 REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM COMPLETE

This Reproductive System article will be broken up into smaller articles.

Essential oils are discussed in the book, Butterfly Miracles with Essential Oils, while the herbals are discussed in Butterfly Miracles with Herbal Remedies. Blessed Waters are energetic remedies that work similarly to homeopathic remedies.  The Blessed Water remedies shown in this presentation are listed using the same common names and standard abbreviations of the homeopathics they are similar to. Similar herbal and homeopathic remedies may be purchased elsewhere and there are many essential oils on the market.  The Butterfly formulas are my “babies.”  I created most of them and they are what I know—and teach—best.

Suggestions for pregnancy, childbirth, nursing and infant care is treated in more depth in the Butterfly Miracles series of books.   The book, Butterfly Miracles with Essential Oils, has an entire section devoted to essential oils and women’s health.  In addition, the book Homeopathic Remedies II, Section Two is devoted entirely to women’s health.

PUBERTY

Healthy pregnancies, also begin with the habits that are formed in adolescence.

Puberty is a time of emerging hormones.  It can also be a time of raging and unbalanced hormones.  In some ways this stage of life can be a sort of return to the “terrible twos.”  There will be a great deal more autonomy thrown in just to keep things interesting, however. Behavior may include mood swings, and a child at this stage may go from calm and cooperative to angry and annoyed in seconds.  Sometimes they will be rebellious and sassy, and other times weepy and over-sensitive.

During this time of changing hormones it is very important to pay close attention to diet.  There are several very good reasons to do so. Habits formed here will become a lifestyle. Hormonal patterns established will impact the ease, or the difficulty, experienced during the childbearing years.

Gallbladder/Liver/Zits and Fat

A young woman needs to understand the importance of today on the tomorrows of her childbearing years. It might be helpful to explain the connection between a healthy gallbladder and liver and the zits on her face.  Fried food, junk food, and a general lack of nutrients play a large role in keeping skin clear.  This is because of the effect they have on the gallbladder and liver. Most young women, once they understand this, are only to happy to clean up their diets.  A weak or sluggish gallbladder also causes fats to build up in the bloodstream and tissues.  After all, no young woman wants excess fat hanging around!

Remedies for this Stage:

HERBS: This is a good time to start on the YW tinctureYW should be a part of life any time a few symptoms of hormone imbalances begin to appear.  In addition, KNA or  MIN tinctures should usually be taken.  These will help to cover nutritional needs for vitamins and minerals that may otherwise be missing.

THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE

Hormones

Many things, in nature and in our health, operate in cycles. It is perfectly natural to feel the waxing and waning of energy and emotions throughout the lunar month. It is NOT natural to feel the symptoms of PMS. Instead of cussing our hormones, we should learn all we can about them.  We should know what is necessary to keep them balanced.  Hormone imbalances affect emotions as well as physical health.  Out of balance hormones bring about many problems such as irregular, painful or heavy periods, and PMS. Eventually, fertility and menopausal problems will likely follow. On the other hand, balanced hormones produce in us boundless energy.  Balanced hormones allow us to enjoy feelings of compassion for others and personal well-being.

The B vitamins and vitamin C are particularly important to hormone balance as are trace minerals and essential fatty acids.

Possible Causes of PMS

In the Western world, PMS symptoms are thought to be caused by an imbalance in hormones.  In Eastern healing philosophies, lymphatic congestion is considered to be the primary cause.  We will list possible remedies for hormone imbalances first, followed by some remedies for lymphatic health.

Hormone Imbalances are Often Caused By or Related To:

  • Hereditary factors (while problems seem to run in families, this is only one part of the problem).
  • Stress and emotional issues more frequently than not play a part.
  • Too much of the wrong kind of salt, too much sugar and refined carbohydrates.
  • Constipation, digestive issues, without a doubt, impact hormones.
  • Low thyroid function or a sluggish liver.
  • Nutritional habits.
  • Consumption of alcohol or caffeine.
  • Deficiencies of essential fatty acids, B vitamins, vitamin C, and trace minerals such as magnesium, zinc, chromium, and calcium.

This information is found here and in infertility remedies, below.

HERBS: LT—formerly known as Lymph Tonic, Super C, Yarrow/Usnea (both infection fighting and lymphatic drainage), Echinacea, Elderberries, Thyme, Rosemary, Garlic, Elecampane, Ginger, Nettles, Oregon Grape, Parsley, Plantain, Poke Root especially good for lymphatic drainage), Red Clover, and Cramp Bark.

