  However, this blend immediately raises the over-all frequency of the body, improving outlook and response to stress and trauma.  It may or may not be useful for raising iron levels or iron absorption, but it certainly is useful for the fatigue and nervous stress and iron insufficiency creates.

LeRevitalize

This blend is especially effective for those who are worn out from chronic illness or who make a habit out of running faster than they have strength most of the time.  LeRevitalize is a good digestive aid, particularly in eliminating bloating, belching, and heartburn.  Once again, improving digestion will improve the uptake and utilization of iron and other nutrients.  In addition, this blend simply raises the overall energy of the body.  This blend is an excellent choice for long-term or chronic illnesses with their debilitating drains on energy and emotional well-being.

Herbal Remedies for Iron Insufficiency

KNA

These three herbs contain all of the trace minerals, in adequate amounts and excellent proportions, that have been identified as vital to good health. These herbs are particularly high in absorbable calcium, natural iron that does not cause constipation, iodine, vitamin C, and vitamin A.

TY

This recipe is effective in providing the minerals that are needed for healthy thyroid function. These nutrients are often missing in the diets of people living in the mountain west, as I do.  The thyroid gland requires a lot of nourishment. Approximately 6 liters of blood pass through the thyroid every day, but this doesn’t do much to keep the thyroid “fed” unless the required nutrients are available in the blood.

Dopamine

Dopamine is a very important chemical messenger in the brain.  It has many functions.  It is involved in memory, the ability to concentrate and pay attention, and in regulating muscles and body movements.  Dopamine is also responsible for feelings of satisfaction with a job well done which motivates us to repeat positive behaviors because they made us feel good in this way.

Dopamine plays a significant role in Restless Leg Syndrome.  If there is too little dopamine being manufactured by the body or, more frequently with RLS, too little is being picked up by dopamine receptor sites, trouble is inevitable.

How might dopamine levels and uptake become insufficient?  The amino acid, l-tyrosine is essential to the building of dopamine.  The wrong kinds of fats and too little protein in the diet leads to deficiencies of l-tyrosine and, therefore, insufficient production of dopamine.  Certain drugs also alter the chemical pathways by which dopamine is created.

Even if sufficient dopamine is being created, damaged dopamine receptor sites in the brain prevent dopamine from reaching important nerves throughout the body.  This is especially true of the nerves in the extremities.

What damages dopamine receptor sites?  Several things. One important connection is the dopamine receptor sites may be damaged by diets high in sugar.  If you suffer from restless leg syndrome symptoms, lowering the amount of refined sugar you are consuming, especially at night, can make a significant difference.  Watch out for the hidden sugars that are found in condiments and sauces.  Spaghetti sauce and ketchup are two such culprits.

Iron and Dopamine Receptor Sites

It has been shown that iron is essential to dopamine receptor site health.  But having sufficient iron in the blood tells only part of the story.  The iron must reach the brain in order to build, or heal, dopamine receptor sites.

When our bodies are in a constant state of “fight, flight, or freeze”, the immune system goes into hyperdrive in the production of certain types of cytokines.  Some cytokines, for reasons still unknown, shut down iron transport pathways which should allow iron into the brain.  Too few dopamine receptor sites are being built and what sites there are do not function well enough because of dietary deficiencies.  The result is nerve damage.  The result of nerve damage may be restless leg syndrome or a host of other ills such as neuropathy, depression, or insomnia, to name just a few.

Essential Oils for Mood Elevation and Receptor Site Cleansing

LeBelieve

As LeBelieve helps us move into a more self-forgiving and self-confident state, we should feel more generous, cooperative, and compassionate towards others. We will also find contentment and inner strength.

LeCherish

In LeCherish, the intense aroma of the jasmine is moderated by osmanthus and cistus making this blend both delightful and powerful.  The aroma of this blend encourages us to set our feet on a path that will help us reach a higher plateau.  A very special aspect of LeCherish is utilized as this high-frequency blend helps us rebuild our emotional balance and gain perspective in the aftermath of quarrels, traumatic events, the loss of a loved one, or the loss of a cherished hope or dream. This intense blend requires the use of only a drop or two at a time.

