Sun Ready Kit. For burns and sunburns.

Sun Ready Kit

This kit contains my three FAVORITE things for burns and sunburns.  Each of them are amazing by themselves but when used together the results are unbelievable.

LAVENDER is a must for any type of burn. Combine by mixing a few drops with miracle salve or neutralizer for even greater healing. Lavender is mild enough to be used neat (straight). A spray bottle is my favorite way to apply it to burns because there is no need to touch the burn. You can also use Lavender on cuts or wounds of any kind. Lavender is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, cytophylactic, and antispasmodic, making it effective for muscle strains and sprains, cramps, and wound healing. The calming effects of Lavender are an emotional balm.

NEUTRALIZER is an alkalinized liquid that contains minerals such as Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium. When added to your drinking water it may give you more energy and help balance your body’s pH levels. One of my favorite ways to use it is to spray it on sunburns. It immediately takes the stings away for a few seconds and provides the body with the things it needs to rebuild and repair. It can be sprayed on the sunburn as often as needed. I also have found relief from hives by spraying neutralizer on them.

MIRACLE SALVE contains five very amazing herbs, Comfrey, Lobelia, Mullein, Oregon Grape, and Plantain. This salve was made specifically for treating burns and has been used on everything from mild sunburns to very severe burns. I like to add Lavender when using it to treat burns of any kind. Miracle Salve is amazing for scrapes and cuts, or any situation where you would like to speed up healing and avoid scarring.

Sunshade Lotion. Prevent Sunburns.

Sun Shade Lotion

There are a lot of things about this lotion that I love.  I like how easily it absorbs into the skin and I love how healthy it makes my skin feel.  I have tried it out a few times in water but only when I am not staying in long and I have re-applied frequently.  It seems to work but I would not call it waterproof.

Sun Shade Lotion is designed to provide light sun cover without chemicals. It contains all-natural oils that inherently have an SPF factor ranging from 28-50 in red raspberry seed oil, 38-40 for carrot seed oil, 20 in wheat germ oil, and 4-15 in avocado oil, and 2-4 for cocoa butter. Mango butter and cranberry seed oil help to protect against UV rays. These oils have been mixed with water and emulsifiers to make a lotion, so they are only part of the final product. With any product used for sun protection, it is a good idea to reapply every 60 to 90 minutes. For extra protection, you can apply more than one layer.

Interesting Fact:
SPF 20 sunscreen blocks about 94% of the UVB rays of the sun. SPF 40 sunscreen does NOT block twice as much. It blocks around 98% of the UVB rays.

Summer Blessed Waters. Favorites for burns and bites.

Summer Blessed Waters

There are so many blessed waters that fit the topic of discussion for July. These are what I call my summer blessed waters.  I can’t imagine doing summer without them. For this reason, I have broken them up into a few categories.  Some of them fall into more than one category.  There is an incredible amount of information available and in order to keep this blog from becoming a book, I am simply going to make the name links to further information.
Burns and Scalds
Cuts and Wounds
Heat Exhaustion – Heat Stroke
Hives
Insect Bites and Stings

Burns and Scalds

CALENDULA OFFICINALIS: Used mostly as a topical in a gel form. Very good that way.
CANTHARIS VESICATORIA: One of the best remedies for burns; helps the burn heal and lessens the amount of pain felt.
HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA: Not a common remedy for burns, but very useful if the burns are deep or have become inflamed (pre-infectious).
URTICA URENS: Useful for the minor burns and scalds of every day. Really relieves the stinging and burning sensation.

Cuts and Wounds

CALENDULA OFFICINALIS: Externally, for minor cuts and wounds, along with a remedy that most closely matches the symptoms.
HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA: Use for open, painful wounds with weakness from blood loss. Also relieves pain following surgery.
LEDUM PALUSTRE: Puncture wounds, such as to the sole of the foot or palm of the hands. Hypericum is better for extremities, such as fingers and toes. Ledum prevents infection.
STAPHYSAGRIA: Specific mental picture of humiliation or anger with a puncture or stab wound.

Heat Exhaustion – Heat Stroke

Heat exhaustion: Loss of fluids and electrolytes can also produce a condition where there is nausea, dizziness, weakness, cramps, headache, and fainting. In the instance of heat exhaustion, the person will be dehydrated. Replacing bodily fluids and having the person lie down in a cool room helps with recovery.

Heat stroke: When the body is unable to control its temperature after lengthy exposure to heat and the sun, sometimes a fatal condition known as heat stroke occurs. An early sign is the lack of sweating. The body temperature may rise to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and there will also be dehydration and a loss of electrolytes. Seizures, severe headaches, confusion, and rapid breathing are also evident. This is an emergency situation and generally calls for immediate medical attention.

