Endometriosis

Endometriosis

By Megan Westover

Endometriosis occurs when the same tissue found in the lining of the uterus is found outside of the uterus. It may attach itself to the outside wall of the uterus. Or to the organs and tissues in the abdominal cavity. As a woman goes through her monthly cycle, hormones influence the endometrial tissue to thicken with blood just as the tissue on the inside of the uterus does. This tissue can be sticky and will adhere to not just one wall, but sometimes stick different organs together. Such as the intestines, or bladder to the uterus. The uterine lining usually sheds, so does the endometrial tissue, but having nowhere to exit, may leave blood in the abdominal cavity. This shedding of tissue in the abdominal cavity may cause severe cramping and abdominal pain, heavy periods, and in some cases, infertility.

What is the Cause of Endometriosis?

The cause of endometriosis is still unclear in the medical world, but some believe that the high levels of estrogen in women has something to do with it. Excess estrogen can sometimes promote abnormal cell growth. Xenoestrogens in our environment are not the same as our hormone estrogen, but their molecular structure matches so closely that they have the same effect as estrogen in our body. These come from growth hormones found in cows and chickens, commercial pesticides, microwaving in plastic containers, and many other sources.