LeExhilaration

LeExhilaration is especially beneficial in those situations which appear hopeless and discouraging. With the use of this blend we find our emotions strengthening and stabilizing until we are able to see new and different solutions to old problems. It is as if there are now several paths available to us, but we previously could only see one way out of the woods.

Several of the oils in this blend profoundly affect physical body systems. Some are anti-inflammatories and others target specific organs or functions. If your physical body has been strained or weakened by situations that are testing your courage and confidence, LeExhilaration can be of benefit to you. It may have an impact on physical things that you did not realize were connected to the emotions you were feeling.

LeFaith

This blend is specific for dealing with fears concerning being abandoned or left to cope with situations totally on one’s own. If you are prone to useless worrying, you may find this blend helpful. As its name implies, it generates a feeling of faith and self-confidence within us.

LeInner Peace

LeInner Peace affects the pineal gland. The pineal gland regulates blood pressure, body temperature, motor function, sleep patterns, and any cyclical activity in the body.  LeInner Peace can aid us in staying focused and clear, particularly about the direction of our lives.

LeTranquility

Physically, LeTranquility can be useful for circulatory problems to the extremities. Stress takes a high toll on the vitamin and mineral levels of the body, especially the levels of calcium.  LeTranquility is useful as a sleep aid, especially when the problem is “mind chatter” that just won’t quit. Instead of sleeping, even though we need to sleep badly, we lay there reviewing the past day in our minds or making plans for tomorrow.  One of the best-loved of the Butterfly Express, LLC, blends, LeTranquility can help us develop inner strength, patience, understanding, and confidence

Kidney Disease or Trouble

Kidney disease or kidney function impairment from any cause is listed as a primary driver of RLS symptoms.  In my experience, however, whenever I stress my kidneys I feel RLS-type symptoms in my legs, especially when at rest.  It doesn’t seem to matter whether the kidney stress was diet-related – too much chocolate, for example – or fear-based.  If I let fear or anxiety – instead of faith and confidence – rule my life, the symptoms of restless leg syndrome appear.

Essential Oils for Kidney Issues

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is an excellent detoxifier of the lymphatic system and aids the kidneys in maintaining proper fluid levels throughout the body.

LeAcknowledge

Kidney and bladder problems such as frequent infections and cystitis, with their emotional connection to fear and feelings of inadequacy, often respond favorably to this blend. The use of this essential oil blend may not only relieve the discomfort of the moment but will also help lessen the likelihood and frequency of future attacks.

LeAssurance

LeAssurance is an especially good choice when there is a need to overcome feelings of anxiety, fear, or apathy.  These are some of the key emotions to sensitive kidneys.

LeLetting Go

Letting go of the emotional baggage that we don’t need can have an energizing effect on the colon, kidneys, liver, and gall-bladder in particular. The holding on to negativity from the past can be the root cause of constipation. Fear can cause the kidneys and the bladder to function below optimum levels.

LeReflections

LeReflections was formulated to strengthen the kidneys of both physical and emotional levels. The kidneys have been given the vital task of collecting and disposing of the waste products from cellular metabolism. The kidneys also regulate the balance of fluids throughout our bodies.  The fluids in the body are believed to have a direct correspondence to emotions. The kidneys respond immediately to fear, grief, and loss. LeReflections can strengthen our kidney function, helping us to cope emotionally with the events of our lives.

Herbal Remedies for Kidney Issues

KB

This is an excellent and wonderfully strong kidney formula. Some of the herbs are liver cleansers. I prefer to use KB for a few weeks (with an infection fighter) and then switch to the milder diuretic formula, KT for a period of rebuilding and soothing of the urinary tract. If needed I will repeat this pattern—KB followed by KT—several times until the entire urinary system is operating optimally.

KT

This is a mild and healing diuretic (without the side effects of drugs). This is a formula that I have relied on for years with my own badly damaged kidneys. It is one of the most helpful formulas in my repertory, for myself and others. I have found that uric acid crystals play a part in a great many chronic diseases, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis to give just two examples. It would not surprise me to learn that this is true of some cases of RLS, also.  Regular use of the KT formula alleviates many of the associated symptoms of these chronic conditions. KT is helpful as a kidney support during any illness and when doing any kind of cleanse.

