In December we will discuss Anxiety, Stress and Self-Reflection. I would like to begin today by recounting a story told by one of my favorite authors, Bruce H. Lipton, in his book The Biology of Belief. I will paraphrase as best I can, in the interest of keeping this segment brief—well, sort of.
Dr. Lipton uses the example of a track race to illustrate for his readers the effects of stress on the body. A well-trained and healthy group of sprinters steps up to the starting line. They hear the command, “On your mark,” and they drop to their hands and knees. Then the announcer barks, “Get set.” Their muscles tighten as they prop themselves up on their fingers and toes. In a normal race, the strain and tension they are experiencing lasts only a second or two before the command, “Go!” is heard.
But what if the “Go” command never came? These unfortunate athletes would be left at the starting blocks, their blood coursing with adrenaline, their bodies rapidly going into deep fatigue as they try to stay prepared for a race that never begins. No matter how healthy and toned their physical bodies are or how much they have prepared their minds for the race, every athlete would physically collapse from the strain.
Too many of us today live in a “Get set” world! Study after scientific study has shown that our hyper-vigilance is wreaking havoc on our physical health, mental stability, and emotional well-being.
So, what’s the solution? May I offer three quick pieces of advice, based on my own experience:
Count your blessings! A young son of mine, counseled during a family meeting to “count his blessings,” reported in church—over the microphone at the pulpit—the next week that he had counted his blessings and found 385 of them. (I’m not exactly sure of the number, but you get the gist.) There never was a happier, more contented, or more willing-to-serve child, nor man, than he has become.
Count your strengths instead of your weaknesses. Then get to work using your strengths in the service of others. Our suffering is too often more the result of our thoughts than our circumstances. We alone have control over our thoughts! Suffering because of our mindset is optional and up to us.
Replace fear with faith. It has been proven over and over—also in scientific studies—that meeting tragedy and difficulties with calm assurance, knowing we (with Heaven as our partner) have overcome challenges before and can do so again, reduces the impact on our health and well-being when life’s realities and obstacles inevitably come our way.
Anxiety is too often fear of the future and doubt in our ability to handle it.
The health benefits provided by proper nutrition, herbal remedies, and the impact of essential oils on our minds and bodies can have a tremendous effect on our ability to look to the future with courage and determination, helping us to be happy in the here and now. See the full list of topics.

Blessed Waters, like homeopathics, are a true energy modality. I love herbs and essential oils BUT when I am seriously in need of dramatic and rapid healing results, I always include these phenomenal healers in my regimen. The remedies highlighted in this article are very low potency. This means that they need to be taken more than once in a day—4 or 5 times would not be too much—and for several days in a row. However, after 5 days, or so, a day or 2 break needs to be taken. This allows the body and mind to pick up the healing process if it is ready to do so.
This remedy is specifically designed for panic attacks and anxiety caused by a recent injury. It is also effective for fear stemming from the dread of an upcoming event or responsibility. This formulation contains only three remedies, each of which is a powerhouse in its class. Aconitum napellus is used for accidents or illnesses severe enough to cause fear, shock, or intense anxiety. Hypericum’s profile, among a long list of other symptoms, includes excessive pain or nerve pain that shoots along a nerve pathway. Piper methysticum, as an herb, is a strong stimulant; as a homeopathic remedy, it addresses mental tension and headaches accompanied by a heavy feeling in the chest and insomnia. A person needing this remedy will feel better with movement and fresh air but will worsen with reading or any mental work.
The keynote of this remedy is restlessness, with a strong urge to be up and doing or going somewhere! The ‘need’ to ‘go and do’ is pronounced, but the energy to do so will likely be lacking. There may even be extreme debility and exhaustion, along with stinging neuralgic pain, muscle twitching, palpitations, and an erratic pulse as the blood vessels become involved in the spasming. Other symptoms include pressure over the heart with palpitations when trying to take a deep, calming breath. Symptoms worsen in the evening or when confined in a small room!