BLESSED WATER: Calc, Articum lappa. (burdock, no set abbreviation), Merc-s, and Sulph.

Other Suggestions for Lymphatic Health

Exercise is essential because the lymph system has no pump. It is only the motion of the muscles that moves lymph fluid along in the body. Deep breathing stimulates the flow of lymph fluid. Room temperature, or even hot water, sipped frequently throughout the day will re-hydrate the body and get lymph moving. Make use of clay baths and foot soaks. Gentle full-body massage is believed to push up to 75% of stagnant lymph back into circulation. Structural alignment, instead of mis-alignment, can prevent blockages of lymph flow from developing. Dry brushing of the skin is also helpful. Alternate hot and cold showers are also recommended. (Brrr – not for me and contra-indicated for pregnancy and heart conditions.)

FERTILITY ISSUES

Infertility is one of the most difficult of life’s hard situations. It can be a heart-rending journey for a young couple. Waiting for a pregnancy to happen can be an emotional monthly roller coaster ride. “Maybe this month” is hard on everyone involved, including the midwife or fertility counselor. Alternate remedies meet with success quite often. The words, “Guess what? We’re pregnant!” were some of the most beautiful words I have ever heard.

There are so many possible causes and contributing factors to infertility. In addition, it is a rare occasion when only one factor is the entire problem. Every couple and every situation is so unique that advice such as is offered here can only be general advice. I think of it as a sort of shotgun approach. Try every single thing that you can think of, consistently and for as long as it takes. Experience taught me that, more often than not, we would be successful if we were patient and persistent. In fact, success rates when following the advice and using the remedies listed below, as needed, was very high in my own practice and among others that I associated with.

Possible Factors—

Things that may contribute to fertility issues.

For Women: Being a little bit older—statistically, women over 30 experience more fertility issues. They also tend to have poorer diets and more stress in their lives.  Being overweight or experiencing thyroid disorders or having other glandular issues is also common.  Heavy alcohol consumption, sexually transmitted diseases, environmental toxins, including pesticides and lead (both male and female) can also be creating problems.   There may be emotional issues around pregnancy or parenthood.  There may be  hormone driven issues such as irregular or abnormal ovulation or polycystic ovarian disease.  PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in the United States at this time.  Hypothalamic dysfunction, damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis, and irregular menstrual cycle without a known cause are also common with infertile women.

For Men:  A couple’s inability to conceive will be an issue with the husband approximately 40% of the time. The husband is, too often, looked at only after all avenues for the woman have been explored.

Possible causes of infertility with the man may include, first and foremost, too few sperm being produced. Men produce sperm throughout their lives, making current health issues and lifestyle habits a likely contributing factor. Another issue may be lack of motility of the sperm. The sperm simply move too slowly to reach their destination while still viable. The sperm may be oddly shaped and lack the ability to penetrate the egg. There seems to be a dearth of research published about the cause of these causes with having viable sperm.  There may also be hormonal issues with the man. These issues may be indicated by such thing as changes in hair growth, sexual function, or emotional stability.

Step One: Foot Zones

Regular foot zones for both the husband and the wife are very important. A zone treatment can remove physical blocks wherever they might exist.  A zone can  give an overview of the problem from a perspective that is different than the medical perspective. Chiropractic adjustments and Cranio Sacral treatments have also proven helpful.

Step  Two: Hormones

Balance hormones until they are running perfectly—again, in both the husband and the wife.  Suggestions for hormone balancing essential oils and herbal remedies are listed below.

Step Three:  Nutrition

Investigate what herbs and foods contain which vitamins and minerals. Make sure you are getting everything that you need. One of the most important nutrients to focus on is Vitamin E. If you choose to supplement Vitamin E rather than obtain it from food sources, be sure that the label says d-alpha and not dl-alpha. The “l” indicates that you have a man-made substitute for the real thing. The man-made substitute will not be effective at all.  In addition, it will likely clog receptor sites making the uptake are real Vitamin E almost impossible.

Other nutrients to be sure to include in your diet are Omega 3s, Vitamin C, and folate.  The folate should be from real food sources and not from folic acid supplements).