KS

Both Stone Root and Gravel Root are renowned around the world in widely divergent cultures for dissolving kidney stones so that they will pass more easily.  That is the focus of this formula.  It takes time and that time can be a bit painful.  The stones must be kept up out of the ducts in the meantime.  Please see the comments for this remedy in my book, Butterfly Miracles with Herbal Remedies, for further information.

Temperature

The uncomfortable sensations of Restless Leg Syndrome are responsive to temperature and to temperature changes.  Strangely, in some persons it is cold that brings on symptoms; in others, heat is a trigger.   Some people find their symptoms are worse when the weather is humid and hot. Other people may have more severe symptoms when their extremities get cold for whatever reason.

It is important that a person with Restless Leg Syndrome ascertain if hot or cold is a trigger for them.  Taking either a cool shower or, conversely, taking a hot bath or shower before bed might be very helpful.  The use of hot or cold packs – whichever is appropriate for you – when you have a flare-up may relieve symptoms as well.

Medications/Chemicals Substances Linked to RLS

While medications are used to combat RLS, with limited results, there are several medications that have been found to contribute to the problem.

  • Antidepressants
  • Allergy medications
  • Anti-nausea medication
  • Dopamine antagonists
  • Beta-blockers
  • Anticonvulsant drugs
  • Withdrawal from some of the drugs listed above
  • Caffeine
  • Nicotine
  • Alcoholic beverages

All of these things, as well as a host of other things, impact the ability of the liver to accomplish its more than 500 necessary functions.  If something isn’t good for your liver, it isn’t good for you either.  Furthermore, it will contribute to a host of ills.  Among them will be the possibility of restless leg syndrome.  Believe me, you do not want to go there AND if you are there you know that you want to find a way out.

Older forms of antihistamines is highlighted above because it caught my attention particularly.  I suffered quite a lot from RLS symptoms as a younger woman.  I also consumed a great many allergy medications during my childhood, my teen years, and during the early days of marriage and motherhood.  As I walked away from allergies and allergy medications – and all other drugs – these symptoms have vanished, for the most part.  A tricky kidney, an old sacrum injury that flares up from time to time, and a tendency to anemia bring these symptoms on, in a much milder form, from time to time if I am not careful and vigilant.

Combinations of the Above Causes

It is unlikely, at least in my mind, for the nasty sensations that make up RLS to have only one cause for any of us.  Circulatory or other problems brought on by medications aggravated by anemia might be one combination scenario.  Consumption of alcohol and/or caffeine combined with either kidney or liver deficiency is, perhaps, another.

Possible Homeopathic Assistance

With homeopathic remedies, the emotional picture is as important as – or more important than – the physical symptoms.

Arsenicum album

Twitching, spasming, burning, restlessness, must move feet and legs constantly or be walking about.  Cramps in the calves.

Rhus toxicodendron

This is a major nerve remedy with many symptoms applying to the legs and feet.  Better from heat.  Worse on beginning to move but further motion ameliorates most symptoms, particularly those in the legs.  This is the first remedy I would look at, especially if the mental/mind symptoms fit at all.

Tarentula hispanica

This is a remedy in which motion is absolutely necessary and almost always helps with whatever the symptoms happen to be.  A keynote of Tarentula is that symptoms appear suddenly and are intense immediately.

Zincum metallicum

Not surprisingly, the zinc picture covers many of the nervous leg symptoms associated with Restless Leg Syndrome.

Cell Salts

Mag Phos #8 (Magnesium Phosphate)

Indicated specifically for RLS.  Fine tremors of the extremities, muscular tension, nervous tics and muscle twitching, poor sleep, blood sugar issues, water retention, heart problems, and a host of other symptoms.

Kali Phos #6 (Potassium Phosphate)

This remedy is a very effective general nerve remedy.  Potassium phosphate helps to regulate the transfer of nutrients into cells.  Agitated nerves, fatigue, impulsive behaviors, headaches, stress, and mental strain are some of the indications for this remedy. I love my herbs and oils and I am grateful for the relief brought to me when I use them.  Thanks for taking the time to read my blog.