ACONITUM NAPELLUS: Faint and dizzy with a headache after prolonged, direct exposure to the sun.  The individual will be anxious and restless. May tell you he is dying.
BELLADONNA: Agonizing sudden shooting headache with intense throbbing. Bright red face. Dilated pupils. Glassy-eyed, fixed stare with no expression. Mouth dry but no sensation of thirst.
BRYONIA ALBA: Severe headache made worse by the slightest motion. Extremely thirsty for large amounts of cold water.
CARBO VEGETABILIS: Collapse from excess heat. Skin feels clammy. Nausea. Better for moving air around him (fanning).
GELSEMIUM SEMPERVIRENS: Sun stroke. Headache in the back of the head. Weakness. Possibly comatose. No thirst.
GLONOINUM: First remedy for sunstroke. Severe congestive headache after exposure to sun and heat. Hot face with cold extremities. Irritability. Confusion. Pounding pain. (Compare to Belladonna)
LACHESIS MUTA: Headaches from heat and sun exposure. Faintness. Dizzyness. Mental confusion.  Symptoms are worse after sleep. Faintness. Dizzyness.
NATRUM CARBONICUM: Chronically affected by heat and sunstroke. Extreme fatigue that is the result of heat and exposure to the sun. Headache is worse from the slightest mental effort

Hives

APIS MELLIFICA: Much burning and stinging. Rosy red. Very sensitive and sore. Often with fever and sweating. Worse at night.
URTICA URENS: Red, raised blotches with constant desire to rub. Rubbing sometimes brings some relief. Always consider when the hives may have been a reaction to eating shellfish.

Insect Bites and Stings

APIS MELLIFICA: Burning and stinging. The person is tearful and whiny.
ECHINACEA ANGUSTIFOLIA PUPUREA: Blood purifier, so speeds recovery and return to normal.
HYPERICUM PERFORATUM: For exceptionally inflamed and painful bites to nerve-rich areas with the pains shooting or tearing up neural pathways.
LEDUM PALUSTRE: Ledum prevents sepsis and infection and should routinely be given when a person is bitten or stung. It may be given, in low potency, along with the remedy that is most clearly indicated.
STAPHYSAGRIA: Indicated when the bite or sting stays sensitive to the touch for a longer than the usual period of time.
URTICA URENS: Give internally. Apply locally for the burning and itching

Lavender is my favorite oil for burns and sunburns.

Lavender Spray

I love having this oil in a spray bottle so that I don’t have to touch cuts and burns, causing more pain, in order to deliver the amazing benefits of this oil when needed. Lavender can be used for nearly all skin conditions.  It can be applied to cuts, sunburns, burns, rashes, dermatitis, eczema, and insect bites.
Lavender is a universal oil that has been shown to balance the body and to work wherever there is a need. It is called “the grandmother” of essential oils because it cares for and nurtures us through such a variety of physical and emotional stresses.
If you don’t know what essential oil to reach for, try lavender. Emotionally, Lavender can help us move from judgment to kindness and generosity.  One of the great emotional gifts of Lavender is the feeling of total and unchanging support around and within us. It leaves us with no room for doubt that we are loved and will be supported in life’s challenges and in the process of healing. Lavender promotes faith, even in the hard times. Lavender brings balance between masculine and feminine energy and traits.

Neutralizer. You will love it for sunburns.

Miracle II Neutralizer

This is a strange little product that I have been using for a number of years.  I love this product and use it for sunburns (with Lavender). It is the first thing I think of when the skin is involved.  Situations like hives, chickenpox, eczema, burns, and even when my kids get into stinging nettle.

It is also a useful product for tummy troubles.  It is helpful for keeping the body hydrated and providing extra minerals in times of sickness.

NEUTRALIZER is an alkalinize liquid that helps to neutralize stored acid wastes. Add to your drinking water to help balance your body’s pH!  It may give you more energy and may help balance your body’s pH levels for people with acid pH. May also help cleanse impurities from your stomach and may help with stomach acid. It is a mild sudsless soapy liquid that acts as an internal detergent! May help improve your well-being and the overall general appearance on the outside and inside.

Ingredients: Energized Stabilized Oxygenated Water, Ash of Dedecyl Solution, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium.

The three blends and three singles were chosen for July because they are my favorite for use in the great outdoors.

BeGone Essential Oil

LeBeGone  is an amazing bug spray and should be sprayed on pant legs, sleeves, and hats, being careful to avoid contact with the eyes. Each of the single oils in this blend is among the best at repelling insects and was designed to help prevent insect and tick bites. LeBeGone has an amazing aroma and is one of my favorite oils to wear, even when not out in the wild.

