December 2022 Stress and Food Poisoning

In December, we will be talking about STRESS and FOOD POISONING.  This is my absolute favorite time of year.  I am not a fan of the cold and the snow, but I have a special love and adoration for the spirit of Christmas time.  It is also a stressful time of year as there is so many extra undertakings to be fulfilled.  I can’t even imagine navigating it without my oil friends.  Food poisoning is another thing we seem to see a rise of this time of year, maybe because we are eating so many things that our bodies are not used to.  We will talk about our must-haves for this as well.

Ginseng

Ginseng Tinctures

The most noted effects of Ginseng are the slowing of the onset of both mental and physical fatigue when the mind or body is under great stress.  Other uses for Ginseng are the treatment of diabetes, as a reproductive system tonic and healer, for its immunostimulant properties, the strengthening of liver function, protecting and strengthening the cardiovascular system, the protection of cells during radiation, and the rebuilding of damaged cells when the radiation treatment is finished.

In Chinese medical literature and lore, Ginseng is said to restore yang qualities and is often used in male tonics and medicines, and to restore female functions that are the result of too much yin.  Translated (roughly) to western thought, this means to balance the male and female hormones. Ginseng is very effective in women whose estrogen levels are too high, putting them at risk for certain cancers, and more likely to suffer ill effects at menopause.  Emotionally, following eastern medical philosophy, Ginseng balances the passive/aggressive, nurturing/providing (Fire and Water) aspects of our personalities.

Which Ginseng should I choose?

Panax ginseng, also known as Korean or Chinese Ginseng, is the most widely used and extensively studied. Panax ginseng is considered to be the strongest medicinally. Four closely related species are also used medicinally. These are Panax quinquefolium (American Ginseng), Panax japonicum (Japanese Ginseng), Panax pseudo Ginseng (Himalayan Ginseng), and Panax trifolium (Warf Ginseng or Ground Nut). Of these, quinquefolius (or American Ginseng) seems to be the closest in chemical composition to the more expensive and more difficult-to-obtain Panax ginseng (Korean or Chinese Ginseng). Another variety, Siberian Ginseng, (which is not a true Ginseng at all) is discussed on the Expressions page as well as in the Herbal Remedies book.

Ginseng is processed in two forms: white and red. White is the dried root with the outer skin peeled off and is mostly made from the quinquefolius type of Panax ginseng. Red is the whole root that has been steamed. Obviously, steaming or removing the outer layer alters the final chemical composition of the end product. I do not know why the outer layer is removed or why the Ginseng is steamed. It would seem to me that leaving it alone would be best; I trust there is a reason.

Blessed Waters Stress and Food PoisoningStress and Food Poisoning Blessed Waters

There are five Blessed Waters that I have picked to cover these two topics.  The first three are for food poisoning and flu.  These are the most amazing things I have ever seen for food poisoning.  They are something everyone ought to have around and remember to reach for.  It is a good idea to follow up with oils but reach for these first.

ARSENICUM is a great remedy for any type of flu symptom – both stomach and respiratory varieties – and because it is listed in the protocols for a wide range of epidemic diseases, from the mild ones right on through the really wicked and nasty ones. Keynotes are burning pains, sudden great weakness, exhaustion, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting. It is effective with hay fever, liver and spleen enlargement, diarrhea, pleurisy, bronchitis and pneumonia, asthma, headaches, ulcers, and anything that burns like fire – including nettle rash, etc. Also listed as a treatment for suppurating wounds and has been used for the treatment of gangrene. Arsenicum is the very best remedy I know of for food poisoning.
GELSEMIUM SEMPERVIREN is effective for the treatment of viral and bacterial flu epidemics.  Chief complaints are achiness, tiredness, heaviness, weakness, and soreness. The feeling of weakness is manifested on all levels (physical, emotional, and mental) and is usually accompanied by dizziness, drowsiness, and trembling. Gelsemium has a dramatic action on the nervous system and is also a convalescent remedy for those who have never been well since a bout of the flu.
CARBO VEGETABLIS is used as a follow-up remedy when Arsenicum album has been used at the outset of the illness or event. Carbo is for a person who has never fully recovered from the effects of some previous illness. It helps to improve vitality following fevers and/or loss of fluids. Carbo vegetablis acts upon the venous and capillary circulation and is particularly indicated if there is blueness and coldness of the body or extremities. An odd note about the coldness of Carbo symptom pictures is that the head is generally hot, even when the rest of the body is in a total state of coldness and collapse. A keynote is the patient faints easily, is worn out, and must have fresh air.
TENSION #1 helps with stress, nervousness, anxiety, pressure headaches in the back of the neck, and post-partum depression.  There is more information about each of the individual components on the expressions page.
TENSION #2 is another one for stress.  It also helps with tension, chronic pain, neck and back pain, and is often used for the symptoms of MS. There is more information about each of the individual components on the expressions page.