Step Four:  The Lymphatic System

Support the lymphatic system every way that you can. Chinese medical philosophy and my own experience tell me that a healthy lymph system is critically important.  The lymph system must carry off waste products if there is to be good health and optimum  fertility.

Step Five:  Caffeine and Soda

Avoid them like the plague that they are. Caffeine has a definite unbalancing effect on hormones for both men and women.

Step Six:  Smoking

Absolutely quit smoking!

Step Seven:  Exercise

Get some exercise.  Not to excess, but a little every day.

Step Eight:  Stress

Decrease, or learn to manage the stress in your life. Essential oils can be helpful with stress management and with emotional stability, especially as you are waiting for success. Essential oils may be helpful with fertility issues on many fronts.

Step Nine:  Sleep

Get more sleep. Sufficient rest is often a critical factor in hormone balance and general health.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY PREGNANCY

There are many things that go into the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy, therefore, a few of them are listed below.

Diet
sufficient fluids
exercise
sunlight
periods of rest during the day

HERBS: PHB—the acronym stands for ‘pregnancy hormone balancer’— that is to say, it is a great formula for pregnancy. PT—’pregnancy tea’—also balances the hormones of pregnancy. Raspberry Tea is a must, especially during the last trimester of pregnancy. I always insist that a mother is supplementing Vitamin E. In addition, I try to ensure that she is eating plenty of greens for their folic acid and vitamin K content.

ESSENTIAL OILS: Any essential oil which helps to maintain emotional balance and physical stamina will be of benefit during pregnancy. The Butterfly essential oil combination LeWoman Wise and LeBalance, above all, certainly should be avoided and most importantly any single oils with pregnancy listed as a contraindication should be avoided or used with great caution. Homeopathic remedies are both gentle and effective during pregnancy.

The Immune System and Pregnancy

During pregnancy, several changes occur in the function of the immune system.  Firstly, the enhancement of some normal immune functions occurs.  Suppression of other important immune functions happens, to some extent, at the same time.  That is to say, these changes protect the fetus from infectious diseases.  These changes also prevent the fetus from being rejected as something that is foreign to the mother’s body.  In conclusion, well-balanced lymphatic and immune systems accomplish all this without drastically compromising the defenses that keep the mother healthy.  Statistically, however, the reality is that the incidence of viral illness, the intensity of the viral attack, the severity of the illness, and even the rate of death (still low—very low overall) are all higher in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women.

In light of these statistics and recent research findings, the importance of healthy and properly functioning lymphatic and immune systems cannot be over-emphasized.  The time to prepare for pregnancy, nutritionally and lymphatically, is during adolescence (or maybe even before that). In addition, a pregnant woman should always respond immediately to any sign of illness with appropriate herbs, essential oils, and homeopathic remedies.

MISCARRIAGE AND THE PREVENTION OF MISCARRIAGE

Miscarriage is far more common than is generally supposed. It is an estimation by some in the medical community that 1 in 2 very early pregnancies miscarry.  These miscarriages often appear to have been only a delayed or extra heavy period. Statistics say that 1 in 6 women who have had a positive pregnancy test will suffer a miscarriage later on. These statistics seem a little high, based on my experience as a midwife. It is my belief that with proper care and natural remedies, half of “threatened miscarriages” can be brought to term. A 1 in 6 miscarriage rate seems high because we see, so often, women threats to successful completion.

Some women have spotting or even light periods regularly throughout their pregnancies. This does not necessarily indicate an impending miscarriage.  It is, however, always cause for concern and prompt action. Whenever there is bleeding during pregnancy, corrective measures should be taken immediately.  If cramping or softening of the cervix is present, the woman should spend as much time lying down as possible. After two days of bed rest, the woman should remain still if moving about increases bleeding until bleeding stops.

Miscarriage

ESSENTIAL OILS: The essential oil LeMillenia tightens the uterus and cervix.  It also realigns everything structurally and energetically.  LeHeartSong and LeWhispering Hope can help with the emotional loss should pregnancy not carry to term.

HERBS: If the pregnancy is in the first 6 weeks when bleeding occurs, False Unicorn and Lobelia should be taken. The ratio should be 3 parts False Unicorn to 1 part Lobelia. Butterfly Express sells this under the acronym MC (Miscarriage Formula).  This combination taken as soon as spotting begins has saved many pregnancies. Once the egg has left the corupus luteum inside the fallopian tube, certain hormones should be produced.  These hormones signal the endometrial lining to prepare for implantation of the zygote (soon to be baby).  Without this signal, the fertilized egg cannot implant.  Since no implantation has taken place, the uterus empties and a miscarriage occurs.  These types of miscarriages usually occur between the 6th and 8th week.  False Unicorn with Lobelia encourages production of these hormones and the baby is able to implant.