LeBeGone contains many oils used for depression, anger, and judgemental attitudes and creates a feeling of being loved and supported. A great oil to diffuse in negative situations.  I love that we can accomplish so many wonderful things while keeping bugs away. This is a great oil for gentle lymphatic drainage. The oils in this blend support the movement of lymphatic waste products through the kidneys.

MelaPlus Essential Oil

LeMelaPlus can be applied topically to insect bites and stings.  It helps with the itching and will also help prevent infection.   Adding LeMelaPlus to Miracle Salve, makes a great antibacterial ointment for cuts and abrasions.   LeMelaPlus is also used for disinfecting cuts, scrapes, and wounds.  You can add it to the water you are washing cuts and scrapes with it will act as a disinfectant.

This oil is strongly antiseptic. It prevents the growth of bacteria, fungus, and other infectious agents. LeMelaPlus can be used for athlete’s foot and toenail fungal infections. It is also used for disinfecting cuts, scrapes, and wounds. LeMelaPlus can also be diluted and massaged over the liver.

I love to diffuse it to dispel odors.

Woodland Path Essential Oil

LeWoodland Path is a blend that has herbal tones that remind you of walking in the woods which is very grounding to all systems of the body. This is a good oil to bring you back to happy summer days spent among nature’s greenery.

This Blend is designed to allow us to take a journey down a woodland path, to get a touch of nature, and to reconnect with our wonderful Mother Earth. This blend should be used to relieve stress, center yourself, and begin anew as each spring the woods do.

LeWoodland Path is blended with oils that help the lymphatic system function better which benefits the whole body.  This blend is very nice diffused, applied to the back of the neck, wrists, or on your feet.  It can also be used in the bath.

Citronella Essential Oil

Citronella can be used safely as an antiseptic to sanitize and deodorize surfaces being used in food preparation. Diluted with a carrier oil, makes a refreshing massage therapy oil. Citronella oil is used for colds, flu, fatigue, headaches, migraines, and neuralgia. It is also good for balancing excessive perspiration and excessive oiliness of skin and hair.

Citronella’s bright, fresh aroma is nourishing to the spirit. It is also stimulating to the cardiovascular system. It increases the heart rate when it is abnormally low. The aroma of Citronella is recognized around the world as an insect repellent.

Citronella clears the soul of the negative influences others may be having on us. It helps us look at our relationships, being able to evaluate whether they are a positive or a negative influence in our lives.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium regenerates tissues and nerves. It is excellent for skin disorders and skin care and is especially nice for the skin of expectant mothers. It discharges toxins from the liver and dilates the biliary ducts, aiding liver, gallbladder, and kidney function. This oil can bring relief from gastric ulcers, diarrhea, jaundice, and kidney stones. Geranium is one of the best oils for circulation problems such as hemorrhoids and is helpful in slowing down bleeding.

Geranium is a very potent and aromatic oil. It is a good oil for people whose negative patterns need to be swept away in spite of their desire to hang on to them. Geranium helps one to release negative memories. It is a good oil for nervous fatigue where the body is exhausted but the mind just won’t let the body sit and rest. Geranium is a potent oil for those whose moods are up one minute and down the next. This is a good choice for people whose drive and ambition interfere with sensitivity and spontaneous joy.

TeaTree Essential Oil

Tea Tree essential oil is effective against some of the nastiest microbes on the planet. Tea Tree can prevent sepsis in wounds and it (or something else effective) should be used to treat wounds, boils, sores, cuts, insect bites, and stings. The only way to kill a virus is to weaken or rupture its protective shell—called a cyst. Tea Tree oil has been shown effective in this capacity, which greatly shortens the duration of viral infections.

Tea Tree is also a mild tissue regenerator, making it a sensible choice for rashes, nail or skin fungal infections, wounds, cold sores, acne, athlete’s foot, ringworm, head lice, vaginal thrush (dilute very well here), and candida.

Tea Tree has been in use as an antiseptic for centuries. It was used by soldiers and sailors in World War II in the treatment of tropical infections.

July Oils

Zest for Life Essential Oil

LeZest For Life Essential Oil

LeZest For Life contains essential oils known for warming the body, clearing our minds and giving us a fresh “zest for life.” This blend is great for motion sickness, upset stomachs, boosting the immune system, and toning the entire body. It is useful for body aches, colds and flu, and brings warmth and circulation to areas to which it is applied. LeZest For Life is great for respiratory ailments, improves lymphatic drainage, and helps to alleviate muscle aches and pains.