Salves for Stress and Food Poisoning

InsideOut Essential Oil

LeInsideOut is primarily considered an oil that works on the physical body. Whenever you use an essential oil, you will be working on underlying emotional roots as well as physical complaints. LeInsideOut can be helpful in discovering and sorting through the emotions underlying the digestive problems. LeInsideOut can help calm the obsessive worry that sometimes contributes to digestive difficulties.

LeInsideOut improves the function of the digestive system. It helps with upset stomach, belching, bloating, stomach cramps, heartburn, constipation, and diarrhea. LeInsideOut’s ability to be effective for both constipation and diarrhea may seem odd; it is not. Natural remedies work with the body to return systems to balanced and healthy states. They are not the administration of an “opposing” remedy or force. This is true in every aspect of the body and mind when working with natural healers.  This is why I grab this oil for food poisoning.  The Blessed Waters are my first defense but I will use this for several days after to help get the system back on track.

It is useful for most types of nausea.  It can be used either by inhaling the aroma or putting a drop behind each ear. This blend should be applied over the abdomen for colon problems and for candida overgrowth. LeInsideOut has been useful in the treatment of parasites in animals and humans. For humans, place LeInsideOut on the feet and massage across the abdomen. For animals, dilute a few drops in water and massage into soft tissues.

Bountiful Essential Oil

LeSego Lily is light and airy with a beautiful, uplifting, and calming aroma.  This is my favorite oil to put in the tub and use to de-stress.  Much to my sadness, it has not worked well as a bath bomb but that is ok I just add a couple of drops of the oil to my bath and it is the best.

The aromatic influence of LeSego Lily is, in part, to bring a feeling of calmness during a crisis or when feeling anxious and out of sorts. LeSego Lily also promotes a feeling of being loved and appreciated. Its aroma often inspires us to show love and appreciation to others.

Physically, LeSego Lily is a blend for skin care and health. It promotes skin elasticity and may slow the process of aging as it nourishes the skin and smooths out wrinkles. LeSego Lily is used to bring relief from the itching of hives and allergic rashes. When used for this purpose, a more emollient carrier oil containing Jojoba, Apricot, or Rosehip Oil would be beneficial.

LeSego Lily has been made into both a lotion and a soap.  Both of them are very nice and a great way to keep the aroma with you through the day.  Since this is my favorite de-stressing oil I love them both.

Grateful Heart Essential Oil

As we experience adversity and joy in this life, our fears, frustrations, annoyances, and irritabilities should mellow into wisdom. This blend can help us do that by moving us away from the negative patterns of our lives. LeWisdom is of particular use for those who become distraught or discouraged because they continually pressure themselves to do more, be absolutely perfect, or to be ready for any future crisis situation that may happen.

This blend is often used in Inner Child work to establish a firm presence in the present time and situation.  LeWisdom can help us express and deal with repressed emotions.  LeWisdom is a wonderful oil for any grieving stages of our lives. It is one of the best blends for jet lag and fatigue.  This is a blend you should try at least once because it has a good chance of becoming a favorite.

Cinnamon Berry Essential Oil

Elemi lifts the spirits and provides the energy and desire to seek out better things and more uplifting experiences. The aroma of Elemi encourages compassion and a desire for going beyond the ordinary in serving others.

n the 20th century, due to the combination of drought and war, Frankincense essential oil became difficult to find and purchase. It also became prohibitively expensive. Elemi was often used in its place because of some similarities in practical applications. Although Elemi has a very long history, both in the middle east and in Europe, this time period helped it gain a reputation as a valuable essential oil in its own right.

Elemi has more of a citrus aroma than Frankincense does, but Elemi has the distinctive spicy/peppery tone of Frankincense. Elemi is often diffused during meditation or energy work sessions to aid in visualizations. Elemi should be diffused in times of stress or mental exhaustion.

One of my favorite ways to use Elemi is on the feet.  If I can get someone to massage it into my feet even better.  It is also a good oil for the bath.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil

Ginger is such an amazing herb that it is making it into this stress blog twice.  The tincture was mentioned earlier but the oil is also amazing and not to be forgotten.