This remedy was created to be a natural and safe solution for relieving stress and nervous anxiety that cause pressure headaches in the back of the neck or head. It addresses mental and physical exhaustion brought on by overwork, overstimulation, or excessive worry. One ingredient in this combination alleviates symptoms such as mental confusion and waking suddenly from deep sleep. Additionally, two Bach flower remedies are included to help alleviate symptoms of despondency, despair, suppressed anger, and a variety of physical symptoms triggered by these emotions.
Tension #2 is most often chosen when the onset of symptoms, both mental and physical, begins slowly and insidiously, gradually increasing before being followed by a sudden slide into serious fatigue and prostration. Symptoms often follow a significant emotional shock of some kind. Due to the gradual onset in the beginning, the person typically prides themselves on handling the stress well and fails to respond to healing remedies as quickly as needed. These are key symptoms of the remedy Phosphorus. The remaining remedies in the combination are included to help cope with various physical and mental symptoms that accompany the aftermath of severe mental and emotional shock.
This particular combination remedy is specific to the sympathetic nervous system when those nerves seem to be in hyper-drive. Symptoms of need include restlessness, inability to relax, and often feeling jittery. Physical symptoms, as the situation worsens, may include sweating accompanied by cold hands and feet, trembling, diarrhea, headaches, high blood pressure, and cardiac arrhythmia (tachycardia).
These amazing healers are also referred to as Tissue Salts, Schuessler Salts (after the man who originally created them), and Biochemic Salts.
The word “biochemic” is derived from the Greek word bios, which means “life.” Biochemic, therefore, refers to the chemistry of life. According to biochemic theory, there are twelve major inorganic salts that make up the composition of our cells and blood. Blood is to the body what soil is to a plant. Poor, exhausted soil that lacks essential nutrients produces weak and sickly plants. Similarly, poor, exhausted blood that lacks essential constituents will produce weak, sickly bodies that are prone to disease and unable to provide the quality of life we would like to have. By enriching the soil, plants can thrive. By enriching the blood and ensuring that the proper nutrients are carried to the cells, we can maintain or recover a healthy balance within ourselves.
The strength of our cells—and, as a result, the strength of our organs and tissues—depends on having the necessary quantities of these important salts. If they become depleted in our tissues or cells, or if they become imbalanced, proper function is lost. In fact, biochemic theory maintains that every disease of the human family is due to a lack of one or more of these organic building blocks. I am not sure I fully agree with the “every” part of this statement, but it is an interesting hypothesis.
Cell salts are very much energetic remedies. They contain no material dose of the inorganic salts and minerals from which they are made and cannot be considered supplements in any sense of the word. Are they homeopathic? Schuessler emphatically said “NOT,” as they work by slightly different principles and in slightly different ways than traditional homeopathic and blessed water remedies. Like homeopathics, however, they bring a certain energy pattern to the attention of the body.
LeConnection has a delightful aroma that is centering, grounding, and emotionally balancing. This oil is excellent to diffuse or wear when life becomes too chaotic and overwhelming. This blend can assist us in rebuilding our confidence and faith in our abilities. As with almost all natural products, bringing the body and mind into balance is what they do. With LeConnection, this means that this amazing formulation is very effective for people who are characteristically over-enthusiastic and often have unrealistic expectations of themselves, those around them, and life in general. Nevertheless, despite their enthusiasm for new projects, they often manage to worry themselves into a frenzy of fear and anxiety.
LeTranquility is one of the best-loved blends in the Butterfly lineup. This blend is the first thing you should reach for whenever someone is having a panic attack. More often than not, LeTranquility will stop the attack completely. As the creator of the formulation, I was even surprised by its immediate effectiveness the first time I witnessed it. Late one night, a neighbor showed up with her daughter-in-law, who was experiencing a full-blown panic attack. I had never personally witnessed one before. I simply waved an open bottle of LeTranquility under her nose and instructed her to take a deep breath. Both women did so, and they calmed down in a matter of seconds!
Over many years, LeTranquility has proven to be a great blend for use with any type of anxiety disorder, stress-induced symptoms, and as a sleep aid when “mind chatter” just won’t let you get any restful sleep.