LeZest For Life brings warmth and circulation and burns away illusions and misperceptions leaving clarity, purpose, and a new “zest for life” emotionally. It will boost our vitality, mentally and physically. LeZest For Life will aid us when we are emotionally struggling, relieve depression, help with nervous exhaustion, and renew our minds and souls.

Apply diluted on the feet, down the spine, on the stomach to help digestive complaints, or behind the ears and on the wrists for a delightfully spicy perfume. Diffuse for a powerful boost to the immune system, add to the tub for relaxing muscles and toning the entire body.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Because it is mucolytic (dissolves mucous), Cedarwood is useful for chest infections, asthma, and coughs. It is also soothing and healing to the skin, and especially, to the scalp. Cedarwood is often used for dandruff, hair loss, and psoriasis.

Cedarwood encourages lymphatic drainage and stimulates the breakdown of fat in the tissues. Mildly diuretic, Cedarwood is used for cellulite and water retention. Decongestant, astringent, and anti-infective, Cedarwood is useful for respiratory and urinary tract infections. Cedarwood is of benefit in any physical complaint where the underlying condition is coldness and dampness, physically or energetically. Valued as an insect repellent to be used around spices and other food items.

Cedarwood was used traditionally by the Indian tribes of America to enhance spiritual communication. Like all conifer oils, Cedarwood enhances feelings of security and protection. It helps us to feel, and return, the love of heaven. The aroma of Cedarwood calms anger and relieves nervous tension. It quiets the mind that is going over and over the same details, analyzing and then analyzing again. Steadiness, integrity, and emotional stability are some of the great gifts of Cedarwood oil.

Cedarwood strengthens the energy of the kidney meridian. Strength in this meridian gives us the will to stand firm when we have made a decision, even against persistent opposition. Cedarwood can give us strength in times of crisis as we stand strong, refusing to lose confidence or faith. This is an excellent oil to bolster us when we are going into strange or unfamiliar situations. Cedarwood oil has been shown effective in the treatment of ADHD because it stabilizes beta/theta waves.

Miracle Salve. The best ever burn salve.

Miracle Salve

Miracle salve contains 5 very amazing herbs, Comfrey, Lobelia, Mullein, Oregon Grape, and Plantain. This salve was made specifically for treating burns and has been used on everything from mild sunburns to very severe burns. I like to add Lavender when using it to treat burns of any kind. This salve was renamed Miracle salve because of the many miracles we have seen using it. Additional oils you may consider using with it are Yarrow, Helichrysum Tea Tree, and or Geranium. If I were to only have 1 herbal salve in my home it would be this one.

This salve is incredibly healing—even for very severe burns. This salve was originally made for one of my sons. He had 3rd-degree burns from ankle to hip. No antibiotics or non-herbal anti-infectious agents of any kind were used. We soaked his leg in cold water with lots of Lavender oil for the first 24 hours and gave him Garlic capsules, IF, and RC tinctures by mouth to prevent infection.

This same salve was later used on my husband’s very severe burns. It was estimated that 65% of his upper body had 3rd-degree burns; another 10% had 2nd-degree burns. These burns included his face, ears, and hands. The burns were so severe that it was several months of hard work before he could raise his chin to look you in the eye. The muscles of the shoulders, arms, hands, back, and abdomen were also severely damaged. (We got to watch muscle tissue regrow and striate properly; not a pretty sight, but fascinating to someone like me!)

This salve was renamed Miracle Salve at this time because we know that it really does work miracles. We saw, and have continued to see, miracles with its use.

Once again, as with our son, no antibiotics or non-herbal anti-infectious agents were used. My husband did not see a doctor or go to a medical facility throughout this experience. The external burns were not the scary part. He had gasped—as anyone naturally would—as the explosion occurred, inhaling flame and noxious gases. But that is another story for another day.  It can be read in my memoir Educating if you are interested.

Val and Laree WestoverMost of my husband’s skin has healed beautifully, returning very nearly to a pre-burn state. His skin is more sensitive to sunlight and chemicals than it was. We hope this will pass with time. His right hand, used to remove his burning clothing, suffered some major muscle and tendon damage. This hand is still a bit unsightly, but it is usable and strong (much stronger than my own hands). He has no fingerprints on either hand, making his fingers a bit slippery, and he has lost some dexterity in his fingers but, considering the extent and depth of his burns, he is very much a miracle!

The shape of his nose, ears, and lips were permanently changed a little bit, but you would have had to know him well before the burns to notice. There are two very small scars on his face and a couple of other small ones on his body. He looks wonderful!

This is just of the many miracles of my life that I give many more details to in my book Educating.