Ginger essential oil increases physical energy and stamina. It influences how we relate to money and how we feel about our material possessions. Ginger essential oil has long been considered to be an aphrodisiac.

Ginger is for the usually dynamic individual who has lost their drive and ambition and has become apathetic and confused. Ginger warms the body and the soul, helping one tap into hidden reserves of energy. It is toning and stimulating to the digestive tract and for circulation.  So really Ginger works well both for stress and also for food poisoning.   Ginger should always be diluted very well.

Nutmeg Essential OilSaro is uplifting and energizing but creates less olfactory fatigue than other Cinnamonum family oils. This is a gentle, yet powerfully effective essential oil. Saro is an excellent aid for studying as it clears the mind and improves mental alertness, concentration, and memory.

Recent research indicates that Saro may be effective against a wide range of bacterial strains including ecoli which is responsible for urinary tract infections and meningitis, as well as several bacteria strains that are responsible for dysentery and food poisoning, and certain types of gastrointestinal toxicity.

One of the outstanding characteristics of Saro is that it is both an effective agent against minor infections and also acts to prevent reoccurrence because of its immune-building properties. Saro is an excellent choice for clearing nasal, bronchial, and sinus passages

LeUnity Essential Oil

LeUnity promotes harmony within ourselves, with others around us, and with our Creator. It helps us work with others in a relationship of cooperation, patience, and tolerance. This is the greatest essential oil product I know of for fostering a sense of physical and mental well-being. It can rid us of stubbornness, anger, judgment, and jealousy. Frequent use can promote unity among family members. You have to experience this essential oil blend to believe it.

LeUnity should be diffused in groups where incompatibility or quarrelsomeness is a problem. Use it in the home to increase peace and cooperation.

One of the great strengths of LeUnity is its ability to balance every chakra to the extent of greatly minimizing or eliminating altogether any reaction from the overuse of essential oils. This is very useful for children who get into essential oils that have been left lying around the house. Many times the balancing of all of the chakras eliminates or minimizes any allergic reaction. LeUnity makes a good deodorant.

LeBreezey opens bronchial and sinus passages very effectively and has been successful in alleviating snoring. It’s an excellent respiratory tonic and immune stimulant. LeDeeper contains penetrating, anti-inflammatory oils which aids in relieving pain that is deep in the tissues and nerves. It is useful for sciatica, arthritis, osteoarthritis, the pain of osteoporosis, sprains, and injuries where there is bruising and/or nerve damage. Dilute and apply to the skin. Excellent in the bath.

LeDeliverance can be used, diluted, or diffused, in the home as a cleaner and air purifier to fight viruses and airborne bacteria. Its many uses include respiratory infections, sore throats, strep throats, dental diseases and infections, cold sores, canker sores, cuts, general infections, athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, and infection from slivers. Apply faithfully, undiluted, for warts (this takes a little time). Frequent and consistent use of LeDeliverance strengthens the immune system and helps the lymph system to drain.

LeMillenia builds courage, confidence, and self-esteem while being calming and relaxing at the same time. Place anywhere on the body. LeMillenia is described as a “Chiropractor in a bottle”. Sweet Almond Oil is easily the most popular carrier oil for many reasons. Almond oil is inexpensive and absorbs into the skin quite quickly. It is rich in vitamins A, B, and E, all of which are beneficial nutrients for healthy skin. Almond oil contains, along with the vitamins mentioned above, heart-healthy fats, potassium, and folic acid. Furthermore, it works well as a carrier, and you can also cook with it.

Coconut Oil is odorless and colorless. It absorbs readily into the skin, leaving no residue. Doesn’t stain clothing and easily washes out of clothing and bedding. Coconut oil is an excellent skin moisturizer; rarely aggravates existing skin problems such as fungal or bacterial infections and does not clog pores. And positively, it leaves the skin feeling smooth but not greasy. Coconut oil has almost no aroma at all and has the added advantage of a long shelf life at room temperature without rancidity. Coconut oil is considered one of the best carrier oils.

Miracle Salve is incredibly healing. Herbal salves are wonderful things! They are convenient to use and very powerful. Miracle Salve is useful for burns (everything from sunburns to very serious burns), cuts/wounds (it will help it heal as well as preventing/fighting infection and minimizing scar tissue), rashes, dry or cracked skin, and just about anything else you can think of. You can use it by itself, or use it as a carrier oil to apply your essential oils.