A very interesting and well-put-together blend, LeUplift contains essential oils from plant resins, flowers, trees, and even a fruit, making it a comprehensive and effective blend on many levels—emotionally and physically. This is an excellent blend for states of mental exhaustion and is also calming when stress or anxiety have placed us in a hyper-vigilant state of mind. It is emotionally soothing and renews our passions in life. Each of the essential oils in this blend was carefully selected for its grounding, soothing, and restorative properties and was blended properly to uplift the body, mind, and spirit when stress or anxiety have upset our usual balanced state.
LeUplift helps us moderate impulsive behavior and allows us to be more grounded so we can make better choices. It is excellent for coping with drug and alcohol withdrawals and for use in substance abuse treatment plans.
Like all conifer oils, Cedarwood enhances feelings of security and protection. The aroma of Cedarwood calms anger and relieves nervous tension. It quiets the mind that keeps going over the same details, analyzing and reanalyzing them. Cedarwood bolsters the will, enabling us to stand firm when we have made a decision, even in the face of persistent opposition from those around us. Cedarwood can provide us with strength in times of crisis, helping us to stand strong and refuse to lose confidence or faith in ourselves and our ability to make the right choices. This is an excellent oil to support us when entering strange or unfamiliar situations. Cedarwood oil has been shown to be effective in the treatment of ADHD because it stabilizes beta and theta waves.
Lime essential oil is an excellent choice for those feeling weary from life’s trials, often making them feel older than their actual age. Its lively fragrance is both stimulating and refreshing, making it particularly helpful on mornings when you wake up exhausted and reluctant to face the day’s responsibilities. This oil is also great for enhancing memory and concentration, and it effectively removes gum, wood stains, oil, and grease from clothing.
The aroma of Patchouli oil is very calming and centering. It helps bring about a cooperative effort between your heart and your head. Self-imposed barriers and limitations seem to melt away. Patchouli can relieve anxiety, fear, and indecision. Patchouli encourages us to dream of new horizons and work toward new goals. Patchouli is a vital ingredient in any essential oil blend that targets our perspective on money, material possessions, or lack of abundance issues of any kind.
Patchouli is especially suited to people with strong constitutions who rarely pay any attention to their health as they pursue their material goals. Almost without warning, they eventually collapse, both mentally and physically. Patchouli is a valuable aid to their recovery and helps them achieve a balance in their lives that prevents a reoccurrence of this pattern.
Herbs can be powerful allies in managing stress and anxiety while promoting self-reflection. Many herbs, like Ashwagandha and Passion Flower, have calming properties that help relax the nervous system and stabilize mood. Along with BT, they can alleviate feelings of overwhelm and fatigue, encouraging mental clarity and emotional balance. Additionally, herbs such as Elderberry Nighttime support restorative sleep, which is essential for effective self-reflection. By incorporating these natural remedies, individuals can cultivate a more grounded, mindful approach to navigating life’s challenges.
Elderberries are rich in vitamins C and A, as well as flavonoids. These antioxidant powerhouses may help prevent various types of cell damage. They also contain iron, potassium, phosphorus, copper, calcium, vitamin B6, beta-carotenes, and several proteins. Elderflowers, included in this formula, assist in cleansing the blood and cells of waste products and toxins. These flowers contain constituents that act as mild sedatives and analgesics, providing relief from pain.
Stress, even during the day, can impact our sleep. Both stress and anxiety trigger hormonal elevations that disrupt restful sleep. Each of the other herbs in this formula—lemon balm, chamomile, and passion flower—has properties that promote sleep, relaxation, and the calming and nourishing of an overstressed nervous system.
Because Ashwagandha improves neuron impulses throughout the nervous system, strengthens and rebuilds nerve cells, and relaxes tension in the neural synapses of the brain, it is considered effective for memory issues, mood stabilization, and the relief of stress and tension. Research trials in 1980 indicated that this herb increases hemoglobin levels and improves both thyroid and adrenal function, which makes sense since Ashwagandha contains iron in a highly absorbable form.
