Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

There is no specific known cause for Fibromyalgia, though there are a variety of factors that are believed to contribute to this condition. Genetics, infections, and physical or emotional trauma being the most common. It is also believed that if you have other disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, you may be more likely to develope fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common chronic pain conditions. It affects the muscles and soft tissues, causing widespread pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. Fibromyalgia effects women more than men.

It is a belief that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. With fibromyalgia, repeated nerve stimulation causes the brain to increase certain chemicals in the brain that signal pain. The brain’s pain receptors seem to develop a sort of memory of the pain and become more sensitive, overreacting to pain signals.

Fibromyalgia symptoms can start after a physical trauma, significant psychological stress, surgery or infection. Sometimes symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no specific starting event. The symptoms of fibromyalgia vary from person to person, and can be worse on some days more than others. Your level of stress or physical activity can affect Fibromyalgia symptoms.