Other herbs to consider include Chaste Tree, Cramp Bark, Black Haw, Wild Yam, and Raspberry.

BLESSED WATER: Bach flower remedies Rock Rose or Mimulus may help with the emotional pain.  Rescue Remedy should be used for shock, bleeding, and the emotional state of the mother.
Other homeopathic remedies to consider: Acon, Arn, Ars, Bry, Caul, Chin, Cimic, Ferr-p, Gels, Ign, Ip, Puls, Rhus-t, Ruta, Sabin, Sec, Sep, and Vib.

The blessed waters used for the various stages of miscarriage are treated in more depth in the book Butterfly Miracles with Homeopathic Remedies, II, Chapter Four.

Cayenne, Shepherd’s Purse and Mistletoe (for a few days)—to control bleeding. Chlorophyll is also helpful here. The herbal formula, KNA should be utilized to rebuild energy and health.

ESSENTIAL OILS: LeMillenia causes the uterus to fold and return rapidly to a pre-pregnant state. It has proven very helpful in coping with excess bleeding. LeMillenia also helps the woman focus forward and cope with the myriad of emotions that miscarriages create. LeHeartSong and LeWhispering Hope, as mentioned above, should be remembered.

LABOR AND DELIVERY

In order to cover labor and delivery properly, we would need to write an entire book or two. The following is merely a list of the most commonly used remedies during labor and delivery.  There is a little bit of information provided to guide your choice—or perhaps to your further education.

General Suggestions

FSW

FSW (Five/Six Week Formula) aids in preparing mother and baby for the upcoming birth. In addition, this formula really does make a significant difference to the length and intensity of labor.

My experience with this formula consequently, is that it often focuses the contractions in a downward and more productive direction. This focus makes the labor more intense but actually less painful overall. With properly focused contractions (unlike the all-around-the-belly contractions produced by pitocin) the baby is more likely to line up properly.  Proper alignment allows the head to mold as it should, as a result, a properly molded head reduces the circumference needed through the cervix and across the perineum.  For instance, this can be a difference of a centimeter or more.  A centimeter may not sound like much, it can, however,  make a great deal of difference to the length of the pushing stage.  It also makes it much easier to deliver the baby without any damage to the perineum or cervix.

Ginger Baths

Ginger baths relax tired, overworked or sore muscles. A ginger bath will relax away Braxton-Hicks contractions during the last weeks of a pregnancy. As a result, it increases oxygen to the uterus. A ginger bath will increase labor at term if everything is ready to go. If the labor has slowed down due to maternal fatigue or tension, a ginger bath may be just the thing needed.  The ginger will firstly, relax the mother.  Secondly, it will stimulate the start-up of labor again.  It can sometimes be hard to tell whether the contractions being felt are the real thing or just more Braxton-Hicks contractions.  Putting the mother into a ginger tub will clarify the situation. In short, if Braxton-Hicks, they will be relaxed away, if real, labor will pick up immediately.  A Ginger bath can be taken with either Ginger Tincture or Ginger Powder.

Aconitum napellus

Aconitum napellus is the number one homeopathic remedy for trauma, emergency, and first-aid, especially during birth. It is especially effective when labor has begun early but the baby is not yet ready to be born.  For Acon to be effective, the labor will be proceeding very quickly and quite violently. For instance, often the labor was triggered by fright or emotional trauma of some kind.

A hormone produced in the parathyroid glands plays a key role in regulating the calcium and potassium levels in the body. The reasons for low parathyroid function, if there is no abnormal growth or tumor present, are not well understood.

There are many reasons why calcium may be pulled from the bones to raise calcium levels in the blood.  If there are insufficient calcium-rich foods being ingested, as a result, the parathyroids secrete a hormone which releases calcium from the bones.  In addition, if the uptake of calcium is impaired and calcium levels fall too low, then the bones also take a hit.  As a result of too much calcium being pulled from the bones, you get osteoporosis.  Osteoporosis leads to the hip fractures that are common among the elderly, though this condition can exist at any time in a person’s life, not just with advancing age.