Lifestyle Changes

Stretching

For many people, stretching the legs at the beginning and end of each day has proven helpful.  Perhaps, even a few stretches in the middle of the day would be a good idea also.

Baths and Massages

I find that a warm bath just before bedtime eliminates a host of sleep issues.  When there isn’t time for that, I at least try to massage my legs and shoulders.  Also, both of these would be greatly improved by the addition of essential oils.

Warm or Cool Packs

Interestingly, different people – and different sites – recommend different things.  Some recommend alternating between hot and cold.  Heat has always been the answer for me.

Relaxation techniques

Stress, or not being able to manage it well, often aggravates RLS.  If this is the case with you, consider relaxation techniques such as yoga or reading before bedtime.  Avoid making the first few moments in bed the time in which you review your day and worry about the things you didn’t get done or things that might have gone poorly.

Exercise

Exercise, at least for me, keeps me RLS symptom-free.  Emphasis is placed on not over-doing it.  It is also, typically, claimed that working out late in the day often intensifies the symptoms.  For myself, I find that exercise late in the day improves circulation and relieves any tendency for muscle cramping and tingling, especially if I finish with some basic stretches.  (I only overdo exercise in the morning.  I love to exercise.  It gives me energy and puts me in a good mood for the whole day!)

Good Sleep Habits

Fatigue (and stress) worsens RLS symptoms for most people.  Relaxing before bedtime is a great benefit to most of us.  A comfortable bed, a quiet and peaceful environment, going to bed and waking up at the same time are just a few basic sleep suggestions.  Remember, most RLS sufferers experience their most restful, symptom-free sleep in the morning.  Take advantage of this, if you can, to get adequate sleep.

Do NOT Resist the Urge to Move

The Mayo Clinic Site as well as other sites having to do with RLS specifically, advise sufferers not to resist the urge to move.  If you do this, you will likely find your symptom getting worse!

The Popcorn Proposition

I came across an amusing – but also informative and helpful – article on the RLS Foundation site.  This entertaining contributor told of her troubles with attending movies.  You can imagine how sitting still in a movie theater might trigger RLS symptoms!  She claimed that consuming popcorn – either in large amounts or very, very slowly so that it lasted for the entire movie from an aisle seat – was the answer.

She credits the popcorn solution with two advantages aspects.  First, she is doing something with her hands.  Movement, even though it is not with her legs, appears to help!  Second, the aisles seat means that, psychologically, she knows that she can get up and move if she wants to. She says, “All of this makes it sound like RLS is purely mental – not real. Something the brain cooks up. That’s nonsense, as any of us with RLS knows. However, psychological factors can alleviate the symptoms or make them worse.”  She points out that she often has little difficulty with sitting very still – when her mind is occupied by painting, for example. Just something to think about!  Perhaps, you have noticed a similar thing.

Disorders Associated with RLS

Disorders Associated with RLS

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Fibromyalgia:  Persons with fibromyalgia have both nerve damage and increased sensitivity to pain.
  • Parkinson’s disease:  Insufficient dopamine being produced in the brain contributes to Parkinson’s disease and to the symptoms of RLS.
  • Kidney disease, uremia, dialysis:  The kidneys help detoxify the body.  They also maintain proper acid/alkaline balance in the body.
  • Nerve damage associated with diabetes
  • Spinal nerve damage
  • Rheumatoid arthritis:  This condition is an indication of information.  Inflammation contributes to toxicity and to muscle pain.
  • Celiac disease and other digestive/colon issues:  Of course, an obvious correlation between digestive issues and nutritional deficiencies connected to RLS exists.
  • Peripheral neuropathy:  A fancy name for nerve damage to the limbs.
  • Varicose veins and other circulatory disorders
  • Diabetes:  One complication of diabetes is nerve damage.  Damaged nerves in turn create the uncomfortable sensations of RLS.
  • Depression:  The same chemicals which create depression are also linked to RLS.  In addition, mineral deficiencies that contribute to depression also contribute to RLS.