A unique feature of Ashwagandha is that research indicates it helps prevent the depletion of Vitamin C when the body is under stress. Vitamin C is essential for the formation of blood vessels, cartilage, muscle, and collagen in bones, and it is crucial for healing processes throughout the body. Ashwagandha also contains an active ingredient called withanolides, which resemble human steroid hormones.
Passion Flower is one of my favorite nervine and nerve-relaxing herbs. In some ways, it is similar to Valerian but is much milder and more pleasant to taste. When combined with St. John’s Wort, Passion Flower enhances its nervine and anti-depression effects.
One suggested use for Passion Flower is as a warm tea consumed at bedtime to improve sleep depth and quality. It is also effective for stomach upsets linked to stress or nervous tension. Additionally, mixed with Motherwort, it serves as an excellent substitute for the endangered herb Lady Slipper, which is often unavailable and, when found, is outrageously expensive due to its status on the Endangered Species list in many countries.
As I get older and continue to try to “run faster than I have strength,” I am coming to appreciate this tincture more. It’s a brilliant combination of nutrients for the brain, formulated to help both kids and adults suffering from ADHD and anxiety. This tincture contains some of the best herbs known to improve overall brain health and function. Additionally, it enhances mood, reduces feelings of overwhelm and fatigue, stimulates the immune system, and eases depression.
These homemade natural lotions are gentle enough for all skin types. They are paraben free, formaldehyde free, and they contain no petroleum products, no animal products, and no artificial fragrances or dyes.
Lavender is a gentle essential oil, suitable for various skin conditions like cuts, sunburns, burns, rashes, dermatitis, eczema, and insect bites. Its regular use on burns and injuries can reduce scarring. Lavender also works well as an after-sun lotion. However, if the skin issue is fungal, it is recommended to apply essential oils with water rather than using them in lotions or other oil-based products.
LeBaby Me Lotion is soothing and suitable for all skin types, including delicate baby skin. It’s gentle enough for use on babies of any age and can provide care for anyone at any stage of life. LeBaby Me works well as a diaper rash cream and, when diluted, is perfect for full-body massages. Like all essential oils, the essential oil version of LeBaby Me should always be diluted when used on babies and small children. Lotions are an ideal method for applying oils to their tender skin
LeSego Lily Lotion is ideal for stress, anxiety, and self-reflection. Originally created for a spa and massage business, it quickly became a favorite due to its calming aroma, designed to bring peace during crises or moments of anxiety. The scent serves as a reminder of being loved and appreciated, while also inspiring mindfulness in showing love to others. This lotion promotes skin elasticity and may slow aging by nourishing the skin and smoothing wrinkles.
LeAcknowledge nourishes and strengthens the nervous system while helping individuals accept and face the realities of their lives or health situations. This acceptance fosters healing and peace instead of despair. Recognizing and acknowledging feelings, without judgment, allows for emotional progress and moving forward. For those with independent natures, LeAcknowledge may help in allowing others to serve us, while also encouraging feelings of gratitude and appreciation for the services and blessings we receive from others.
LeLetting Go is a favorite blend for many because it helps release negative emotions, promoting tolerance and compassion toward oneself and others. As its name suggests, this oil supports the “letting go” of emotional baggage stored in the body’s physical tissues. Every organ corresponds to specific emotions, and when these emotions are out of balance, they can affect the organ’s function. Releasing unnecessary emotional burdens can positively impact organs such as the colon, kidneys, liver, and gallbladder, restoring balance and vitality.
The strength of LeReconciliation lies in its ability to help us find perspective and peace by fostering understanding and compassion. This empathy acts like a comforting blanket, allowing us to maintain connections even when physically separated. The aroma of LeReconciliation encourages peace with the past, joy in current relationships, and hope for future connections with loved ones, whether near or far. It’s particularly beneficial for processing grief and loss, especially when unresolved feelings or trauma were present in the relationship at the time of separation.
